Yes, I did as well, both times. The 1st one was in 1986 and the recert was 9 years later! Having been many years an ASME qualified/certified welder gave me a huge advantage!

What are ways to gain work experience? I do 3rd party inspection, but to do the weld inspections you have to be a CWI.

I did as well in 1986. Having been an ASME qualified welder made it easy. Nothing beats experience!!

can you perform a building structural steel inspections by only having ICC welding SI without having the CWI cert?

no one of the CWI at my work never was a welder, you just need 5 years in industry and be able to pass test.

It absolutely will help you understand the study material and test. No better experience toward becoming a CWI than having been a welder qualified to some recognized Code of Standard. Having been an experienced welder will be recognized by the welders whose work you’ll be inspecting and will tip the scales of respect a little more in your favor! Take this tip to the bank!
