In Maleficent, the king actually was just a soldier and Maleficent was feared by the previous king so he told the soon to be king that he would be throned if he killed Maleficent, but he only took her wings to make it seem like he did so and then he was throned. Gurrll... Stefan and Maleficient were not kids when he cut her wings off in the movie. They were grown up. In fact, the scene is treated like something akin to sexual assault, by a loved one. But yes, in the original animated movie, as in the fairytale it was inspired by, it was over not being invited, or by being slighted in some other way.

So now knowing that this monarchy stuff was so toxic that it could even corrupt the boy who threw away his ring, then she was going to end it and get revenge at the same time, which she altered the spell by adding to it, the boys own words, that he told her on her 16th Birthday, since she thought they were a lie. Also Stefan was grown when he came back to the Moors and drugged a grown Maleficient before cutting off her wings.
