Long-time fan! As others attest, "Sicario" is nearly perfect: a complex narrative based on realities we only read about in the news; characters whose motives we can't discern; a naive protagonist w/ whom we identify; and the most sublime set-pieces imaginable. "Sicario" is unreal: filmmaking of the highest order. SO SO good! p.s. I nearly forgot about the score by Johann Johannsson (had to look him up) who died only a few years after the film was released. "Nothing will make sense to your American ears, and you will doubt everything that we do, but in the end you will understand." Fun Fact: Having just completed "Everest" (2015), an exhausted Josh Brolin turned down this film. Cinematographer Roger Deakins sent him an email imploring him to join the project. Since it was so uncharacteristic of Roger Deakins to take this stand, Josh Brolin changed his mind. Also, when discussing the score with composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, director Denis Villeneuve said he wanted the the sound of a threat. Denis Villeneuve makes movies that make you think. His film ARRIVAL was a thinking person's sci-fi movie. SICARRIO is a thinking person's crime thriller. PRISONERS is a meticulous mystery that leans into horror. And currently, both of his DUNE movies are shaping up to be his magnum opus. He may arguably be the most stylish and talented director currently working in modern cinema. Even his BLADE RUNNER 2049 sequel was considered to be an impossible task in terms of measuring up to Ridley Scott's original, but Denis V. knocked it out of the park and created a work of art that stands on its own. Ok I might have missed someone saying this already and if so I apologize, Matt recruited Kate because the team is CIA and it’s against federal law for the CIA to operate inside the United States without a domestic agency, where Kate was FBI. FBI is kind of like cops but for the federal government so they operate in every state in the US. The CIA is the agency that’s responsible for protecting the United States and its interests outside of the US. So basically, the CIA are spies and enforcers around the globe outside the US and FBI are cops that deal with stuff on the federal level inside the states. Matt is CIA and he recruited Alejandro as his enforcer because he had reason to go after the Mexican cartel, Kate was needed so Matt and his team could “legally” work inside the US, and the strike team in the end were either special forces/SEALS or government contractors who used to be special forces/SEALS. Matt needed to push the cartel’s buttons with Manuel so bad so they could locate Fausto, the big boss in this film. You need to get to the second film just let in mind the differences among FBI, CIA, contractors (the military dudes and Matt’s friend with the glasses) and where they are “legally” allowed to work. Oh, and Kate saw things she shouldn’t have because our government was sending CIA and military forces into an allied country (Mexico) because the cartel was a bigger issue. Whether or not they had approval from the Mexican government that’s kind of up to the viewers. I feel they had some approval as the dude who was speaking to Alejandro before they messed up that dude in interrogation but if Matt and his team were identified they would probably have denied knowing anything about it. Watch the second one, you won’t be disappointed.

So @18:52 when you guys are wondering what he was doing, the guy was giving the brother water and making him drink all of it, and then the other guy brings a 5 gallon water jug, it’s to waterboard him, put a rag over his face and slowly pour water directly on the rag, basically drown him. Which happens much easier when you’re full of water already.

Waterboarding effects your ability to breathe and makes you feel like you are drowning. Having a full belly of water would not effect that at all. These guys were already so far outside "the boundaries" I don't think they used waterboarding, which is used when you are not allowed to use torture. I don't know what he did with the water, but I am sure it wasn't good.

Two other must-see movies by the same writer: Wind River and Hell Or Highwater. Wind River may be my favorite of the three.

I remember when I first watched this... the tension... the build up... then getting to the end... I was like "Damn!"... (Man On a Mission).

20:40 they didn't pick him because he's a trained lawyer, that was the reason given in the conference room - "No lawyers on this train." 6:55 Now what possible reason could they want to keep a lawyer off the team?

Solid video, guys. Glad to see people spreading the word on this excellent film. I think it might still be Denis' best work. Easily top three neo-westerns of all time.
