SID CAESAR: The Garbage Sketch (YOUR SHOW OF SHOWS - VERY rare sketch)

NOTE: No date is available for this sketch, which has only been released on very rare out of print VHS/Betamax tapes. My undying gratitude to KJH, the uber-fan of Sid Caesar in Pennsylvania who found these tapes, had them transferred digitally, and shared them with me so that I could make them available on KZbin.

The opening scene where Sid takes the stand, and Howie Morris is doing the questioning, really shows the huge size difference between the 2 men, when Sid stands screaming about the garbage being thrown out...to me this is important, because you get a true appreciation of how Howie was able to cling to Sid 's legs, and how Sid was able to walk with Howie hanging all over him, in the legendary classic bit This is Your Story, with Sid as Al Dunfy and Howie as the immortal Uncle Goopy!

Yes, Howie wasn't much taller than Imogene and Sid was almost a foot taller than she was. And the stories about Sid's strength aren't exaggerated. In a bit from 1954, Carl Reiner (who was taller than Sid) jumps on his back, followed by Howie, who jumps on his. Sid then walks offstage carrying almost 300 pounds of Second and Third Bananas on his back. And he doesn't even stagger. I had to watch it twice to believe it! ---kjh

Amusing sketch, but I've never seen Sid, Imogene, Carl, and Howie serving as supporting players on YSOS for another player like this! Who was the fellow playing the judge-waxing-eloquent? He even got the last word and gag! Thanks so much for sharing!

You're welcome! The judge is Dennis King, a Brit who was primarily a stage actor, although he did a lot of TV as well. Your observation is spot on--although you don't see a lot of episodes like this on video, Sid and company were always willing to let a guest host who could do a sketch well take the spotlight. Sid once said it didn't matter who got the laugh as long as there was a laugh. --kjh

In that last respect, Sid was laudably like Jack Benny, whose supporting cast got as many, if not more, laughs as he did. Thank you for the ID of Mr. King. He did seem to take over the sketch, and I'll have to hunt other surviving appearances by him. And many thanks again for your terrific shares of these YSOS gems.

Excellent observation-- Jack Benny was the first major comedian on a national series to understand that it wasn't important who got the laughs on his shows, just that the laughs were gotten. Sid was certainly in this vein, with no resistance whatever to letting his castmates shine as brightly as possible. I wasn't aware until recently, thanks to observations by kjh who's been watching the whole series at the Paley Center, that Imogene routinely had her own solo number in every YSOS episode. [wgw]

This whole sketch is wonderful -- Sid *is* conceding the spotlight, but he's also being himself here. As "smaht" as he was, he was a blue-collah guy at heart -- and I could imagine how he just ad-libbed all his dialogue here (probably while telling off Mel Brooks, LOL . . . )
