Holy Jesus, I had to work on this one more than what I'd like to admit.
At first sight this etude looked kinda easy, but trying to play the repeated notes with the right pinkie while trying to follow the melody and keeping a nice touch is a real challenge, and something I could make a whole video about.
You never stop improving how to let your wrist loose, that's for sure!
It was worth though, I learned something new and this piece is not bad at all.

this is one of my favorite piano pieces, and yours is the first performance on YT that gets the tempo right. normally i think that pieces should be played slower than they are, but this song remains the exception for me. the faster it's played, the better it conveys a sense of focused madness, which is the emotion i believe the piece is aiming at.

Thank you very much! True I usually listen it played at a slower tempo and it's something I realized after doing this video because I hadn't listened too many executions of this piece before (only one, actually, which was still slower anyway). I like it with slower tempo to be honest, I just think it conveys different emotions at different speeds. It's cool a set of interpretations exist so the same piece can vary quite a lot!

@@marcopianoplayer so true, thank you for sharing. i think im tempo-biased on this one because i first heard it on spotify (played by Olli Mustonen), which struck me as being "just right", as Goldilocks would say.

@@nontologyI feel you, first listenings more often than not become "the correct versions" in our mind 😁 In my case the first two that come to my mind are Ashkenazy Chopin etudes or Horowitz Chopin op. 35. I changed my mind about the first, still not about the second though!

@@marcopianoplayer haha, guilty as charged, you are so right! is there a name for that phenomenon?? though there are a few songs that I knew I loved at first, but I had to seek out multiple performances to find the goldilocks fit, eg Scarlatti's Sonata in B minor, Chopin's Waltz in C sharp minor, Hungarian Rhapsody #2 (who could possibly outdo Tiffany Poon?), Mendelssohn's Venetian Gondola Songs

@@nontology I don't know really, I'll just call it "first listening bias" haha. True anyway, sometimes you need to listen multiple interpretations to find the one you think it's closer to how you think that piece should sound!

Really good sound. I haven't started learning this piece yet, but I like to watch a lot of people play before I start learning it so I know what makes a good/bad sound. You're definitely top notch around here. I'm sure the grind to get it to sound like this was challenging!
@marcopianoplayer
@marcopianoplayer 8 ай бұрын
Thank you! Yeah it was a real challenge also from a pure technical point of view, because the repeated notes are really tricky. When I first listened to this piece I thought the way to learn it and make it sound right would be way easier than what it was, but it was a challenging enough grind in the end 😄

Grazie! È uno Yamaha C5 venuto particolarmente bene, l'unica cosa di cui potrei lamentarmi sono le corde degli acuti che sono particolarmente predisposte a rompersi rispetto ad altri pianoforte ma per il resto non si può dir nulla 😁

You play really well. Thanks for sharing. You helped me copy finger numbers. 😅 I have difficulty playing the right hand comfortably at this speed. Are there any exercises you can recommend while practicing this piece? Maybe pedal use is also important.
@marcopianoplayer
@marcopianoplayer 7 ай бұрын
The most important thing is to play the little finger repeated notes with your wrist and not trough articulation! If you see you're feeling too tense slow down and think about that until it becomes natural. The pedal is important too, of course, but there are many ways to play this piece and my use of pedal is very personal. I think I will just stop postponing it and I'll start working on a video tutorial about this etude because you're not the first asking me tips to study this piece and I think a video like that could be useful for many people!
