But is there an automatic way to convert audio kicks to midi notes and have them perfectly aligned right off the bat? I usually have to go manually over each hit and double check.

Yes, the same dynamic split feature can be used. A few months earlier there was even a video here on that with Josh Schroeder.

Yes, you have to get the transient detection settings right, and the open/close settings right on the built in trigger plugin.

What you do is normalizing the track based on the loudest hit leaving the other ones not normalized to 0db

yeah i think he missed the point. all hits must be normalized independently of each other, cubase can normalize everything but it will be a average of the whole event, anyways, in cubase we can 'split at hitpoints' and then normalize, 2 easy clicks
