Si4732 ATS 20 Full band Radio. This Tiny SSB battery Backed Shortwave Radio Is Really Cool!

The folks over at SDRGEEK watched a video I made on the Radio Shack DX394 and asked if I'd be interested in reviewing one of their Si732 SSB Shortwave radios.
HECK YES!
So here it is. Very compact, but with all the bands and modes you want. A crisp, but tiny screen, and very low USB based power consumption. I also love that they managed to pack a battery in it for mobile use!

I'd use this as a single purpose unit, camp out on a single frequency with it 24/7, like during storms for ARRL's authorized hurricane watch net activations on 7268 and 14235 for example. Thanks for posting his rig, the intro music always makes my sunday morning complete for some reason and I look forward to your reviews.

That's hilarious that you had that placed on top of the dx394 that's exactly how I have mine in my shack. For the money you can't beat it for a small compact radio that can be thrown in a bug out bag at any moment or used as a desktop radio with external long wire antenna. Farpoint farms you always review my favorite radios and a couple I didn't know about that I went out and bought after your reviews LOL 😆.

I think it's a nice little radio. If you're over the age of 50, better purchase some reading glasses to see the display. I don't need another Radio. If I was to get this one, I would get one to put in my go kit or jump bag.

Mine came yesterday, charged it up and was picking up lots of stations in my living room last night just on the supplied antenna. Love the size and form factor. I also pickef up a Dx 394A yesterday for a good price. Really like that one as a base station. I have an awesome C Crane for travel, but I think thia little Ats-20 will be useful as well. Shortwave/MW radios will be like gold when they shut the Internet and or Grid off someday soon.

A buddy of mine gave me one of these radios. I'm learning it slowly, but I'll tell you this. I'm impressed with it so far. I think I'll be adding another antenna to my 'tower' (yeah, like the wife would ACTUALLY allow me to have a tower) so that I get more range. Built a crank-up antenna setup for my Alpha V, I need to get a video posted of it all. Even stepped up to some LMR-400. Hope all is well up there on the hill my friend. Wavin' from the 'Quay.

I feel shortwave has been making a big come back over the past year. The complete distrust of the media (including youtube) has people heading back to shortwave where verification of events is much better. Get those HAM licenses!!

There is a difference between short wave and ham radio. When I think of short wave I think of foreign country broadcast. Ham radio is on high frequency but also on VHF, UHF and higher frequencies. Get them HAM license is good but also use them as well, use the two meter band it could be taken away by the FCC. Cell companies are asking for that band.

You can flash this radio with other firmware, more useful tuning in ssb mode and bigger frequency digits, also firmware have a battery indicator and synchronous am mode YT deleting comment with link. Firmware by R8CEN for ATS-20

My first was a sears. Silvertone. (R) Made in the 40s somebody's living room" king" it had a raft of tubes and went to lima ohio to fair radio(r) fir that tube that that tested a bit better. The the first diode given me by my mother. working at rca i watch all gear drop in size. Tks

The DX394 in the background! I bought one new in the early 1990's. They were big buck receivers, but the performance never really measured up. The sensitivity wasn't par for amateur radio use, and the selectivity was very poor. Still got her though.

LW here is used by NDBs (Non Direction Beacons) example : here in Virginia at Chesterfield County, VA is the Pubbs NDB which 392 khz AM and it transmits, in CW/Morse Code, the letters "C F".

Last time I used side band was listening to "Radio For Peace International" Started broadcasting with a 500 watt transmitter out of Costa Rica around 41 meters and on sideband. Only broadcast sideband I remember. Maybe I can use your radio for sideband 11 meter to see what goes on off AM not for local consumption.

That's where I'd try to use it. Antenna is a challenge. I've succeeded with a wire outside the car. Changing conditions while driving is an unavoidable problem. Once on location then it's hopefully good reception.

I've seen Long Wire antennas for sale and they are all 23ft. Does a longer wire work better and if so should they be in 23ft increments? Interesting radio

I’m Australian & I’ve been a SW & LW listener on & off since I was 12. A longer wire will work better on MW & LW coz it’ll still be a lot smaller than the wavelengths of signals in those frequency ranges. For SW, 20ft to 40ft is quite good. Beyond say, 70ft, & the longwire is similar in size to the signal wavelength so it’s performance might be poorer coz it will have a different directional pattern, & it may require an antenna tuning unit to match it better to the receiver input. Increments have nothing to do with the choice of wire length. But larger aerials in your backyard are more likely to pick up hash from neighbours’ computers & TVs, & from power lines. Also, a really long antenna wire that’s only 3ft above the ground won’t be as good a wire that’s only half as long but is 8ft above the ground.

Have you ever tried a C Crane shortwave radio? I was told they are super good radio's. But I have 2 large shortwave radios. 2 mid sized similar to the c crane radio. Then I got one from countycomm that looks like a small walkie-talkie but by the weight it feels empty. That being said it has good sound quality and seems to pick up well. I just wonder what the differences are vs there performance??

I can't believe you never properly tuned in an SSB signal and played a few seconds of audio. You just got it close, so it sounded like the guy was on helium and then went on back to AM SW.

Fm broadcast band only 87mhz to 108mhz, for 10 or 11 m it's am & upper and lower side band only no FM. Hope that helps my friend

Hell I never heard it receive anything AT ALL. Why not do another review with it actually receiving some ssb on 40 meters or wwv, anything to show it works other than noise and static. What a joke. Guess it's good for white noise.

Poor sound quality , too much noise interface . Better of getting a tecsun pl-330 for around £20 more which also has airband .

The PL-330, while a nice radio, doesn't receive the airband. Just regular local FM radio.
