Sick Boi by Ren | First Time Reaction

A great follow up to "Sick Boi" is "Chalk Outlines," the live version with Chinchilla ("live" in the sense that they're performing it live on camera, as Ren usually does with his one-take videos, not "live" as in they're in front of an audience; they're actually in a hallway). Whereas "Sick Boi" talks about his experiences with doctors misdiagnosing him and prescribing him meds he didn't need, "Chalk Outlines" is more about the feeling of regularly taking meds. BONUS: It's Ren singing rather than rapping, so you get a little more taste of that (since you mentioned you haven't had "too too much" of that yet). AND if you haven't heard Chinchilla (didn't notice any with her on your Ren-actions playlist), she's pretty spectacular as well. She and Ren have collab'd a number of times and it's always next level. Their connection when they sing together is special. They also do a song called "How To Be Me" together which is just gorgeous and unique and has imagery that, to me, is reminiscent of Edgar Allan Poe. That's another one I'd def recommend at some point in your journey down the rabbit hole.

Every live he does with Chinchilla is SO GOOD!!! They have exceptional musical chemistry. But both lives of Chalk Outlines and How To Be Me are by far my favourite.

I totally get what you mean about feeling emotion with this song right outta the gate. When I first heard "Sick Boi," I was fresh out of a super deep round of depression and anxiety -- the worst I'd ever experienced up to that point -- and was just starting my own journey with medication and doctors. During that time, I was running up against all the usual hurdles with trying to find the right doctor, waiting forever for appointments, conflicting diagnoses, ineffective meds, horrible side effects from the wrong meds, jaded doctors just trying to pile on anti-depressants to mask the symptoms rather than take the time to figure out and treat what was actually going on, etc. Not to mention the fact that most of my friends at the time were of the "Have you ever tried just not being sad?" persuasion, which left me feeling very alone in the process. So, yeah, Ren's experience as related in "Sick Boi" hit real close to home, even if his specifics were different (which is, ofc, the magic of Ren's writing; it's just specific enough that you know what he was thinking about when he wrote the song, but just general enough that you can project your own experiences onto it and relate to the feelings being communicated).

Doctors refusing to help with pain because "We can't find the cause" make me so mad. Seriously, if they could just experience the suffering themselves, they'd be handing out pain meds like candy. I noticed once Long COVID became a thing that doctors got themselves, and it destroyed their careers - they said to the other doctors "Hey guys, remember all those people we weren't sure about? - turns out they were telling the truth the whole time, this is real!" Response: "So sorry former colleague, are you sure you're not just anxious?" Grrrr! 😡

Yes, it is a good beat (although Ren added a lot of his magic to it). And too bad Kujo sold it without clearing the rights for the choir sample, tried to push that problem onto Ren, and then got greedy and wanted "all" the money. And took the song hostage and used as blackmail.

Don't feel bad for liking the beat, the beat is good and Kujo os a good producer. The problem with the beat was the choir sample, that's the part Kujo didn't have the right to sell. And yes despite being a good producer he's turn out to be pretty... Well... Let's not use those words. But nevertheless he is a talented producer, he's just going to have a very hard time coming back from this, and it's his own making. But the beat is sick!
