The fourth symphony was composed between 1909 and 1911, and received its premiere in Helsinki under the composer's baton on April 3, 1911. Critics and historians have speculated about the dark tone of the symphony, with some suggesting that it reflected the troubled times before the First World War. But it may also reflect the composer's own fear of death. In 1908 he had to have a cancer removed from his throat. Although the operation was successful it left him with thoughts of mortality which lasted for years. Whatever the motivation, the symphony has enjoyed popularity with audiences since its introduction over a century ago.
