@@DavidFilskov you know these things cost so little and are so readily available because they don't have to do R&D and actually invest into things like manufacturing etc. There's no Retroid factory in Vietnam or something like that... they buy spare parts from other retailers/manufactorers/factories and then assemble their products manually in what probably is a medium sized warehouse.

It looks like a tiny Wii U gamepad, which is neat. I think the thick bezels make it look like a device from that era as well, which is also kinda neat.

I feel like this device definitely does justify its cost over the 2s. For the extra $100 you get the ability to smoothly emulate ps2, gc, wii, and switch (you can use an android 10 build rn), a much better and slightly larger amoled screen with an all glass bezel-less design, and improved ergonomics. I feel like that is a very compelling package for $200 and I don't think it's reasonable to expect it to be much cheaper than that.

There is switch emulation for android 10. One of the tubers, i think Rob, tested it on this device already.

I suspect maybe Retroid needs to enable display "extended" mode or a desktop mode like samsung Dex in order for us to get a nice 16:9 output. When they upgrade the android mode you SHOULD be able to force a desktop mode in developer settings, but Retroid should make their OWN custom desktop mode.

Fantastic device. I own a SD OLED which is a great handheld, but it’s too big to take along often. The Mini is a perfect complementary device to a large PC handheld. Mine is out for delivery right now, can’t wait!

Didn't want the 3.7 in screen, wanted it to be at least 4 in but I understand that there was probably no 4 inch OLED screens available that have a 4:3 resolution. Probably expensive to manufacture it yourself so I get it. I skipped on the Mini for the RP5 (GC colorway) for the much larger screen size and I mainly want to play GC & PS2 on it. Got it early bird price. Can't wait. Although, now that Retroid just revealed what the SFC colorway Mini looks like irl, I think I'll definitely get a Mini in that colorway, but not until sometime next year

I think it looks very nice. It looks playable to me. At least it's not novelty sized like the Anbernic RG Nano which looks like it would get tiring to play quickly.

13:36 That was my issue with it, but at least it's not as bad as the RP3. Luckily I found an elegant solution thanks to the grips sold by Skull & Co. The "FPS Master" trip is double layered, and (once cut out) the top layer is small enough to fit in the crevice in the center of the stick with just a touch of super glue. Then you can fit one of the other grips on top of and now it looks like a little mushroom that gives me perfect control and doesn't touch the outer walls. Luckily it looks like the Mini uses the same sticks as the RP2S, so I can do the same thing there.

I've already made my mind. Dreamcast in prefect 2x (or 4x downsampled) on OLED? Yes. I need that. The only thing I don't like about Retroid products is fairly loud buttons.

You shouldn't get mad at the comments. They really did miss the mark, which is frustrating since they came soooo close to making the perfect handheld for most of us. The old mindset of offeeing small 4x3 and large 16x9 devices is just wrong. What many of us want, maybe even most of us, is a 4 or 4.5 inch 4x3 screen, which could easily fit in that form factor.

I've been looking for a device like this forever. As much as I love my steam deck it just doesn't work for me in my cramped office at work (having to take out and put back the steam deck during my breaks and downtime kinda suck). Plus it's easier to play off a desk, and size-wise doesn't hog desk space to utilize. I do use my steam deck at home or when I'm at a BnB or hotel because those offer more comfort/space. This type of tech will only get better with time, but for now I'm just happy I can have a powerhouse of that size that can run PS2/GC classics well.

Shame about the noisy buttons because it'll probably be the same on the RP5 which was looking like a perfect handheld to me. Really enjoy your objective videos over people that go through a checklist and fire off spec numbers. How do you feel about the full glass screen? Does it get smudgy around the buttons/dpad? If you do put the screen protector on it, it would be interesting to know if it affects the screen quality at all.

Ya I'm gonna order the accessories this week. Regarding the smudges, the screen cleans up really easily with a micro fibre cloth. My worry is that the screen guard won't clean up as easily.

Great video just a heads up theres android 10 forks of a couple switch emulators, they arent as good but they work. Also it will charge when docked, even with the glasses I was using them last night.

I've got a Retroid Pocket 2+ and honestly I'm just not a fan of the Retroid devices, I've barely used it since I bought the RGB30 - For anything more powerful I'd rather use my Steam Deck. I think a large part of that comes down to using Android as an operating system. It never feels right on these pocket handhelds compared to dedicated Linux OSs with similar hardware, and most of my complaints really come down to the clunkiness in the software side of things. I'll stick with my other gaming handhelds for the foreseeable future and give this one a miss. Thanks for the detailed review, I'm sure someone out there is going to find this video really useful.

Emulators need to start being the "Ground" for the game dev process {ie= Make games that work in the emulator and not specifically for the original console} that way the hardware development cycles can slow down and stabilize in the market. This will become in effect "Recycling" Phase in game technologies. as time passes on virtual machines will play bigger and bigger parts of our technological downtimes.

regarding the stick LEDs - I also think they are ugly and turning them off will not make them suddenly pretty because that smoky white background is still there. I believe the commenter just wanted the same I have been asking for for ages, just plain black sticks like the good old days. Personally I think it's ridiculous that this RGB trend is seemingly coming back but it seems I'm in the minority.

Nice video, waiting for mine to ship! I'm a bit confused/disappointed about the tests for video out, as I swear I have seen videos of it where people said it charged with the dock. Also, the official dock they sell on the website clearly advertises that it charges while the devices is connected, so this would be some pretty bad false advertisement if it doesn't.. As far as the screen size, I think most android video out ends up mirroring the device, the RG Cube was pretty weird because of that with the square aspect ratio. Probably when they release the linux update for it, linux would output a full screen hopefully.

every review ive seen for this device doesn’t really talk ab how much fun they are having with the device. like it seems like this device doesn’t really have anything that ppl are drawn to. in theory it seems great but ppl were so much more receptive to the cube. also the same with the 406v, ppl didn’t really fall in love with it

After watching the whole video I can say that the first point you make (I loved the intro btw) Its the most important. I am worried because all this negative feedback of its screen/overall size that floods the internet can have consequences on how Retroid designs its future devices, and I definitely want more handhelds like this. It's not even powerful! Dimensity 1100 versus Snapdragon 865 is no increase in performance. They should have done Snapdragon 888 or Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. It would have still been affordable and it would have been a generation of growth.

You don't know what are you talking about... the 865 is perfect to do some OC in CPU and especially GPU using the active cooling to keep it at nice temperature, is possible to put the GPU up to 905Mhz (impossible to do actually in the 1100 because there's no drivers and no support), the 888 and 8 Gen 1 are SHIT in temperature, consumption and thermal throttling, actually the 865 has better battery life at that level compared to 888
