Gogo Ekhaya Esima is not only a Mental Health Recovery Specialist, but a traditional South African healer (Sangoma), as well. Her own experience with mental illness, and her at times frightening, at times profoundly beautiful journey through it eventually led her deeply into traditional African spirituality. This gives her the unique perspective she shares. Through this expanded view, symptoms of mental illness are seen from the wider context in which they have long been perceived by many indigenous cultures. They are re-framed as evidence of a solvable problem or an indication of an individual’s gifts, instead of the sentence of a more permanent diagnosis. Gogo Ekhaya Esima explains how Sangomas determine whether a person with "psychosis" is experiencing a shamanic calling, bothersome spirits, or an ancestral dilemma, as well as what types of ceremonies, rituals, and medicine are prescribed for healing in each case. She addresses the importance of ancestors, a supportive community, and other integral aspects of traditional African life and specifically the healing process, as well as how this can be applied to work in mental health in the U.S.

I have schizophrenia and I have been managing my symptoms with Buddhism and shamanism. All positivity. I can't let negativity into my life because I feel it on such a big level. I feel one with the universe and when I add negativity to the universe I add negativity to myself and all of creation. I still hallucinate but I know how to manage the paranoia.

I have had a few friends who were schizophrenic and they were gifted on the spirit realm. I truly felt most if not all they experienced were all supernatural things being heard seen or felt but was diagnosed as a mental illness due to the misunderstanding of it and the lack of spiritual knowledge in society. I’m so happy to hear that your managing through spiritual practices and have taken control of this in a positive and powerful way. Much love and blessings to you on your journey dear friend!

They call it schizophrenia, but it's really your ancestors plus God & the Devil. Don't be afraid, accept that you are in this world with a purpose. Accept your gift. The government is just making billions from these corporations while wanting to hide the truth. Alot of us have taken to be wool off our eyes & found truth. Peace & love.

I have bipolar type 1, psychosis, split personalities, bpd, and anxiety, depression, ptsd. I take about 8 pills a day. My whole life since about 4 I’ve experienced a lot of supernatural, paranormal, ontop of trauma. It’s rough for me. I’ve been through a lot from multiple therapist and psychiatrist and almost being hospitalized multiple times. I’ve had multiple spiritual awakenings since I was 13 or 14 and I’ve experienced possession. I had a download that I have multiple gifts and my most strongest one is being able to see people soul, talking to spirits and having them commmunicate with me. Astral projection. Im very empathic and healing among other things. I am blessed to have came across this video. I dissociate a lot and that’s when I get my downloads. I see spirits by energy and not my face the way I used to as a child. Water is the only thing that grounds and heals me. Also plants and pets. I never felt understood. Until I realize im a generational curse breaker and I embraced the parts of myself that was constantly battling within me. I astral project almost every night. I can’t sleep at night unless im with my partner or take my medication due to intense psychosis or as I feel communication with spirits and they seem to need help but I don’t necessarily know how to help them. I’ve had dreams of me traveling and helping people with their deceased relatives talk to them and so on. In my dream I would literally feel the spirit enter my body and I had no control. Im deeply drawn to birds when im outside or trees because I feel I can sense my ancestors through this. It’s alot. I know nobody will probably read or respond to this. I just wanted to finally in a sense come to terms with who I am and my gifts along with battling the curses im breaking. Peace, love, and peace. Asé

Whatever your going through, hang in there. It’s a hard & tough path to follow and for some the pain and isolation from society leaves them feeling they have no place to fit in within this harsh world. I hope everything becomes much easier for you in time. From your comment I can tell you have some understanding of what is happening and going through. I send nothing but love and light your way.

@@jasminethomas6714 yes I take olazapine. And it made me feel detached and I didn’t feel my emotions. I was literally like a blank piece of paper. Once I slowed down on taking them everything I was suppressing came to the surface. Painful but I accepted and slowly started to heal and accept myself and over time it got easier. Because the medication alters your brain and becomes addictive even tho they say they aren’t, you become codependent and feel as if you can’t function without them. Gives you false hope and happiness that vanish if you don’t take them. It’s a lot lol

Colonization really had an impact on us as Africans and continue to impact our daily lives. In the mental institutions they recommend Buddhist and their traditions. However, us as Africans our traditions and cultures continue to be frowned upon. We as Africans need to beware of who we are and acknowledge the power we possess. Thokoza Gogo and continue teaching our ways... Show off with your gift.

Very right. Our entire cultural and beliefs have been demonized, and cut off. Instead, all have been replaced by the western thought, spirituality and beliefs. How can the original people not have anything of value? I have awoken and so are many of African origins. We now know that so much of what we have been fed are absolutely lies and make belief. My question is always the same. How can a people whose intentions have been to destroy you come back after the fact to try to save you?

Message from Kawku Anansi. The Loa are stirring. Sounds like our children are awakening, soon their eyes will be open. Their curiosity for knowledge of who they really are is growing like hungry bellies do. Awake children and be filled with the knowing of whereabouts you come, for the journey is not for the faint of heart. Awake my children. Break the fast of your slumber, grow full of truth and wisdom. Discard the blanketed bed you were lied in for so long. Cleanse your heart and mind of those Benevolent Individuals Blindfolding you Lowly Exalted children of Spirit. Good'mourning children, but it's a new day, and we rise like the Phoenix from the destruction to fly with mother Kite and father Falcon.

Thokoza gogo... Im happy that our traditional African knowledge andd spiritual healing systems are finally being taken out of the darkness, and vilification by colonialism and religion... My main issue is that even here in South Africa many black African people are still stereotyped and often discredit or redicule these gifts... They only seem to accept its authenticity if its been "approved" or accepted by white western doctors/people, or even international videos like yours... Its sad because this knowledge should be confirmed /cemented by us, but at least I'm very glad and happy that a sister like you is one whos delivering our people from their sleep/imprisonment /collective forgetful... Love you Makhosi.

The journey is to become bare. No tool, instrument or concept that separates the individual souls from the cosmic soul. For now, we use the music, the medicine, and the stories to connect and unravel us, but soon we will stand bare. In our nakedness, sufficiency will be the standard

Ok… Sooo… I sometimes have very vivid dreams. I even wake up with bruises!!! I use to dream of snakes a lot. Once I got away from my ex husband, those dreams stopped. The older people always call me the girl who see things. I would zone out into another place, have visions, speak what’s going to happen or has happened that I shouldn’t know about then snap out of it. This is soooo overwhelming. Diagnosed with Bipolar, PTSD, MMD, GAD & Neurocognitive disorder. Medicated. Hospitalized about 4 times. I feel people & their moods. People often walk up to me & start telling me of what they’re going through, ask if I can pray with/for them, etc. I no longer hug nor shake hands. I now understand that I can also feel. At times it’s just too much. I wake up between 3am-4am a lot. I’ve learned to pray at those times. When dreaming of death someone close dies. Dreaming of a baby, somone close is pregnant. I dreamed of how my granddaughter would look while my daughter was pregnant. She looks ACTUALLY like I dreamed down to dimple, hair texture, skin tone, etc. I can feel when someone is looking at me. When I’m at my highest anxiety space, something happens or bad news comes. I am truly tired… I feel the energy of someone near me but there’s no one there. I was taking a nap one day. It’s like I was thrown to the floor! Seconds later I received a call from my son’s school’s nurse. He’d fainted!!!!! My mind was blown!!!! My aunt is always telling me how God blessed me with gifts. Why don’t they feel like gifts? 😢 I have story after story…

I had a psychosis last year on vacation in puerto rico with my step father ( who raised me), we went because we both were stoked to attend a salsa festival. When I was deep into the psychosis, I wanted to do nothing but find my teacher. Which I believed to be in the forest. But I also had a deep calling to near the ocean, its where I felt calm. I remember dancing on the bed with my aunt, I remember most of it, which is crazy because I was so out of it. Prior to all of this, I have always been intrigued by Peruvian shamanism, and of course ayahuasca and other psychedelic ceremonies. I stumbled upon a shamanic group here near by, and paid a shit ton of money. My psychosis happened shortly after that, and my family swore that that was the cause of it. So I cut off all that felt true to me. I cut off my connection to animal symbolisms and dreams and what not. But it has made its way back to me.

Franchesca Sanchez Is it like Euphoric? I thought I was having psychosis and then I read it in positive way. What do you do to calm your state of mind and how long does each phase last. You are gifted and I’ve found out the hard way that I can’t avoid it. It seems to get better each time as I get use to it and saying "I’m meant to do this and this state will pass.” What you’re experiencing could be different than what I have been going through. Just feel for you because it is significant and a lot to have to handle. Also what helps me is my Tibetan song bowl, journaling, and feeling Earth under my bare feet. Water intensifies the sensations and end up with full blown visions and instant overload of emotions. I loved baths and now I get weary about having to experience another message like that.

Hello, I am peruvian and happen to know about the ayahuasca ceremony. Here and in other countries it tends to be practices wrong. The shaman is the only one that is supposed to drink the ayahuasca and then sign healing songs. Many psyhotic outbreaks have taken place after a ceremony in which the patient drinks the beverage. If your shaman did not help you and kept you safe for 12 days after the ceremony then you were vulnerable and the outbreak was bound to happen. Be careful, not all people who call themselves shamans are, I actually only know one shaman and one healer but many charlatans. Hope you are ok now. The symbolic world is a double edged sword.

@@paolacastillootoya8904 thank you for sharing this. I went to an Ayahuasca retreat last year and I drank the brew. The retreat was only two evenings of taking the medicine, it was a weekend event. Just 7 days after drinking the Ayahuasca I was mentally hospitalized and then was readmitted two more times after. At first the docs said I was schizophrenic but an in-depth brain scan at the Dr. Amen clinic revealed I not… I’ve been trying to piece together what all this means. One explanation that I’ve been given is that my body/brain has a chemical imbalance and that’s why mother Aya resulted in 3 trips to the hospital. I felt like I was on a path of spiritual awakening before I took the plant medicine and the Aya sped up everything. I didn’t even realize that Aya is supposed to be taken by the shaman only and we definitely weren’t looked over for 12 days after the process. We were released back into society and told to Zoom the facility for “integration” meetings

Thokoza gogo. The Xhosa ancestral spirit called Camagu. I have a friend who is going through those sicknesses suicide, epilepsy, anxiety but she isn't and have to go for initiation. She is South Africa mix of different tribes but because she grew from a family whom their grandparents decided to to ignore and believe there is no search-calling. Thanks to my Thongo and spiritual messages I managed to appease her ancestors to calm down. Coz we had breakfast then after couple of hours. She spoke the language we couldn't understand and then went out and start shaking like she was experiencing epilepsy. The paramedics took her to hospital and the unconscious. Thanks to Mvelinqangi who uses me to make a difference through ukuphahla. I never knew I had this powers. Dlozi be using people so that I start practice while am healing. Thanks Gogo. This wants to give me anxiety. I've nearly died. 😭 Got admitted into hospitals 17 times in the space of two years. Bcoz conventional doctors could not diagnose my spiritual calling. 😮🥺 My parents were so academic they never introduced me to anything that could have helped me understand myself in this aspect. I've experienced immeasurable suffering😭. I want to cry. Was on all sorts of medication for two years, no improvement. Until I happened to know that I'm supposed to be a sangoma. Now I'm healed and I heal others .

@@elenaa5933 I have a case worker because I switched clinics after 15 years with a very heavily religious based anti autistic / anti open-minded clinic. @@elenaa5933 I actually have youtube videos on some of the stuff I've dealt with. One of them talks about a UFO experience I had. 2 of them are about the church kicking me out repeatedly then later having Santa Muerte experiences. She is very controversial. Other experiences deal with that I had to push aside that I could see and hear spirit since I was a child. I quit pushing to that to the side and I also quit drinking 6 years ago. My spiritual senses became strong again. I recently had to get 3 tombstones for a family that had been murdered 12 years ago... because every time I went to visit my friend in the cemetery, this lady/ghost was really depressed and crying and started begging me to help her. It had been 12 years and they still didn't have tombstones. So I got the tombstones and put them out really nice and the energy shifted very much. I haven't seen her since

I spent some time in a hospital and it almost killed me. This is a state of spiritual emergency! How do they not know! It’s hard and I’m on the cusp of something. I wear a muti pouch that I made and crystals they really just ground me. But the shadow self is loud and the ancestors are calling. What should I do?

Oh fun, something inside me said, "Oh finally, I can go home" and my body got chills at 25ish when she mentioned drumming. I've always been attracted to drums and African culture. Out of all of the different spiritual modalities I've researched, African stuff has always felt more like home to me. Drumming in a drum circle one winter saved my life(well, that and climbing a tree. :-) Other spiritual stuff AND music is fascinating to me but, it never really feels like home. Well, Native American stuff comes close but; not quite. I guess I need to do more research. I feel so afraid of cultural appropriation though. It's really one of the reasons I've never followed through with research, or finding a teacher etc. I am after all, a pasty pinkyish white guy. But, we are all from Africa so, I guess it would make sense that part of me (or a spirit ancestor in me) would want to go to Africa and be part of that culture. Also, I'm pretty darn sure I hear voices pretty often and see things. They both tend to happen when I'm falling asleep or waking up but; I've been meditating etc a lot more lately and sometimes I hear people talking that are 100% not my internal voice and not physically near me to be heard. Happily, those voices have never been overly forceful, name calling happens and some aggression but; I've never done major harm to myself or others. Lately, I've been able to have conversations with those spirits (or as a western counselor once suggested I call them, "aspects of myself") and we all seem to be much more respectful of each other. I think a huge part of that respect has came from me just starting to actually sit and listen AND watch what they show me etc etc. Also, let them take over my body now and then. -----I have this fascination with wanting to be able to take this body into environments that are typically harsh for humans, like even space without a technological space suit. I've been pondering the problem for a few years and not getting anywhere. Then well, long story short; I was extremely activated, had been crying in joy at discovery and also frustration that I didn't know this thing before etc. I decided to meditate and the idea of going into space without a suit popped into my head and what it would do to our eyes. Well, a voice inside me laughed lovingly and was like, "I make work! I build for you!. :-)" I felt a weird sensation in my LEFT eye and I decided to give whatever that voice permission to build whatever it was talking about in my eye. My mediation moved on, I forgot about that voice and my meditation finished awhile later. When I came out of it, I realized that I had SOMETHING in my left eye, and NOT in my right eye. I could still see out of my left eye though, almost totally clearly. I went to look in the mirror and I think I saw a faint difference in how the light reflected off my eye. ---The voice/spirit/aspect of myself had built a lens on top of my eyeball out of my tears that clearly would be able to withstand lower pressure environments. Possibly higher as well but idk. --The voices I hear frequently don't speak fluent English. They leave out adjectives. I also have a tendency of speaking in what seems like it could be other languages that I don't know when I'm alone. But, I've always felt that that was just me mangling other languages that I've heard snippets of. But, who knows. I've also had some other weird body experiences. I'm pretty sure I've been able to heal very small wounds within minutes. I think I also was able to avoid getting cut by some cut grass (the stuff is like razor blades) by willing it to be so. The thing that gets me though is that, all these super powerful experiences BOTH with my body AND my mind happen much more often and stronger when I'm stoned on weed. I DON'T want to be high to be able to do this stuff OR more importantly to help others. I want to just be able to drop into the state when it's needed. Or better yet, be walking and functional in both worlds most of the time.

I would like to say that Soirituality is not African ,European, Asian or otherwise. It is who we are as humans. It gets confusing when people says it belongs to the one and not the other. In the spiritual realms the is no separation or difference in skin colour. We incarnate here choosing our skin colour based on the life lessons our souls have chosen to go through at the time. And spirit is free to choose any direction in any culture. Source is one for all. It is good to share what we know and to gain confidence to teach what we know. It is for all and it is beautiful. All is connected all is ONE. And for us all. Unity is the language of the spirit. Not separation. Thank you. Thokoza, Namaste.

Van you visit Jamaica PLEASE. I have these same experiences but they treat it very differently in the western world. I hear in the spirit see smell and can taste. I touch buildings and can tell of what took place there.. We need to have these messages in the systems here I see alot of people going thru the same things but aren't getting the true help they need because it is stigmatized. They force injections on us which only suppress the traumas that our ancestors are trying to get us to release. We need to bring awareness to how trauma is past on thru the generational bloodline and how it is the guidance of our Ancestors way of communicating with us so we can heal. The younger questioner's mocking statement using intellectual language, to the older man (at 1:15:00) and the audiences laughter- is a sad example of society today. An example of how Spirituality has been mocked, because its not understood by the fragmented and colonial "medical system". And of how medical language has been used to oppress, and then embarass or mock the oppressed. Yet, look at the high suicide rates and mental illness crisis. I was saddened to witness this.
