I'm a guitarist and have found your videos highly educational. I really enjoy the way you teach, just fast enough to not be boring but slow enough for a on old guitarist to easily assimilate. Keep up the good work, just subscribed.

Hi Jeff, could I recommend making a video about getting good time? I know you've already made one about using an app, but It would be cool to make one about how exactly to practice on 2 and 4 and etc with a metronome and where to place your notes (ahead, behind, on the beat).

great work as usual. Question about which Dim chord to substitute in. It looks like you're saying use a Bb dim over a Bb Dom 7th. I'd always heard that in terms of substitutions, a good fit was to play the dim that starts on the third of the Dom7th. ex. For Bb7th, play a D dim. Is this "use the same tonic" rule only applicable to this particular lick or would you suggest in general that it's okay in general to play the dim version of any dominant as an acceptable substitution.
@mjazzguitar
@mjazzguitar 6 жыл бұрын
There's really only three diminished chords, because once you go up a minor third, it's the same set of notes. The bass note determines the name. Any riff related to one note in the chord will work the same in relation to any other note in the chord, unless it's the diminished chord in a harmonic minor arrangement.

Hi (from Italy!) Jeff I've just discovered your channel! It is truly amazing and I'm wondering if you could make a playlist of your lessons for a classical musician who plays a generique monodic instrument (I play the clarinet) who want to learn to improvise. Thanks for your work!

Hi Jeff. Thanks for this excellent video. May I ask a question, which I imagine may be puzzling several of your thousands of fans? If we are trying to improvise over a 251 minor (say, in "Softly as a Morning Sunrise") what are the best choices? The chord sequence for alto runs Bdim7/E7b9/Amin7. Your lovely idea would use the A diminished scale over the I minor chord: could it also be used across the 2 and 5? Maybe we should use the B dim scale and E dim scale over 2 and 5? Otherwise, could you use your idea and choose from the melodic minor (MM) scales, starting from the arpeggio tones? This would mean using D MM over Bdim7, F MM over E7b9, and A MM over A min7. A third option (which doesn't seem right) would be to use the AMM over the 251. Your video is wonderful for playing over a dim or dom chord, but your advice on using it across 251's would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I mean, strictly speaking the Bb diminished 7th and the G diminished 7th are the same thing aren't they? So being a minor 3rd out because of playing in Eb doesn't really make a difference 😉

Hey John, not sure what you mean here. Can you rephrase?
@johnny141093

Nothing serious! Just the fact that in concert key, the Bb dim 7th (Bb Db E G) is equivalent to the G dim 7th as transposed on the alto (G Bb Db E). I'm just being musically silly. The arpeggio is the same, that's all! Nice lick though, gonna try it out myself!
@RhyseeB

John Pearlman: Yes the Bb Dim and the G dim have the same notes in their chord make-up (Bb, Db, E, G). The only difference is where you start.

So I have been playing alto for a good 4-5 years. Currently in middle school going to be in the high school jazz band next year. I've been wanting to get a new mouth piece specifically for Jazz just to kinda give myself an extra jazzy feel during that. Nonetheless, I still need a new mouthpiece regardless. Any suggestions on what I should get?
@ethanauringer8304
@ethanauringer8304 7 жыл бұрын
Carter Michaud good jazz mouthpieces are always expensive. I would get a Vandoren V16 or Otto Link 8 Super Tone Master. You may need to switch to a softer reed to play when you switch mouthpieces though.

Hi Jeff, I love the lick and all of your videos. I'm a guitar player and have been on gigs where somebody played a Bb dim arpeggio over a Bb 7 chord, almost nothing sounds worse. But a B nat dim arpeggio sounds great. It is more inside, but gives you b9, 3, 5, b7. I think your lick dropping two half steps accomplishes the same thing. Starts out dissonant and resolves to a chord tone. Same thing just different reasoning. Thanks for posting. Translates to guitar very well.

Sam Keehn use whatever you sound best on, people think that as you get better, you go to harder reeds. This is false, just play on what gives you the best sound.

I really enjoy the techniques you use and teach but i find myself struggling to follow you when you speak about the progressions. It would help if you could also show your fingers when playing examples of certain rhythms and riffs per say.
