Hey! Just wanted to clarify that I’m not getting paid to promote this devise; I just think it’s a great option. I also know it might not be perfect for every use, but I’m sharing my experience because it’s worked really well for what I need. Hope the video helps! I probably forgot to mention some details, so feel free to ask any questions!

Recording of the RCA ports, and bypassing the tape, yields fantastic results. The cameras have to leave out a LOT of color and luma fidelity to fit its signal onto tiny 8mm and vhs-c tape. So going straight from the ports means you’re gonna have a great time!

You're absolutely right! Bypassing the tape and capturing directly from the RCA ports makes a world of difference. The cameras had to compromise on color and luma fidelity to fit the signal onto those smaller 8mm and VHS-C tapes, so when you capture straight from the ports, you really get to see the full potential of these vintage cameras. It’s a great way to preserve that extra detail and quality. Thanks for your input!

I actually did this as an experiment on my old Windows 98 desk top PC in the early 2000's. I had a TV card installed and it also had RCA inputs if you wanted to plug in a camcorder to record off tapes. One day I ditched the tape and turned on the camcorder. Only had about 4 feet if cable. So I could only film my living room and out the window. But the quality was amazing compared to the tape

Very nice. I have done something similar with a series of Camcorders like the JVC GR-C1. A tried a load of DVRs, including this one as I recall. But I think the main issue was the sound on that DVR. The one I had was on 8mhz mono. Can you tell me what yours is, as I'd be interested in trying it again if that's been improved. At present I'm using the ImmersionRC Powerplay as my DVR of choice since it offers good quality images AND deinterlaces to 50 fps. But they are very rare these days and I don't think they still make them (AliExpress does have some). One of the key elements to my project was that I wanted to be able to trigger the DVR recording from the camcorder's record button. This involved a small mod on the camera and the DVR and use of an Arduino, but it works great, If you'd be interested in hearing more about this please let me know.

Another option is to use an AV to HDMI converter and an HDMI USB capture card with your phone. You can adjust the capture resolution on the app to record in 4:3 directly (the max 4:3 resolution depends on your capture card), and the converter deiterlaces and upscales the footage automatically before being captured. It's similar to the technique Technology Connections uses for digitizing tapes. If you want better quality, you can even get converters that can capture S-Video, if your camera has that option availabe. The main issue with the Mini DVR/DigitNow and similar devices is that they only capture half of the fields, sometimes even duplicating frames, which makes footage look choppy. It's fine for recording flying drones (which is their actual purpose), by abysmal for videgraphy. Also the audio recording on those is HORRID. You want something that captures both fields, and deinterlaces the footage, and the cheapest option to achieve that, in my experience, is the one I sugested.
@MaxVegaKun
@MaxVegaKun 17 күн бұрын
You're absolutely right-I think it’s a great option for those looking for a different set up. The only thing that holds me back from going that route is that I really need something very small and portable, and adding more converters along with my phone isn’t convenient for my setup. Plus, depending on the brand, it can get quite expensive, haha. For the use I give it, the quality is more than sufficient, but I think it’s great that there are more options out there! As for the DigitNow and similar capture devices I’ve tried from Amazon, I’ve tested two different ones, and they were awful-I had to return them the same day. I totally agree with you; not only were the colors and contrast off, but the framerate was the worst part. I’m happy to report that with this mini DVR, I haven’t experienced those issues. The video, at least to my eyes, is pretty smooth. The audio isn’t great, but as I mentioned in the review, it’s not as important for me since I use it mainly for music video clips. Thanks so much for your insight and for sharing these alternatives!

@MaxVegaKun
@MaxVegaKun 6 күн бұрын
Thanks for bringing that up! Yeah, unfortunately, the mini DVR has a pretty low sample rate, which affects the audio quality. Another issue is that the audio input is designed for microphones, not line-level signals, so the sound can come through too strong and end up clipping. The good news is that you can fix this a bit by using an attenuator cable or adding a resistor to the audio input. It does help, but I’ll be honest-it’s not a perfect fix. Still, it’s worth trying! I hope that helps a bit, and I appreciate you sharing your experience!

I tried to fix the audio by adding 500ohm resistor to the audio signal and it yield better audio quality (the default gain is too high so the audio keeps clipping) you have to try that!
@MaxVegaKun
@MaxVegaKun 15 күн бұрын
That’s great to hear it worked for you! I tried using a signal attenuator cable connected to an external microphone, and to be honest, I didn’t see much improvement. The signal volume was lower and didn’t clip, but in my case, the overall quality didn’t change much. I tested with several microphones, and it was the same result each time. I think the issue might be inherent to the device because when I checked the audio properties, I noticed the sample rate is only 8000kHz, which is well below the standard 44,100kHz. But it’s definitely worth trying again, thank you so much for the suggestion!

Is it possible it was originally intended for a mic-level signal rather than line level?
@MaxVegaKun
@MaxVegaKun 8 күн бұрын
@@pokepress Yes, that’s definitely possible, especially since it was originally designed for use with FPV drones. Another issue is the low sampling quality, so even if you attenuate the input signal, the final audio quality doesn’t improve much, unfortunately. :( Thanks for your question!

You can't solder a digital port onto an analog signal. MCE QuickStream regularly goes for 60ish dollars on ebay and takes an HDD or SSD which would be better than the 32gb maximum shown in the cheap adapter in the video. Firestore DS4 goes for about $150. If you're looking at Sony in particular, they already sold hard drive recorders for the DV/Firewire on specific cameras. Def read the documentation of your camera, because what you want likely already exists.
@MaxVegaKun
@MaxVegaKun 17 күн бұрын
Unfortunately, there's no way to do that because MiniDV cameras output via firewire port is a digital signal, while the input on these recorders is analog. There are specific devices designed for portable recording from MiniDV cameras, but they’ve been discontinued and are only available second-hand at very high prices. At least in my experience, the ones I’ve seen are quite expensive, and since they’re used, they often don’t have much life left. Additionally, the options I’ve come across usually require a specific battery, which can also be costly plus they're usually bulky. I’ve never had one in my hands, but from the videos I’ve seen where friends capture MiniDV tapes directly via FireWire (which offers the same quality as the capturers I mentioned above), the difference in video quality compared to what I get with the mini DVR is minimal-at least to my eyes. The big difference is in the audio; while I love the video quality the mini DVR provides, the audio is pretty bad in comparison. However, it really depends on what you’re using it for. In my case, since I’m making music videos, it’s more than sufficient because I end up removing the audio anyway-I just use it as a reference to sync the song. I wish I could offer a better solution, but I can only recommend looking into portable MiniDV recorders. Thanks for your comment, and I hope this helps a bit!

As for the cable, it’s actually not too complicated. I’m currently working on a video review of a Zenith VHS camera that uses the same type of connector. I didn’t want to modify it because it’s in pristine condition, so in that video, I’ll show how to make the cable and how to rebuild the batteries, which are the same ones used in the GR-C1. Great idea! I’ve thought about buying the ImmersionRC PowerPlay FPV, but I haven’t found it at a good price yet. I’ve been looking at the specs on their website, and on paper, it looks pretty impressive, especially since it records at 60fps and has a built-in screen. For me, 60fps isn’t that important, but I can see the advantages. However, one area where I think the mini DVR wins is the bitrate-PowerPlay’s max bitrate is 15mbps, compared to the 28mbps on the mini DVR. So, it would definitely be an interesting comparison, although I’m not sure how fair it would be since the PowerPlay, including batteries, is around $160, while the mini DVR is only $20. But it’s definitely something to think about-thanks so much for the suggestion

@MaxVegaKun
@MaxVegaKun 17 күн бұрын
Thanks for the question! Regarding the audio quality, I eventually came to accept that it’s just how it was designed from the factory. The audio bitrate is 128kbps, which isn’t terrible, but the sample rate is only 8,000kHz compared to the 44,100kHz you’d get from an average smartphone video. I tried wiring different microphones, but there wasn’t much improvement, so unfortunately, it seems to be a design issue. I believe it’s tied to the device’s primary intended use-FPV drones :(

Thank you! I’m glad you liked the video. Yes, it’s definitely possible with the right adapter cable. It’s not too complicated to make, but you do need to know a bit about soldering. In fact, I’m currently working on a tutorial showing how to do it. The video quality is really good, but the audio isn’t great. It doesn’t desynchronize, but the quality is pretty low-kind of like an old radio. So while it could work perfectly for video, I wouldn’t recommend it if you want to preserve the original audio. I’d suggest using this device more for recording directly from the camera to a micro SD if you don’t mind the audio. For example, I use it for making music videos, where the captured audio is just a guide, and I replace it with a song during editing.

@MaxVegaKun

To be honest, I don’t have a FireWire capture card to test the exact same video recording, but I’ve seen recordings from a friend who uses an old laptop with that port. In my view, the quality is very similar between the two. There are differences, but I wouldn’t say one is better than the other-it’s more about variations in color and saturation. Regarding the frame rate, the mini DVR unfortunately only supports up to 30 fps. Personally, I don’t notice a significant difference between 30 and 60 fps, unless you’re doing slow-motion work, where 60 fps might have an edge. But outside of that, 30 fps works just fine for me. It really depends on how you plan to use the footage. Just keep in mind, this is the opinion of a hobbyist, not an expert! 😊

Great observation! You’re absolutely right-visually, it’s identical to the Zenith VM7150. However, nowhere on the camera does it specify that it’s S-VHS, unlike the JVC model. I looked through the manual to see if there was any reference to S-VHS compatibility, but unfortunately, I couldn’t find anything. From the recordings I’ve made with this camera, it’s clear that it’s standard VHS quality, which I found a bit strange because I have a Zenith VM6200 and a JVC GR-C7, and those are indeed identical both in functions and appearance. This makes me think the Zenith VM7150 is the more budget-friendly version of the JVC GF-S550

@MaxVegaKun
@MaxVegaKun 7 күн бұрын
Sure! The audio quality on the mini DVR is not the best because it has a low sampling rate-only 8000Hz compared to the standard 44,100Hz that most devices use. This leads to audio that sounds muffled and lacks clarity. Additionally, it often clips or distorts, especially with louder sounds. The signal clips because the input was designed for a microphone, not for line-level input. For my projects, I mainly focus on video and replace the audio later, so it hasn’t been a big issue for me, but if you’re looking for high-quality sound, it might be disappointing. Thank you for your question!

With the mini DVR, it might not capture 100% of that VHS aesthetic, but for me and the way I use it, it’s more than enough. I think it strikes a good balance between convenience and results. It’s totally impractical for me to shoot a music video using tape, or even worse, lug around an external VHS recorder with an older camera. So the results I get with the mini DVR, at least to my eyes, are way better than just applying a filter in post-production

Just use firewire, it cuts out the step of dumping the card onto the computer.
@MaxVegaKun
@MaxVegaKun 17 күн бұрын
Thank you so much for your comment, I really appreciate your input! I just wanted to clarify a bit about using FireWire with MiniDV cameras. FireWire doesn’t simply transfer files from the camera to the computer; it actually captures the video signal in real time from the MiniDV tape, preserving the original quality without additional compression. This means that the process of capturing still needs to be done, so it doesn’t really cut out any steps. Another challenge with using FireWire is that the port is no longer common on most modern computers, and finding a compatible capture card can be a bit tricky. Additionally, FireWire only works with MiniDV cameras that have this port, so it’s not compatible with VHS, VHSC, Hi8, or other formats. Using FireWire also eliminates the possibility of going tapeless, unless you invest in one of those portable MiniDV recorders from Sony, which are now quite expensive. However, if you do have a FireWire card, a MiniDV camera, the necessary cables, and you don’t need to go tapeless, it’s definitely a great option! Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts it’s great to talk about these things!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I totally get it-nothing quite beats a FireWire port for capturing digital video from MiniDV cameras. There are portable devices that can capture the digital signal without any loss in quality, just like on a computer with a FireWire port. You can find them second-hand on eBay, but they are quite a bit more expensive. I think this device is more suitable for older cameras that only have an analog signal output. To be honest, to my eyes, there’s not a huge difference between MiniDV captured via FireWire and this device, or at least not enough to justify the higher cost of those specialized devices. I suppose it really depends on what you plan to do with the footage

does this thing record full 60i or just skip fields? thats the only thing stopping me from buying one
@MaxVegaKun
@MaxVegaKun 17 күн бұрын
To be honest, I don’t fully understand the topic, but this is what I believe: The mini DVR records at 30fps progressive (30p), which means it captures 30 full frames per second without interlacing. When it comes to 60i, that refers to 60 interlaced fields per second, which effectively gives you 30 frames per second with smoother motion due to the interlacing. Unfortunately, the mini DVR doesn’t support true 60i recording, so if capturing in 60i is important for your project, this might be a limitation. For my eyes, the result from the mini DVR is pretty smooth, so I think it’s sufficient for most uses, but again, this is just my opinion so take it with a grain of salt hehe :)
