SGOBtheONEon thank you! I use the sm7b with a cloud lifter for clean gain, and I really like it for spoken word use although the low end response can be overpowering depending on how low a speakers voice is!

I’m struggling to choose between the e945 and the beta for my solo podcast. Why did you like the beta more for podcasts?
@matteliasmusic
@matteliasmusic 3 жыл бұрын
@@dubiousjesse hi Jesse! I have used both extensively for podcasting and I found that I just had a preference for the somewhat smoother, less icy clear tone of the beta, and also in my experience the plosives are a bit easier to control with the beta than the senn. I’ll say though that you really can’t go wrong with either, there’s nothing too scientific about my preference, it’s just essentially the one I like better in that application!

The e945 seems like a better mic for vocals due to the clarity and better reduction of handling noise. It all depends on the voice after all, but it'll suit me perfectly. Excellent comparison! Keep it up.

I think it depends on the person's voice, some people with a darker voice might do better with the Sennheiser and if they have a brighter voice the beta 58 would be better.

Hey, Matt, I agree with your review. I’ve spent many hours working behind both those mics as well as Sennheiser’s E935. Since my voice is a bit bassy, the two Sennheisers work better for me. One thing I’ve noticed, however, is that if I’m doing harmonies with either Sennheiser and the other singers are using Betas, my harmony part tends to jump forward out of the vocal blend. So, if everyone else is using Betas, I’ll do the same. I think the Beta is a better general-purpose harmony mic due to its relative lack of top-end clarity. It also seems to lack both Sennheiser mics’ quickness, definition, and “air” in the mids. I think those two qualities of the Beta, if I may call them that, allows the singer to integrate better into a vocal mix. A beneficial “veiling effect,” if you will. Second, I’ve found that the Beta is a bit more-forgiving when it comes to working distance. With the Sennheisers, I really have to be careful not to get more than, say, two inches away from the windscreens, or else my vocal level drops right out of the mix. And the transition seems to be sharp rather than gradual. This doesn’t seem to be the case with the Betas-they seem to tolerate distance a bit better and give me plenty of warning that my mouth is getting too far away. That has value for me since I’m also a bass player, and so I have things to concentrate on besides vocals. Of course, if my voice weren’t bottom-heavy, this wouldn’t be a consideration, and I could just “eat the mic” and not have to micro-manage working distance. It comes down to whatever I feel is going to work best in a particular situation, for which particular songs, and for which vocal duties I'm assigned. Anyway, great review. As always, simple is best.
@matteliasmusic
@matteliasmusic 4 жыл бұрын
Hey! As a matter of fact, I didn't think about it but you're absolutely right about the backup vocal application, I also prefer the Beta for backups for that reason. I'm glad my comparison gave you the same results you were expecting because that tells me I must have done an OK job of translating how these mics sound, which is what i was trying to do. Thanks for sharing your experience too, rock on!

I’m a power singer with strong resonance. I’m all into the 945 as it’s noted for cutting through the noise. With the Shure, I have a tendency to push harder on my vocals so the 945 is less work. For me the plosives are better deal with on the 945. This is because live on a PA, the boomier tone from the Shure is more noticeable than on small speakers. Also the falloff behind the 945 is really welcomed when there’s a loud amp or drums close by. You summed up the differences between the two tone wise imo, is spot on. One post mentioned harmonies. I hadn’t thought of that aspect, but their findings make sense. Usually on harmonies, you don’t want one voice cutting through, so the Shure would make more sense unless you need to separate yourself from another singers voice.

I’ve never been a huge fan of the Shure mics, though my buddies all love theirs. It’s never been warm enough in my personal estimation, and I cannot understand the hype. I am sure they are great, just not for my vocals. I have a Shure Super 55 that everyone loves, but it still isn’t my favorite for live performance. I have a Blue Encore 200 I’ve been using for about ten years for live performance that I love, though they are getting harder to find. I’ll probably grab a 945 soon.

@@matteliasmusic i use microphone u87 + suond card TASCAM US 2X2HR the way I usually do is record directly on adobe primiere. The downside of this approach is that I can't hear my voice while recording. After I finished recording, I listened to the new recording again, during the recording I didn't know if my voice was loud or small, after I finished recording I listened to it again and sometimes it was small and I had to re-record. 1 more time. I don't know if the REAPER you mentioned can hear your voice during recording? if you just turn on REAPER and hear your voice, just turn on REAPER and record it on adobe primiere, how great. because then I could hear my voice while recording in adobe primiere. Your audio speaking in this video sounds very clear. Very warm voice I like very much.

@@BillyNguyenOfficial so the way I’m monitoring my voice is through the interface. The focus right has a headphone out that I use for that. For your situation, I think you actually can monitor your voice while you’re speaking , there might be a setting in the software itself. I would recommend searching KZbin for how to monitor my voice in premier, and if you cant find an answer I would go to Reddit or adobe help forums and make a post asking the question, the audio/video nerds will help you

@@matteliasmusic in adobe primiere itself it allows me to hear my voice while recording. but the voice heard while recording it will be delayed making it impossible for us to speak and listen to the voice at the same time. so while recording in adobe primiere i had to mute it. I tried setting the audio delay to the lowest level. but basically it's still late. which once the audio playback is delayed it will be very difficult to dub. I also tried using 3rd software to listen to my voice such as cubase, Cakewalk, but these software are used for singing, it has echo echo. so it cannot be used. I really dream of meeting a voiceover expert. to ask them to install a 3rd software to hear my voice. then record on adobe primiere itself. (why recording on adobe primiere and not audition or many other recording software. is because on adobe primiere i can see the video playing while recording. i know what to say with that video . if recording with another software, I don't know what to say...) I hear your video the sound is very warm, clear and clean bass. makes the listeners also very interested, it's really good.

Great objective review- these are both great mics. But really, in most cases, it might be truly difficult to tell the difference in a live setting unless you have some sort of phenomenal PA set up perfectly. Most times the resolution of the PA isn't fine enough to distinguish these 2 mics apart. Additionally another factor you would want to consider when choosing, is the timbre of ones voice. It's possible one of these mics would be more complimentary to one persons voice while the other mic is more complimentary to a different person's voice. Thanks again for the review!

Great job, Matt. I have used both on the road and came to the same conclusions. I tend to use the Beta58 most, but I do love the clarity I get when using the e945. (It tends to be whether or not the PA is worth a crap and the soundman is good. If the guy mixes bright, I will just use a regular SM58.) And having dropped the e945 straight over onto it's crown, I can attest to it's durability. Barely a dent and no sonic issues. (Someone knocked my mic stand over.) I also own and use a Beta57, which picks up even less surrounding sonics, especially if I must stand in front of the drummer. You have to be right on it, though, with that tight vocal pattern.

I own both mics and a Shure wireless with Beta capsule. The 945 requires higher gain settings to achieve the same sound levels (roughly 30% more). And to me, the Shure has more proximity effect. The mic clip that comes with the 945 is not as robust as the Shure AND the brass thread insert has to be removed to fit most mic stands. This results in plastic to metal mounting for the 945 clip. Since the clip is thin to begin with, if the mic stand is knocked over there is a good chance the clip will break at the thread area. It would be good insurance to purchase a second mic clip- just in case. There is very little difference in sound quality when both are set up properly- but that is subjective. Since a mics sound is determined by many other factors, equipment, personal preference, venue, EQ, effects etc etc- a real comparison is difficult. But to me I see nothing gained by using the 945 over the Shure Beta. I use the Shure Beta wireless and the 945, well it's a nice standby mic.
@matteliasmusic
@matteliasmusic 4 жыл бұрын
Fair enough--- and i totally agree with you about the mic clip as well, the Sennheiser clips seem a lot less rugged and are actually kind of annoying because they don't fit other microphones a lot of the time, so thank you, that is something i totally forgot about

But have been noticing alot of mics i'm seeing live and liking are Sennheisers. they seem to be alot clearer and adaptable. maybe i'll make the switch.

You can do a lot with a tiny bit of EQing as well, for example by rolling off just a bit of the bass and giving a little boost in the mids / highs depending on your voice and the room, you can clear out some of the mud and cut through that mix in the room!

I was a long time Beta 58 user and thought they were great (singing in rock cover bands and solo acoustic gigs). One night I filled in with a different band who asked me if I wanted to try an E945. Bought one the next day, in my opinion it's miles ahead of the Beta. I gave the Beta to my bass player who had been using a standard SM58 forever and he couldn't believe how much better he could hear himself and how much easier it was to sing with the Beta. I bought e935 for praise team mics. They were cool but sounded a little thin to me. Then I got Beta 58a and they instantly noticed a difference. They have more body and sound more fuller than e935. The e935 may be a lil smoother but the betas cut through the mix a lil more and are a lil clearer imo

@@matteliasmusic thanks man. Just picked it up and gave it a song then, I’m in love with it. It’s cuts through so much clearer than my 58. Fry and false styles shouldn’t mess with you cleans. It may even do the opposite, through learning new techniques you will gain a better understanding of your vocal abilities. I stick by the rule if it’s hurting, stop! You are doing something wrong. It took me a long time to figure it out and I’m still learning always. But I gained a lot of range and ability through learning how to scream. Never affected my cleans in a negative way.❤️ Hope you have a happy Christmas man. All the best. I started using a 58 and at a show where I was sitting in they used the beta 58 and it felt like a world of difference so I switched and I e used a beta for maybe fifteen years now but last week a dear friend, female singer and bass player (with a lower vocal range) told me that getting a sennheiser was life changing for her performance-wise. I just got mine in the mail last night.. interested in trying it tonight. Thanks for the great video!! I’m curious as to what you think male vs female vocals for both mics and belting and pulling away from the mic so’s not to be too loud for the major belt notes. Thanks for taking the time!!
@matteliasmusic
@matteliasmusic Жыл бұрын
Hi! So I would tend to think the senn based on my experience has a little more detail in the high end, so depending on your vocal range you might enjoy that aspect of it. Both mics will be responsive to your mic technique as far as moving in and out to manipulate your sound for different types of singing. The other thing I always think about is how different every singers voice can be, and that regardless of the specs of these mics there’s probably one that feels and sounds the best to you and that’s what’s most important. Either way I’d say you can’t go wrong, those are all quality pieces of equipment and I think they’ll do well for you. Good luck with the senn, I hope it’s as big an epiphany for you as it was for your friend!

Thanks for this because I am currently looking for a supercardioid. In your opinion, which is the best for off-axis rejection because I want to record vocals whilst playing and recording acoustic guitar, and thus need as little bleed as possible? My current cardioids are useless, but the SM57 is actually okay. My budget is approx. £200 GBP / USD. I am also looking at the Shure Beta 57A, but perhaps you have better options. Thanks :)

So you could look at something like a Shure 520dx which is kind of a specialized little harp microphone, and I imagine you could attach it to a flute as well although that is outside my personal experience. If you’re looking for a “only mic you have / need” then an SM58 or beta58a will do you right, as would a Sennheiser e945, 935, or even 845 or 835. Sorry about your 58 getting swiped, that’s always really demoralizing in my experience! Good luck with your harp and flute miking mission, there are definitely some good and affordable options out there for you 🤙

I'm not really a fan of either of those mics for live singing, as I play guitar at the same time and move around a bit. They are super cardoid, a little unforgiving if you are off axis or too abrupt for me with mic technique. I prefer the standard cardoid versions of those mics, the Shure SM58 and the Sennheiser E935. It's smoother for me to manage plosives and with mic technique. And out of these 2 I prefer the Sennheiser E935. But i have a higher range voice.
