The best part of the movie to me is the twist of Natre sitting on Tun's shoulders the whole time. The fact that she doesn't want him to die but wants him to suffer the literal weight of his actions forever, and the visual of her pushing him down to where his chin is practically on his knees, it's just brilliant. That has stuck with me since I saw this movie in highschool!

It’s true BUT remember these are villians like in the Grudge. They’re not SUPPOSED to be fair that’s what makes them real villians. It wouldn’t really make sense otherwise though it IS nice to see a villian follow boundaries for once. But even the Ring was more merciful in terms of not forcing a viewer to see the tape and you even have a chance to escape the curse within a week

I remember watching this in the cinema, and I kid you not, one of the best moments was when the twist was revealed at the end and nearly everyone in the cinema rubbed their necks and shrugged the shoulders 😂 I did too. Everyone kinda went out of the cinema, doing some light exercise moves shaking their head and moving the neck just to confirm we're not having any shoulder or neck ache 😂😂😂

I warms my heart to see ghosts actually haunt and torment the ones who wronged them instead of people who were in the wrong place at the wrong time. The fact I can be happy in the end that those who really deserve what they received in the end is such a great feeling. The only person who suffered from this but didn’t deserve it was the dude girlfriend, but only because she was in his life and all the ghost did was try and let her know her boyfriends sins. Even though she suffered emotionally, she was better off this way since she knows the person she was with was a lie so she can find someone better. This is a great movie. The ending twist was oh so satisfying to see. I expected to see her in the photo there, but it was so much better to see where exactly she was. Bravo 👏

It’s true to see a Villian do NON cliche things. However we can’t expect he average villian to be this way. REAL villians aren’t supposed to be rational and will kill anyone who gets in their way. Since we as humans aren’t evil ourselves (for the most part anyway 😂) it’s natural fit us to expect good from ALL, including antagonists. But again real villains are supposed to be that way. We can’t expect them to be anything else. But still it’s nice to see something different

Such a great movie! When it was revealed that Natre's spirit was on Tun's neck the whole time, I was like "WHAT!?" It was a very satisfying and shocking reveal. @JavelinAngel1295

The thing about the Grudge is that Takeo alone killed Kayako and Toshio. But then Kayako killed him in Onryo form but now the curse just became stagnant with no real targets or reason for still being there. And because it's just a really strong curse, it would just latch upon anyone who comes in contact with anything that involved the Saeki family. It's similar to The Conjuring 1 where that Bathsheba witch cursed anyone who dared to step on her land. But with Ju On, it's just a curse where hate never ends. Kayako was wrongfully murdered by her own husband and because she killed him no so long after, depending on which version of the Grudge it is, whether she hangs him or kills him in an alleyway, or Toshio makes him disappear, she became more of a wandering Onryo who just hates everyone living who gets involved with her misery. With Shutter though, Natre was an Onryo that had both hate and love in her heart. That's why she only killed Tun's friends and not Tun himself. Because in the case of Tun, in my interpretation, she wanted to kill Tun's friends for raping her but for Tun, she wanted him to suffer and pretty much feel the pain she felt as he just stood there and watched his friends rape her. But the fact that she may have still had some love for him might be the reason why she's only latched to him and didn't kill him at all. Also she killed herself and wasn't killed by anyone. But interpretations of Vengeful ghosts differ between Thailand and Japan so it really can be interpreted in various ways. But that's just how I interpret it. Let me know what you think.

@@JavelinAngel1295 I know and if it was just the people step into the house fot cursed I would be a okay with it but someone who bid you good morning is destined to die a horrible death? Ridiculous. I love Kayako the original actress did and AMAZING job no questions asked but the appearing literally anywhere even inside a jacket got so silly to me. Still terrifying but...directionless I guess. I always interprited Kayako as more despair and sadness then rage honestly. Curse compels her to kill but the way she leaves her diary everywhere not to mention those who study it living the longest indicates she wants people to know about her injustice. If she finally Finally find peace at the end of one of the franchise would be great. Her Toshio and all the souls they have taken finally finding peace. Even Onryo like Kuchi-Sake Onna has ways to divert her.

11:57 he didn't throw himself on purpose, the Natre closed his eyes to he could not see where he was going, leading him to the window to his eventful intend of death. It happens so fast during the scene but when she appears the second time in the mirrow you can see her placing both hands infront of his eyes, causing him to stumble. He was on his right mind, only terrified, etc. So yeah, Natre got his revenge in a very unique way.

My husband and I just watched this movie last night, and we both loved it. However, we interpreted the ending slightly differently. I saw Natre sitting on Tun's shoulders as her wanting to torment him for the rest of his natural life. She saved him for last because she didn't want him to die, but to have a fate worse than death. Like the narrator says, she wants the guilt of what he's done to literally weigh on his shoulders until the day he dies. Through her coming back to haunt him, she's saying, "You got to get away from me, and what you did to me, for years. You got to forget about me. Now, you never can." But my husband saw it as Natre clinging to him in death as she did in life. In the few scenes we see them together in (when she's not scaring the ever-loving shit out of him, that is) she's constantly touching him, hugging him, and snuggling up to him. Which is perfectly fine behavior if you're an affectionate person, but Tun never loved her and so this affection was unwanted. So, this 'clinginess' continues even after she dies. She doesn't care if he's catatonic, what he did to her, or that they can never truly be together. She just wants him. That, in my opinion, is proof of a great story: When two people witness it at the same time, but interpret it in different ways.

Thank you for bringing attention to these excellent Asian horrors. "Shutter" is our favorite, followed by "White", "Silk" and "Dorm". "Shutter" follows the Thai pattern of showing a frightening ghost, but when you learn *why* she became a ghost, you begin cheering for *her* to obtain the justice she needs to find peace. I find the expression on Natre's face when she is clinging to the front of the car and smiling to be nightmare fuel. It seems that, all along, she intended on saving Jane from Tun--who is *still* trying to justify what he did. Satisfying and scary!

Loved the movie so much, the twist at the end ,and Natres abilities make this film truly one of a kind, I definitely enjoy the fact that the she was more empathetic than most ghosts - in that the only one’s suffering are those guilty - and how she show Jane what a horrible person her friends and (ex)boyfriend where instead of thinking she was like them! Also loved the never ending floor 4 scene, it’s and old reference to how (I think the Chinese) word for 4 is incredibly similar to the word Death, thus he was stuck on the death floor.

The ghost sitting on Protag's shoulder gets me more than the Camera horror. There is just something about a lingering horror that is scarier than all the jump scares for me. Seeing the ghost on his shoulder was not just creepy but it retroactively explained his pain and the heaviness he felt. The secondary symbolical meaning of guilt weighing down on his neck and shoulder is also effective.

Shutter was one of the few horror films that I dared to watch alone in the theaters. Since I was alone, I cheated on some jump scares by only watching with my peripheral vision, especially on the scene when Nat showed up on one end of the bed. And then when me and my friends watched the movie, my second time around, the scene in 8:34 that I cheated on bit me back in the ass which made it hard for me to sleep that night! I would say that among the Asian horror films I've watched, this one is my top favorite. I love the story and I think it was well-written. The scares escalate in level up until the cremation, and then the reveal about Tun's neck pain and the final scene was the cherry on top of the cake.

First off, I’d love to hear your take on the American remake, also called Shutter. There are lots of similarities, even though it’s filmed in Japan, and I think the remake honors the original. Rachael Taylor does a phenomenal job and really made me feel her “out of placeness” I think any one would feel when they move to a foreign country. Second, I need you to watch The Eye! The original is good, and the remake is interesting. Both made me feel spooked and also intrigued. There was no sequel to the American remake, but The Eye 2 is very good as a stand alone movie. You could watch it first with no issues. For me, The Eye 2 is amazing. I love the dive into Asian paranormal lore. The original Premonition, imho, is so far superior to the remake that it’s not even funny. I cried my ass off over the original premonition. Wait, have you already seen Rinne (aka Reincarnation)? It’s directed by everyone’s favorite - Takashi Shimizu. I *love* that movie. Wouldn’t mind seeing what an American remake would be like of _that_ one!!
@HorrorMine

I haven’t seen the remake but I definitely need to give it a watch! You’re the second person to recommend The Eye so it’s definitely going on my list. And yes I did see Reincarnation but a looonnngg time ago so it definitely needs a rewatch! Thanks for watching :)

@@HorrorMine I second the recommendation for THE EYE. That movie has a great last act. I dunno about the remake though. The scene early on where all of Jessica Alba’s blind friends throw her a surprise party for having a successful eye transplant (while her eyes are still bandaged) I remember made me laugh uncomfortably. As for the American SHUTTER remake I’d avoid honestly. It’s PG-13 and looks it. They do succeed in making the boyfriend an even worse human being though.
@darkliz
@darkliz 2 жыл бұрын
I liked the remake of Shutter as well mostly because it was nearly shot for shot the same film but set in Japan. The ghost in the remake is played by Megumi Okina, who was Rika in the original Grudge. Premonition hard agree on the original being far superior and it is part of a set of films with Reincarnation and Infection, which I am still unsure what happened in the end of that film. J-Horror Theatre there are six films in total.

@@TalentCaldwell The American _Shutter_ can be a bit cringe in some areas, but I thought it did a fairly good job overall. It parallels a lot of the original scenes, but with its own twists. I thought the boyfriend’s friends were pretty terrible. I liked how they introduced the ghosts in the images.

I still love this movie! It still gives me chills down my spine every time I watch it. The last scene, in particular, is incredibly bone-chilling. I also appreciate the way that the movie gradually reveals the main protagonist's backstory as it progresses. You start to understand that he wasn't what he seemed to be at the beginning.

I remember watching this movie not long after the ring and the grudge and finding it even more scary as the characters come across so well. The ladder and scare scene really worked as some of the best ever done, even getting nods in games like FEAR. I got toward the end of the review and thought "hey wait he didn't mention what really happened to Natre" but then I realised that it was all at the end which was what really makes this movie so good, once it gets going after act 2 or mid way through it never stops with twists or gasp moments one after the other. With the final twist at the end even hearing you talk about it sent chills/electricity down my back. So cool the way Natre would have needed to have saved him from his fall so that he could be alive to be forever tormented. So sorry for Jane though as she might feel it was her fault somehow I hope she didn't waste any more time on him after that visit. Only thing is that I wish we could have seen what his friends saw as they were the ones who actually did things to her. All in all one of my favourite horror movies and always in my top 3 movies when to recommend when someone asks is Asian horror really that scary. I always say Shutter, One Missed Call and A Tale of Two Sisters... one about ghosts caught on camera, one about a curse that is transmitted via your contact list on your phone (more scary now adays still compared to Ring/Ringu as its about a VHS tape) and one about psychological horror which is very common in Asian horror movies. Although Ju-On is way up there too but sometimes I think that can be too scary for people just getting into it.

If you look closely, Natre covered Tun's eyes at the end. He couldn't see where he was going and kept banging into things. Ominous stuff. So good, unlike its remake. Such a great movie. For me it hit way harder than a ton of other movies for being so tense--only the American version of The Ring and this one really haunted me, and not because of jumpscares (they don't work on me 90% of the time.) Kairo, on the other hand, was good but just didn't get to me in that way. I feel like Shutter is wildly underrated, actually.

Yet for me, the ending was not that Natre wanted to get revenge by haunting him. It's just that she loved him too much, so she couldn't leave him and stayed attached to him even when she already left the living world.
