Thanks! I use a www.douglasoutdoors.com LRS C9642MF casting rod. It's 9'6" medium fast.

@@fishwithjd I got the 3.0 mag lip out there, but no hookups. I saw some massive 15lb steelies and a lot of zombie salmon. Couldn’t get ant bites though, even when I put stuff in front of their faces. I tried 3.0 mag lip, 1/4oz kastmaster, 1/4oz little Cleo, bnr soft beads and size 2 spinners. The white mag lip seemed to scare the fish when it came from behind. Am I using lures that are too small?

What rod and reel setup would you recommend for use with a side planer?
@fishwithjdАй бұрын
Well depends on the size of the river and the fish but generally speaking, a 9’ to 9.5’ rod rated for 8-15 lb test with a bait caster reel

Hi JD! I picked up the last one in my city after i watched your video!!! it wasnt cheap but im very excited to try it out this year! I was wondering if you could use side planers for spring/summer/fall chinook fishing as well? Ive seen videos down in the US where drift boats will fish plugs for chinook; is this the same presentation from the bank? and could i use this technique to back bounce roe down a run rather than fishing plugs? Thanks for your time!
@fishwithjd3 ай бұрын
@@brennanyu8790 awesome. Good luck. Let me know if you get bit using it! Yea you can use these for kings and yes, same presentation…slowly walk it back down the run. You could fish roe behind a Luhr Jensen Jet Diver with the help of a side planer but I have never tried that. Good luck!

@@fishwithjd Thanks JD! Will do Ill give both of them a try!

Which was is better for fall steelhead fishing in faster water? The sidewinder or the above side planner??
@fishwithjd6 ай бұрын
@@denisehulette5935 I have never tried the Sidewinder but the one in the video will work most fine in pretty quick water. Just use the smaller fin that it comes with.

Can these hold enough tension with a flatfish for salmon?
@fishwithjd4 жыл бұрын
I have used them for salmon! Big plugs like a K16 can get a little over the top but smaller plugs like the MagLip 4.5 and K14 work. great.
@MatanuskaHIGH4 жыл бұрын
You can use a heavy weight and clip plug to line and let it slide down to swivel above weight also for plug fishing.
@fishwithjd4 жыл бұрын
Yep...that's obviously a stationary type of deal which is great if you are in a travel lane. The advantage to the planer is you can back down a run like you would in a boat.
@MatanuskaHIGH4 жыл бұрын
fishwithjd totally! The method I mentioned is best for plunking type situations like the eklutna tailrace in the matsu valley. Planers work great though. Hardly ever see people use them and I was taught how on the sandy river in Oregon for steelhead.

Where do you get those side planers at and can i use those with spinners
@shaunlehman91584 жыл бұрын
They work better for plugs and or diver with spin glo and bait I’ve never tried a spinner it might work tho..
@fishwithjd4 жыл бұрын
Hey James! I agree with Shaun, a spinner would be tough due to the lack of buoyancy. A Spin-n-Glo, however, would work. You can get side planers here: amzn.to/2X0lEYN
