From Wikipedia:
"Siberian Khatru" is the third, shortest and final song of progressive rock band Yes album Close to the Edge. Live versions of the song are found on the Yessongs, Keys to Ascension, and Live at Montreux 2003 albums, and it also is on several compilation albums. It is notable for being the only song on Close to the Edge that is not a multi-part suite. However, Siberian Khatru contains several separate melodies, tones, and sections in the tradition of progressive rock. The live version on the 2-disc album set Yessongs is preceded by Igor Stravinsky's Firebird Suite and Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring is an acknowledged influence on the song itself, thus the introduction.
Siberian Khatru begins with an introductory guitar riff, after which the main instrumental theme (played by the keyboards) is introduced. The structure of this theme is a four-measure phrase consisting of three bars in common time (4/4) and the last bar in 3/4. This theme is repeated until the verse section begins. The lyrics start at about 1:05. The song progresses through various sections, featuring solos by Steve Howe and Rick Wakeman. There is a polymetric section featuring the guitar, playing in a meter of 12, and bass and drums playing in a meter of 8. Jon Anderson begins singing seemingly random two-syllable words and phrases, which then becomes a Yes tradition. The conclusion is similar to the introduction, returning to the main instrumental theme with a guitar solo on top of it.
Lyrics:
Sing, bird of prey
Beauty begins at the foot of you, do you believe the manner?
Gold stainless nail
Torn through the distance of man as they regard the summit
Even Siberia goes through the motions, hold out and hold up
Hold down the window (outbound, river)
Hold out the morning that comes into view (bluetail, tailfly)
River running right on over my head
How does she sing?
Who holds the ring and ring and you will find me coming?
Cold reigning king
Hold all the secrets from you as they produce the movement
Even Siberia goes through the motions, hold out and hold up
Hold down the window (outbound, river)
Hold out the morning that comes into view (bluetail, tailfly)
River running right over the outboard, river
Bluetail, tailfly
Luther in time
Dood'ndoodit, dah, d't-d't-dah
Hold down the window
Hold out the morning that comes into view
Warm side, the tower
Green leaves reveal the heart spoken Khatru
Gold stainless nail
Torn through the distance of man as they regard the summit
Cold reigning king
Shelter the women that sing as they produce the movement
River running right on over
Then over my head outboard, river
Bluetail, tailfly
Luther in time
Suntower asking
Cover, lover
June cast, moon fast
As one changes
Heart gold, leaver
Soul mark, mover
Christian, changer
Called out, savior
Moon gate, climber
Turn round, glider

Listened to this album thousands of times, and it never gets old. Genius, power, beauty, groove. Three symphonies of light and darkness, inspired playing and confusing emotions and mysterious meanings. My mother was beginning to die from Alzheimer's in 1975, and plain old rock and roll weren't deep enough for me. This music brought healing and beauty to my young life. Tears in my eyes as I listen to this transcendent music at 55 years old. Listened first when I was twelve. I have never been the same.

I learned this on guitar as a young geeky looking kid in early 70s... and no one knew that I knew guitar. And then one day a girl in one of my classes walked by my house where my bedroom window faced the street. (50 feet from the street). My music was LOUD. Next day she said, "I saw you playing. What was that ?" Changed my life ! YES ! ;-)

OMFW! And i bet your parents were asking "what did rock music ever do for you!?" It is kind of hard to say "well, it helped me navigate a very awkward thing that parents wanted to "talk" about it, and teachers wanted to "educate" me about it, but God forbid if some one girl just took a few minutes to show me it!" :)

This was Yes at the peak of their powers. At almost nine minutes, it never drags for me. I heard them do this live. The remarkable thing was that every studio effect was reproduced almost flawlessly on stage. They took their studio engineer, Eddie Offord, on tour with them and he made them sound fantastic live too.

Jim Philips I've seen/heard it live numerous times. I have to say, the YesSongs version is incomparable in terms of energy and Steve Howe's guitar. I even dig Alan White's drum part (I'm a huge Bruford fan, but let's face it, White was incredible on YesSongs; and to think he learned that material in three days/rehearsals.

This version of Yes hit their Zenith in 1977 with Going for the one. I did not see them until 1984 and later in 1994. To me both of those shows compare well with the 1970's shows I've seen on video. YesSongs is certainly them at the high point of their first artistic and commercial peak and they were magnificent at the time. The experience of Yes doing Tales From Topographic Ocean changed them as a band and it is a miracle that the 1970's did not destroy them all. Offord of course was both a genius and to a certain extent a virtuoso technician if such a thing exists. But seeing them play in 1984 they were again at a new artistic and Commercial peak. The much hated album of Big Generator was very good but bad marketing decisions had the effect of smothering the bands 1980's run and pushing Trevor Rabin to part time duty. The poor decisions were naming the Album Big Generator after a cut that should never have been put on record. And releasing Love Will Find a way as the first single when Rhythm of Love was a far superior cut and would not have a backlash from long time Yes and Classic Rock fans.Rhythm of Love was not exactly Roundabout but it did not have to be. Nothing on 90125 was very much like Fragile or Close to the Edge either and they did fine. The 1984 show was however lifted as much by the songs from the 3rd through 5th albums as it was by the new Music. The 1994 incarnation was much the same but with several new song from perhaps the bands most under rated album of their career Talk. If the Calling had been pushed by a more aggressive company it could have been their biggest hit since the 90125 era. It has been 49 years and I am not comfortable saying that 1973 was their Summit and it has been all downhill since then. I see at least 5 major peaks and several smaller one with 1984 or so and 1973 being the highest points. and other spots being very close.

I Love the way the Guys are able to seamlessly vary the presence or forte of the guitar and keyboards and have each fade back and come forth perfectly, with Chris and Bill like the glue holding it all together, there is so much going on in the music that it overwhelms your brain with listening to parts and the whole simultaneously. They perfected these complex musical dramas that are like certain poens you always remember and love. Which is an evident token of why people who Love YES are people who love Order and Symmetry at the core of their being, and rightly so. If all of that which exists is an ongoing symphony of variety A complex arrangement of melodies and harmonies then it only stands to reason that our music is greatest when it encapsulates that same grandeur.

Absolutely perfect YES. Their musical sound at this particular time in ROCK history was undeniably unique, progressive and yet still captivating. You didn't need a "single" on the radio from the band to catch your attention back then. Sometimes a bong did the trick. There will never be another band that captures their authority when it comes to this particular style of music from the 70's. RIP Chris.

When I was a much younger man I visited one of the local wineries. I asked the person who offered me some tastings "I don't understand what it is that people like about wine....I mean it kinda bitter." So he said "Well when you drink wine, what do you drink"? I said "I don't know, something sweet...Boone's farm!" He proceeded to pour me something he called a "good Cabernet." He asked me to taste it, and I did. Then he asked "what do you taste"? I said "I don't know...alcohol" He said "Taste it again...and really concentrate on taste in all different parts of your mouth and tell me what you taste." I said "I think I can taste some kind of berry." He said "try it again...anything else." I said "Yes...maybe some vanilla and black pepper." He said "See..when you develop a sense for it, this wine will be different every time you taste it. That's called "complexity", whereas the "Boone's Farm" will always be exactly the same...just a generic sweet wine. What makes the wine superior are its many layers." That little conversation really sat with me and I have used it as an analogy for many things. YES music is like that to me. I hear this piece as a whole and it's great. But then I hear it again and focus only on Chris Squire's bass part, and it's unbelievably interesting in and of itself! Then I realize that there are so many other layers going on that I wasn't focusing on. So I listen to it again and focus on Bruford's drumming only....amazing! And then Steve Howe creating so many different textures...awesome. Not too mention the genius that is Rick Wakeman. Then I listen to the piece as a whole, and focus on it's structure. So well thought out. This piece, like most of YES, has held my interest for four decades because it is, as the wine guy put it, "complex." .... always different and ever new. Isn't that what great art is all about?

+Eddie Reynolds I was listening to this song in the car today and thought roughly the same thing. If the members of YES existed back in the 1600s they'd be hailed as classical musical geniuses. If Strauss, Beethoven et al wrote in the 1970s I wonder how much their music would sound and be appreciated like YES's music? YES is today's equivalent of classic music. I hope it's as revered in a couple hundred years as it is today.

The instrumental dialogue that was laid down on this track was (and, remains) mind-boggling. The vocals.........oh, my............whew! Even during my adolescence, I couldn't imagine how these artists put this together in such a cohesive way. And, I didn't even understand what that meant, back then. I just knew that it seemed like organized chaos - each instrument had its own story to tell, and the vocals pulled every note together to paint the big picture.

I heard Yes open the show with this song in 1978 during the tormato tour. It was flawless. The great shows you always remember. This was one of them!

Yes, it is beautiful, I've always heard a very sad and old merry-go-round, not something you want to dig out and listen to with a broken heart. I do love it though.

Close to the Edge revolutionary for me. Listened to it daily until I left Seattle for NYC on a bus. Huge influence on me.

I'm lucky enough or old enough to be able to say I experienced and enjoyed fully the "times" and the "music" of the era when "Close to the Edge" was new. Right Evan?

IMHO, this was the best song Yes ever composed. I've been a Yes fan since the very beginning. And to date, this is the band's best-ever song. Next to this is the Relayer album. How I wish Bruford and Moraz could've played w/ Yes at the same time ... Who knows what they may have created!

but how cool it is that they did two duet albums together - and i'd rank them with anything yes or ex-yes members did outside of the band. and they both contributed to fish out of water.
