Great video! I have some small quibbles. Roll equal or less for success. Spells always cost at least one, even with high skill cost reduction. Reduce cost at skill 15, 20, etc. “Um, actuallies” aside, I’m so glad to see this video!

11:50 Link does not necessarily have to connect two spells. The Linked spell is cast when a certain condition occurs but that does not have to be anything special. A Voices spell could be Linked to say a phrase when a humanoid approaches the area (ie. Magic Mouth). But it would trigger whether the person was a human, orc, skeleton, werewolf, or illusion of a human as it is only going off of visual identification of a humanoid. To keep it from triggering another information spell would then be Linked to it such as Detect Life. This would allow it to accurately determine the race and could even cause it to detect the unseen. So while two spells could be Linked, they don't have to be. The Link spell simply connects a spell with a predetermined event.

7:27 Clarification/correction: Casting a spell on someone else out of touch range does not cost extra fatigue. Instead, it causes a skill penalty (usually -1/yard depending). By the rules it is unclear if this penalty can cause your effective skill level to drop enough where you no longer get the cost reduction for high skill, but that is a possibility. Also some spells simply cannot be cast on others and it is stated as such in the description. No matter the skill penalty or fatigue used it will not work that way. Most of these will have another spell with an "Other" in the title which will allow that usage. Blink is caster only, whereas Blink Other can be used on someone else at a distance skill penalty.

I played once a GURPS mages ages ago and I still consider this the "best" magic user I ever played 👍

I have similar memories of 3 GURPS wizards I've played in the past 4 years. All but one were low level but still managed to save the entire party with creative uses of utility spells, darn near killing the wizard in the process due to burning HP to power the spells but it was amazing and memorable. The one high level mage I had became a game changer in every encounter being able to keep comrades alive due to crowd-control type magic when they had little chance of survival. So fun and useful to play but still not over-powered that he over shadowed the others. He still was always one hit away from instant death and very limited in his spell slinging longevity compared to the fighter who could spam "Rapid Strike" all day long. I found this surprising as I expeceted an equally leveled Mage would far out-perform a fighter but was quite impressed to see he was not.

GURPS is a treasure trove! I've only played DFRPG so far (and having a blast) but I recently acquired the basic set and love them.

I wrote a wizard for an adventuring party for a series of con games that had zero attack spells--mostly utility, one defensive spell. To stretch the players. Worked, I had no complaints about spell choices.

I've been around rpg's a long time, but I've never paid much attention to GURPS. Based on this magic system, tho, I'm going to have a deeper look.

Funny. When you started talking about "No Smell" I was just in the process of washing my arm pits quick. I wish I had that spell... Very underestimated.

Biggest difference between gurps magic and many other systems is that the effects are generally small but are also extremely quick. The Fireball example allows the caster to create the effect in their hand in only 1 second and then attack with it in the following second. However this only does 1d6 damage to one target. While most humans have only 10-11 hit points that effect can be devastating. Shooting one off every other turn can cause it to miss since you aren't aiming. Plus any humans encountered beyond peasants will be wearing armor that resists the damage. There are of course other problems with this including accidentally dropping the fireball on yourself if you are interrupted. But generally spells are considered to be as powerful and as easy to use as a strength based weapon in terms of speed and overall effect. But they do tire the caster out quickly and many can be increased in effectiveness for increased cost. None of which meets the carnage of even the lowest 3d6 Fireball 20ft radius from D&D even if it can be used repeatedly all day.

What you say is true if the caster has only one level of Magery. I’ve never seen a PC with less than 3 levels. In one second, you can spend fatigue equal to your Magery level for a die of damage each, typically, for missile spells like Fireball. So a GURPS Mage can definitely toss a 3d6 fireball every other second. If the character neglected to get his Innate Attack at an adequate level to avoid missing, well… the player made a mistake, and the GM should have helped them see it in character generation, unless the concept is lots of power and no finesse.

Very nice video. Are you familiar with Dungeon Fantasy? How does it compare to regular GURPS? Warm regards, Rick.
@easygurps3 сағат бұрын
Thank you! I have played dungeon fantasy on a couple occasions and it is pretty much exactly the same from a players perspective at least. I have heard there are minor optional rule differences etc. But that is normal for all GURPS games. I do not actually own "Dungeon Fantasy RPG". Thanks for watching.

Nice vídeo. Magic's the "achilles heel" of GURPS system, IMHO. It's to slow and complicated to be an effective mage in GURPS. Most GMs end up using alternative systems, or simplifying it. I used to change some aspects of it, like turning "cast time" instantaneous. I think the "gun magazine" D&D Magic scheme, where you just "load up" the magics you want to use, like loading bullets in a gun clip, is frankly more fun. In GURPS there's a lot more stuff involved when casting a "simple" fireball. I even think the super skills from GURPS Supers are easier and more fun to use.
