The pinnacle golden standard for this whirlwind force of a concerto! Perfection does not exist in reality but this version to me is perfection!

I have always found Sibelius' music inadequately performed in the concert hall. His symphonies and tone poems speaks of a profundity and clarity than many composers of his time, a contrast exemplified by the often lengthy excessiveness of Mahler's symphonies, and his music has a distinctively Finnish timbre to it. This is a great performance by Vengerov and Barenboim. One must also listen to Sibelius' second and fifth symphonies.

Obile Wong I agree. This is a great performance. I love this violin concerto. Sibelius' 2nd and 5th symphonies are fantastic...but there's more... the strings in final movement in his 1st, the brooding 4th symphony, mysterious 6th, classical and difficult 3rd and the very special 7th... Not to mention, as I feel it anyway, his "goodbye" in Tapiola... I've always been such a fan of the great man's work.

Sometimes I feel like Maxim Vengerov can be too free spirited and is prone to going off the rails a bit more than many other soloists but, I love that about him because I feel like he's trying to catch lightning in a bottle a near impossible task and you are almost destined to fail but, now and again.... with this Sibelius Concerto I really think he did exactly that. Caught lightning in a bottle. chills down my spine from the first few notes. He may not always HIT. but when he does, look out. you will have absurd goosebumps and feel like you just had a once in 10 life time's experience. He just needs that one absolute firework to make every other unhinged moment worth it and boy does he bring the firework here. anyways, that's just my opinion. sorry if it's a bit strong.

I personally find around 19:47 to be my favorite passage. Hard to pick and choose since there are so many good ones but the poco crescendo being used is marvelous. Its expressed in a way that makes it highly remarkable for me.

The violinist is undoubtably in love with himself, and truly so - what a terrific capability - but whether he is in love with the music he is playing is to be questioned. How different from Heifetz!
@organboi
@organboi 4 ай бұрын
Oh really? Undoubtedly? What makes you so sure? Most instrumentalists of any level of fame don't think highly of themselves. Stop speculating. You have zero evidence. Vengarov seems opposite of what you claim. I see no sign of a big ego. He's an utter master and plays spectacularly and always has. He may move around a little more than most, but hardly. This man honors the COMPOSER. Not himself.

@@organboino need to take serious what that person says. I think he just copy and pastes his comment wherever he finds a great performance, to get attention or somethinf ;/ I just tell you Arielpaul, maybe do it somewhere else, and not in the comments of the world's best soloist 😅😅

@ly2867, probably assuming that because he has something of a dramatic flair to his play style that he's egotistical - they may feel that it draws more attention to him rather than his sound. Very silly, nonetheless but that's my guess.
