The title translates as “Go, my love” or “Walk, My Love.” The lyrics are actually an Irish folk song about a young woman saying farewell to her lover, who is leaving to embark on a military career. What a beautiful melody!

close its more along the lines of the flight of the wild geese. Where in the treaty of Limerick some 12,000-20,000 (depending on source) soldiers of Ireland agreed to leave for military service in mainland Europe in exchange for guaranteed rights for the Irish back home after the Williamite War. Patrick Sarsfield signed it and shortly after signing the French fleet showed up to help the Irish, although Sarsfield refused ro continue the fight despite outcry believing in honor, and believing that he had negotiated a treaty to respect the rights of the Irish people and that it would be upheld. It never was, within weeks the British tore it up, replaced the protected rights with penal laws stripping the Irish Carholics of their land and removing every right of citizenship. "I’ll sell my rock, I’ll sell my reel I’ll sell my only spinning wheel to buy my love a sword of steel" She proclaims her willingness to virtually go broke in order to support her beloved and his new life. I’ll dye my petticoats, I’ll dye them red and it’s round the World I will beg for bread until my parents would wish me dead. The Irish brigade of France wore vivid red uniforms to show their support for the Catholic Stuarts. So she was wearing the colors that her beloved was wearing in the Irish brigade to shoe her support for him, all while having been stripped of her own citizen rights and being forced to beg. He didn't choose to leave, he was made a permanent exile. She was willing to give her life for freedom and love. It's a bittersweet hopeful cry that her lover will one day return, but knowing it is not likely That's the more traditional belief on it here

I think it has been added to duolingo, so it might get a slight boost in popularity yet. As for the Indian comments, I found an article with someone born or living in Scotland attempting to learn their families language (hindi) and noting speakers mix words lost on them in hindi- technically 'hindlish' I suppose. To both Fraser Mackenzie Production and Ella Roberts: I don't think I can articulate just how beautiful this is. What makes Ella and Fraser Mackenzie Production different from anyone else is not just the gorgeous cinematography, voice, and instrumentation, but how they are bringing back songs long forgotten to history. As an American, with Scottish and Irish blood (with a dash of German) I cannot understand the Gaelic words, though I would love to learn it, but one doesn't need to understand the Gaelic words to grasp the meaning and emotion of the song. Ella, keep up your splendid work. I feel that you surpass almost all of the musical superstars I know. Stay humble, for that is what separates the truly talented musicians. You remind me of what Brianna looks like in Diana Gabaldon's outlander books, even more than Sophie Skelton (she is beautiful too) from the show. Fraser Mackenzie, keep up the superb quality. The more historical significance of the songs, the better they are. Keep that up!

A german band called 'Faun' sang it too, with german lyrics but not exactly the same meaning. I think. It is called 'Wilde Rose'.

I remember that from the old Peter, Paul & Mary album: it wasn't until I read Joyce's "Ulysses" that I understood some of the chorus...

There are many tunes from Scotland and ireland which have carried on in Appalachia, often with a change of lyrics and timing from 6/8 to 4/4. I'm from the foothills of Appalachia myself.

Like a candle burning bright and strong your voice is a guiding me home. By far the best version of this song.

The Scottish stress sounds give me the Vietnamese familiar stress sounds of the entire Vietnamese ways to learn the British systems of correct words both in Vietnam and Britain. Thank Ella of your sounds in the Scottish tongue. I apologize of any inconvenience to the UK.
