It is probably not because of 343 is clueless or something like it, it probably is more of consistency in the whole game, let's say, someone who only plays btb tries goes to ranked, they already know what weapons are good and what weapons aren't, so, I believe having two separate sandboxes and balancing of the guns in the same game, make the learning curve of the "wtf, this gun in btb slaps but here is fkn useless" a bit harder, so I think they are trying to have the sandbox uniform across the game so anyone can pick up any playlist at anytime

I remember playing with a bunch of mates in Halo 3 or possibly Reach. And we were all mid 20’s and 30’d playing matchmaking. And some random 12 year old joins the game. And then his dad jumps on to tell us all to stop swearing that his son is only 12. We then advise the dad that the game is 15+ and that his son should not be playing the game. And if he wants his son to play a game that will gave adults playing and speaking adult language that if he wants his son to play, have him not use a headset. The dad realized he was in the wrong.

When you actually watch the video you'll see he mentions that Bungie was fairly hands off and let MLG do whatever they wanted. This whole problem stems from 343 not just letting the HCS team balance the pro playlists and tournaments themselves instead of changing the whole game to fit the competitive scene. The pro players don't want to change casual settings either, they're just as powerless as you are.

OMG Shy went OFFFFFFF at the beginning of the video. Voiced a lot of sentiments I didn't realize I had. It was M$FT that pushed me away from my first video game love and Shy that brought me back. Second half is more hopeful/thoughtful. Hope this game or the next Halo gets more things right. Personal thoughts: I do think there's a balance between toxicity and the social aspect. 343 removed the pre/post game chat and the IMO the game is less fun, BUT I also DON'T think it's less toxic (have you played ranked with rage teammates??? lol). Folks could simply set their preferred level of engagement: everything goes, respectful, and E for everyone. Your interactions with other players would set your tier. e.g. lots of folks mute me, I get reported for being toxic etc. then I'm only available to the "everything goes" tier. If an account is labeled as a child account through parental controls or something like that then that person only match makes with other E for everyone or other children accounts. Probably no the best solution over all but I think 343 can put some intentional thought into making the game more enjoyable and reviving a once thriving community. Or maybe they make enough in micro transactions they DGAF. Welcome to late stage capitalism baby!!!

I agree, but I'll play devils advocate and say that some weapons/abilities are just objectively better than others, and sometimes to a ridiculous extent. Some weapons don't really showcase any skill, which is the purpose of professional gaming. For example, think oddjob in Goldeneye where you were at a major advantage when you picked him.

So a "pro" player in halo should prioritise or risk this versus the consistency work horse weapon just like any arena shooter before it. I have been playing Halo since og days, just like you mentioned with MLG. I remember when MLG first got up and running and most of us scoffed... and then G4 started broadcasting and things flew out of control really fast. H2 tournaments went from a dribble of players competing at events to hundreds waiting to get a spot on the floor in FFA in a matter of a single summer. If you weren't ranked you were just some filthy random... and we all used that "stfu, you're some random, you're not known, go play WoW ya scrub!". After bungie walked and 343 took over, the franchise died for a lot of us. They took away the skillgap with gimmick equipment and such. I almost made a return in 5 when they tried to keep up with the mobility improvements introduced in other games. That booster really made for some killer strafe tricks, and with that came another step back toward that H2 skillgap. And now here we are with the overmanaging control freak corporate influence... "its our game, you play how *we* think is fair" garbage. Alas, now I'm old and slow and my eyesight is twitchy, fingers cramp after only an hour of play. I will just live my days vicariously through folks like you Shy. Thanks, for keeping us all up to date on the state of things!

You're so right about the social features though. In recent years they've been slowly stripped away for the sake of padding the corners for people who don't have thick skin, often the types who'd never even touch a game like Halo to begin with. And I can understand have tight rules in a game like Roblox where your average player is an actual child, but Halo is a game played entirely by full grown adults. Just have an easy mute / block function, and we can police ourselves. I don't like games that treat the player like a baby.

I agree that a more robust mute/report/block system is better than just outright gutting the social aspects, but I don't think it really has anything to do with "thick skin", or that people without "thick skin" aren't playing Halo. I'm a grown ass man. I grew up playing Halo when Halo 3 and Reach were the hot games. I've heard some nasty things online, I've also said some nasty things online. And I never took any of it to heart or expected others to. But now I am an adult. When I hop on Halo after a long day at work, I'm not trying to get called a word that hasn't been used since the civil war by a 15 year old. It has nothing to do with being offended or not having thick skin, it's just not fun. That isn't how I want to spend my time. I'm aware some people (a bit weirdly, I'll add) really enjoy being called and calling others terrible things and think it adds to their experience and makes it more fun. To each their own I guess, but that shit is lame to me. Talk shit between matches, call someone garbage, flex your skill on them, sure. But the reason these features got gutted is because it devolved from trash talk to just seeing who could be a worse person and make the experience more miserable for everyone else. I think the only way things like proximity chat and pre/post game lobbies ever come back is if there is a system in place that actually (and fairly) punishes people who are just pieces of shit instead of just shrugging it off as "oh well it's just a part of gaming, toughen up or go away".

It should be up to players to filter who they do and dont want to play with. Don't care to listen to a local 4Chan denizen get on an argument on the mic? Just mute them. The players don’t get to make the rules and change the gameplay when they feel like it. They have input, but the rules and legal gameplay are managed by the league whose main purpose is improving the *product* for fans. Not only do you reflect the opinions and views of multiple different camps in a very thorough and fair way, you also offered a reasonable and productive critique on the franchise at large. Too often, videos of this ilk are primitively and clumsily boiled down to “this thing bad” or “this thing good.” And oftentimes, it comes across as either whiney or grift-y. I'll never understand why weapon denial itself isn't considered a skill. That's always been the case with halo, there are power weapons and it's your job to make sure your opponent doesn't get that weapon. If both sides have that weapon in each side (like a sniper) then great that's fair. Otherwise why not just make the BR the only weapon and make all naps perfectly symmetrical. This would obviously suck for everyone minus the pros.

Argh. Multiplayer. Okay, I think I threw my phone on the grass nature strip when I was completely lost, had an appointment with the real estate, and could not see because of the sun, and the state of my eyes. That was one time. In a city in a valley with skin-burning smog. If I threw a controller in the house playing multiplayer, I'd get arrested by the cops, despite the fact the guy down the street is the one who spreads the air juice around and destroys my lungs (there's always at least one). I have never thrown a controller. This is because there is no point in me being anything other than a casual player who plays for the campaign, and liked it when there was a story behind each map, but could never keep up with other players.

Hey Shyway, this is a really great video and I appreciate the constructive recommendations you make. I haven't played much Infinite in a bit, but it really feels like 343 and the Pros could meet halfway with their own ruleset like you described, and it certainly wouldn't have to impact the social players. It's interesting to hear about these debates within the pros as well as the GAs. I also agree that GAs shouldn't exist and 343 should be getting the Pro ruleset into a place where it aligns sufficiently

I got an xbox series s mostly in order to play halo again with halo infinite, and i think we all know how infinite was on release. ive concluded - it wasnt halo i missed, it was bungie. After months of infinite, I got pulled away for another game and never went back. Im looking forward to bungie releasing marathon.

As an OG Halo fan from literally Day 1, I gave up on 343's version of Halo a long time ago. I tried, I really did, but I just kept getting disappointed over and over and it just wasn't fun anymore. I want nothing more than for Halo to be the biggest game in the world as it deserves to be, but I have absolutely ZERO hope in that. To me, Bonnie Ross and 343 will always be responsible for destroying Halo.

The M392 Bandit did NOT deserve the rate of fire nerf by the stretch of anyone's imagination. The Bandit Evo did. Halo is now fucked and we're no closer to getting back to BR starts whatsoever. Halo is no longer a serious game.

The overarching problem is competitive not being able to make their own rules, its that simple which doesn't make sense considering the tools to make said changes exist. The GAs are just a symptom of that problem.
