This episodes message is basically 'listen to your gut'. From when he wakes up Riker is portrayed as very uneasy, but not because he is in the future, but because there is something 'off'. Often we can't articulate this feeling often, but somehow the back of our brains knows when something underhanded is happening, and this scene is when it all comes to such a head that Riker needs to break the illusion. We must always listen for that 'uneasy' feeling we often have in life that something has to change.

The Romulan misdirect wasn't originally part of the story; they had trouble finding a rhythm for the episode as it originally had him going straight from the fake future to reality, and it just wasn't clicking. One of the writers suggested they spend an act inside a simulation within the simulation, built off the Romulan plot they'd already weaved in, and the script finally came together :)

Notice how Deanna is so dear to Will that he cannot even be rude to an almost certainly fake version of her. Maybe he considered the slight chance that she was not fake (especially considering it is so hard to tell whether she is a clumsy imitation or just her usual self 😂), or maybe just out of the pain it would cause him anyway. And/or maybe the writers were worried about the implications, fearing domestic abuse associations in the portrayal. But most likely it would just have been very bad style, uncourteous, unbecoming.

5:00 Jonathan Frakes suffers from chronic back pain, so much so that sitting in a chair the normal way is apparently a struggle. It's why he usually whips his leg over the back of a chair when mounting or dismounting the chair. He's much faster if he does that, whereas he takes a few seconds to sit down in a "normal" fashion, and he manages to hide a wince because his face is turned away from the camera. I have chronic lower back pain myself, and when my back spasms, I literally can't move from the floor or bed, but sitting in chairs has never given me problems. This has to be some epic level pain.

Years later, the thing that got me about this episode was it became possible in _Star Trek_ lore for this to have been a serious bone-up on Riker's part. Later episodes continued to develop the concept of holodeck characters gaining sentience, and then you had the stand-alone example of _Voyager's_ Doctor eventually gaining his own independence and even getting married in one future. Riker could have brought back his holodeck sweetheart as his second wife when his first died in childbirth, the kid could have been adopted at a very young age, or a bunch of other explanations that Riker Jr. wouldn't have been aware of, not part of normal conversation, or would have been better left alone during Riker's recovery.

@@rharris4736 Dude, you're the toxic employee that tells co-workers to "shutup, as in close your mouth and stop talking", not us. Surprised saying that to someone hasn't caused them to come flying across the table at you and take several swings. Those are, as the legal definition, "fighting words", at work, no less. Slow clap for your candor. You are the antithesis of "How to win friends and influence people". Bragging about your abusive behavior truly is not a good look.

I've often wondered about this scene...wondered if the director didn't play a little with Patrick Stewart, and tell Patrick that Jonathan Frakes was going to say 'one thing' when in actuality the director told Jonathan Frakes to say : "SHUT UP!"... just to get the reaction from Patrick that the director wanted...Directors have been known to do such things.

Just this morning while enduring one of those vivid stressful/embarrassing dreams, I realized what was going while I had been talking to three others about the previous embarrassing event, then for no reason in particular, to break the dream I drew a Desert Eagle from thin air, shooting at each person to no effect, then looked up/around at the room to almost taunt the dream world to end. I don’t remember what was said before waking, but I find it amusing that this scene was posted on the same day.

The only thing I never understood about startrek are those holodecks. If it's physically that big they they only can walk 20 meters max in one direction without hitting a wall but they are often times walking through jungles or huge ships that go further then 20 meters.

The floor they stand on is also simulated/holographic matter, so presumably it moves like a treadmill... as for when they split up and lose each other, I have to assume the simulated walls in-between them use optical illusions/forced perspective etc etc to make it look right to the observer inside... it's future magic, if we could explain it all perfectly we would have that technology already :)
