Even tho the customer wasn't looking for maximum performance, this classic MOPAR 440 Six Pack had plenty of issues that needed to be taken care of on Nick's dynamometer. Let's watch Dr. Nick as he puts this old engine though the paces.

R+D in the corporate world normally means research and development. When it comes to modified muscle at Nick’s Garage; R+D means rumble and dance. I’ve seen numerous 440’s get the crap beat out of them years ago but it’s still amazing to see their resilience.

I noticed what I thought was fuel dripping from center carb right after the "cleaning" was done, and it still looked like it was dribbling some fuel after that last run. With that overhead camera shot and a bunch of people looking at it i am surprised nobody noticed. Like those HP number, and the torque was great. Good job.

Dang Nick... I am mostly content being an old fart, I can still fish a bit and get around a bit.. But when I put on your videos.. well ... I just want to be young again.. back to building my hot rods and my racing cars.. excitement and life all around.. I should stop watching these videos.. But I just can't help myself.. I still love it.. I mean, I still fall asleep building engines and drive trains in my mind.. Building cars from the ground up.. what fun that was.. I still have all of my old manuals to.. I can't seem to let them go.. it is like if I do that then I am truly and certainly done.. Keeping them means that I can always pick up a wrench sometime and get back to it.. Be forever young Nick! 500 hp GROSS on the bench is 410 hp NET installed in the car.....compared to a 2019 Dodge SRT with 485 hp NET installed in the car--not even close..no way these old motors can match the new ones.

you understand that was a mildly tuned engine with min. computer controls and a carburetor, right......not everyone cares about gross hp, ESPECIALLY when driving classic muscle
@chadhaire1711
@chadhaire1711 4 жыл бұрын
@@jfk64kennedy95 "mildly tuned" I think NOT. A stock 1970 vintage 440-6 claimed 390 hp gross by the old rating that was dropped in 1972. Under the new industry standards used for the past 48 years, the 440-6 is really 325 sae net horsepower compared to a 2019 Dodge 5.7 at 375 net hp. or SRT at 485 hp, BOTH will outclass and outrun this 440-6 easy. 500 gross is about all you can get out of a street 440-6 on a bench and be driveable, and installed in the car with air cleaner and mufflers, this will drop to about 410/425. Again, getting more out of this old design just isn't going to happen--I have yet to see any NICK video where he got more than 550 gross out of a street 440--have you? The newer engines are just better and these older ones are more for show and noise than power--because the power potential is just not there. By the way, the REAL horsepower of the old 426 Hemi is not 425, as claimed, but really 350, only 15 more than a 2019 Camaro with 335 hp V-6. I am sure Nick does good work, but the horsepower ratings on his gauges don't mean much.

Blown power valve? Cracked distributor cap? No kidding, Chocolate Milk? All those college kids cramming for their midterms are wrong? Lol! And I still can't tell w bad I want to work for Nick! So much to learn from the master! As far as RPM goes, a co-worker of mine built a solid cam 383 with closed changer heads, ported by Valley Head Service. He spun that motor to 7500 rpm regularly, but he built it for high rpm, and it screamed at the track. It ran high 11.00's in a 70 Challenger, with full interior, no weight removed. Now as for this engine. The 440 with a Mopar Performance .509 292 cam, ported iron heads, Holley Street Dominator single plane manifold with a 0.3310 750 cam carb and headers makes 521 horsepower, when it has the exhaust heat crossover installed along with a windage tray. It's an old school combo that Mother Mopar developed in the late 70's that was featured in just about every magazine out there at one time or another. When you put that engine in a Duster with 4.30's and 10X29.5 slicks you had a 10.90 comp car that was very consistent, especially with a 727 and low gear set that had 2.75-1 first gear and a 2500 stall converter. It was the car I was going to build, but never had the money to do so.

Sounds like Nick should install a rev limiter on the ignition circuit to protect this awesome engine from being destroyed. I always thought the six pack made good sense. Sure it can be a chore to sinc the carbs and keep the linkage adjusted but with a good sized two barrel as primary it can allow more air flow than the primary of a four barrel and breathe better at wide open throttle. I was made to believe some engines use less fuel at cruising speed if the carb is big enough to allow sufficient air flow. If the primary of a four barrel is too small for the engine, it will be using the secondaries to maintain cruise speed and thereby use more fuel. That is assuming the secondaries are vacuum operated as one of mine was.

I think that nick should put the chocolate milk. In the carbs. And maybe that will kick in the #1 cylinder.😃😃😃

my thought too, but i suppose if someone has used a plastic water bottle with acceptable results for a long time, it may be hard to convince them that they don't need one. but, really, it's useful for much more than comparative header temp checking.

I've got both , but out in the field one day at work I hadda rely on the spray bottle. Told me I had a dead hole. Try it for kicks one day to learn it ,pull a plug wire off and squirt away.

Seemed to improve itself each run. If that had been running with one valve not opening for a while there would possibly be some crusties around the valve that take a few runs to dislodge so it seals properly.
