@@MBIRTIRoma I’ve heard people say this, but no one can articulate why. I usually judge the quality of the film based on how well it achieved what it set out to do. The last "stand off" between Alejandro and Kate is amazing. The framing is perfect, Kate framed in the darkness of her balcony - her life will be forever tainted by the events she saw, while Gillick is framed in light sky - his soul is clear, he has zero issue with what he's done and who he is.

Yet, she is standing "above" him in the literal and arguably moral sense. Great scene. "Nothing will make sense to your American ears, and you will doubt everything that we do, but in the end you will understand." Fun Fact: Having just completed "Everest" (2015), an exhausted Josh Brolin turned down this film. Cinematographer Roger Deakins sent him an email imploring him to join the project. Since it was so uncharacteristic of Roger Deakins to take this stand, Josh Brolin changed his mind. Also, when discussing the score with composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, director Denis Villeneuve said he wanted the the sound of a threat. The one film Denis Villeneuve used as a comparison was director Steven Spielberg's "Jaws" (1975) (music by: John Williams).

I'm glad they picked up on both the cinematography and the soundtrack, those two elements add a huge amount to the tone and style of the film and are responsible for elevating it above 'just another good thriller.' The wide-angle shots of the desert, especially from the sky, really draw you into the whole environment of the film. Hannah's comment about how we're in the same boat as Kate the whole time, not really understanding what's going on or why we're there, is spot on too. Even approaching the finale as we go into the tunnels there's deliberately no proper explanation of the plan, no clear route, no idea what 'we' are supposed to be doing. I'm glad you did this one, it's one of my favourite films of all time.

I was watching a short documentary about how to tell a story with a lens. Anyways, this movie was referenced as a gold standard. A few interesting details, the point the Kate's view of the world starts to change is literally when she is between two worlds. The scene in the tunnels in shot in pure darkness. There is a lot of moments in the film where Kate is in the dark about her role and what is going on. Who is shown emerging from the darkness and into the light? Kate as she is about to learn the true nature of the people she is helping.

3:38 There have been a lot of mishaps with No Knock Warrants in the United States. In some communities they are being disallowed because innocent people have been killed or injured. Fun fact, a policemen reviewed this movie and said seasoned cops wouldn’t be vomiting over the bodies in the wall. He said after a couple of years working crime and accident scenes, cops get a really strong stomach.

El Paso is the border city between Mexico and the United States. Juarez is literally within walking distance. You can be on a balcony in El Paso, Texas and see Juarez before the horizon. It’s one of the most beautiful yet deadly cities.

Denis Villeneuve is a wonderful director. I love how the studios let him make beautiful big budget cerebral masterpieces, even if they know they do not always do well at the at the box office (Blade Runner 2049 for e.g.). Can't wait to see his 2nd part of Dune as the first was stunning thing to behold.

There's two more by the same Writer "Taylor Sheridan" that you should give a watch too.... both equally awesome in their action and suspense "Hell or High Water ( 2016..... a modern wester feel to it ) "Wind River" (2017 ... has both Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) & Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlette Witch/ Wanda )

He is a man who lost everything and it blackened his soul to the point where he wanted vengeance and when he came face to face with the boss who took everything from him and the boss witnessed the very thing that he created was pure fear and that is what Benicio Del Toro showed and more.

I'm not one for intros but that was hilarious, between the comments and the memes, 10/10! I rarely laughed so much at one of your reactions but that was amazing, glad you watched this movie, Denis Villeneuve is an amazing director and I can't remember for the music but it sets the tone to so many scenes. Definitely watch the 2nd one too, it's not directed by Denis Villeneuve anymore but it's a decent sequel. And like others have said, absolutely watch more of Denis' movies that he directed, they're all an experience!

Denise Villeneuve is in my top 3 directors of all time. Everything he touches is a masterpiece. This movie is part of the "Frontier" trilogy written by Taylor Sheridan. Hell or High Water and Wind River are the other 2 films. Both are spectacular. El paso is a town in TX with a very large US Military base. The town borders Juarez, Mexico. I was stationed there. You can drive down the 10 highway and look right down into Juarez. Funnily enough I also know Ed Calderon. He does counter kidnapping and knife courses with my company in Dallas. (The Mexican cop on Joe Rogan you mentioned)

El paso is a city in Texas close to the Mexican border where Juarez is. It means the passageway in English. I've been there a few times,, interesting city.. And that scene when he had the water jug he was going to interrogate the guy with a torture method called waterboarding.
