A looky-see at the oft talked about art of Side Sleeping in a hammock.
We are taking a look at it.
ander at me sideways in my Warbonnet XLC, Warbonnet Eldorado, Dutchware Chameleon, Dutchware Netless hammock, AMOK Draumr, Warbonnet Ridge Runner bridge hammock, Dreamhammock Raven and Wilderness Logic Snipe.
I lay sideways in the JRB Greylock 4, HG Incubator, WB Wooki. Also on an REI Flash pad and an Exped Downmat XP 9.
Also think about a pillow or stuff sack between your knees as an option. Or a pillow behind your back.
All secure in sector seven,
Shug

Get a life... At least, if you like mans in hammocks, if you like people boiling water... Why dont you go and camp at your borders. You will be able to see many many many man in a single hammock and many many many people fighting for a cup of boiling water. Go make a donation of your used tarps instead of throwing them. I bet you have only one garbadge container where you put throables, old food, chemicals... and tarps.

Perhaps you should create a travelling hammock consultancy. Travel to state fairs, guns shows, outdoor events, etc. Set up all your hammocks and, for a fee, let folks try them out, consult them on the best option for them, etc. As you travel, camp at various locations and write off the travel expenses as business research & development.

My 7 yr old grandson moves out of his crib at 1yr. He has been sleeping in a hammock the last 6 years. We bought a bunk bed for him and 2 wks later he asked to sleep in his hammock. I hung it corner to corner 5in off the bed. His 1st yr he would nap with me or by himself in my hammock outside and inside. That boy sleeps all dirrections. I have 4 more grandkids all younger nap in his bed hammock and the other two hung in the north room. Good show.

I only side sleep and since you turned me on to hammocks 5 years ago I love sleeping fetal in gathered hammocks. The only problem I’ve ever had is getting cold on my shoulder at night. I’ve tried several under quilts but I feel like a wider under quilt would totally solve that. Wooo buddy you’ve done us a great service in helping us hang!!!!

Very good topic. My CPAP battery died one night and I had to sleep on my side to live. The only way I could get comfortable was to double up a torso length self-inflating pad and put it under my hips. This seemed to give me a flat side lay and I’m still here 👍🏼

Thanks! Finally a video on this! I have found that the size of the pillow in a GE makes all the difference to get more side and not have arm fall asleep or freeze off. The neck needs more pillow support since the wider shoulder comes into play. I haven’t decided if facing into the GE hammock is better with back to net or with face to net. Excellent work again!

Ha! Nice vid. I have been mostly side-sleeping in my hammock every single night for the past 6 years. It's great. I will never go back to sleeping in a bed. I sometimes sleep on my back, but mostly I end up curled up on my side, just like side-sleepers do in a bed. I have been using the Eno ProNest for 3 years, I prefer it because of it's smaller size, it fits in my small apartment rooms better.

Im a side sleeper, and for parallel lay, i have my hammock strapped up tight and flat. I also dont use an underquilt or sleeping pad, but just modify a LONG SIZE somewhat roomy/wide sleeping bag (not mummy shape) with a hole in the bottom (to thread the carabiner of the sleeping bag through) and have this around my hammock. Not using an underquilt saves a lot of weight, and it is still really comfortable (IMO). Only problem is that the hammock pushes out and create a small gap on the top of the sleeping bag, so it allows some air circulation. This can be adjusted with the cord in the opening of the sleeping bag, and is actually a good thing in warm seasons, but it could be an issue if its cold. Especially if you dont wear a sweater or something.

Excellent demos, explanations and gear coverage - just what I needed... but then it reminded me of the golfing joke... George got a new job. His fellow employees always met for a round of golf every Saturday. They asked George to meet them at 10AM on Saturday morning. George replied that he would love to meet them, but he may be 10 minutes late. On Saturday morning George was there at exactly 10AM. He golfed right handed and won the round. Next Saturday rolls around, and George says that he will be there, but he may be 10 minutes late again. He shows up right on time, golfs left handed, and wins the round. This continues for the next few weeks, with George always saying that he may be 10 minutes late, and then always winning the round golfing, either left or right handed. The other employees are getting tired of this, and decided to ask him what the deal was. They said, "George, every Saturday you say you may be ten minutes late. You never are. Then you show up and golf with either right handed or left handed, and always win. What is up with that?" George replies, "Well, I am a very superstitious kind of guy. Every Saturday when I wake up, I look over at my wife. If she is sleeping on her left side, I golf left handed. If she is sleeping on her right side, I golf right handed." "Well," one of the employees questioned, "What happens if she is laying on her back or font?" George replies, "Then I am 10 minutes late!"

I toss and turn as I sleep. Actually, it's more of a slow rotisserie. 😀 Currently, I'm using a Hennessy Jungle Exp., double bottom. I'm not sure of the fabric dimensions. I've found going a little more than the recommended 30° lay works for side sleeping. I do like being able to use the hammock side as a sort of "body pillow". I can catch my top knee in a fold of the side and keep it level with my hip. Best advice- go out and sleep in your hammock!! Go use it. Sleep in it for a few nights in a row. It's going to take nights to get used to the lay. We're all used to sleeping on a flat(ish) mattress. We all have that "groove" in the matress our bodies have created over time. Overnighting occasionally in a hammock doesn't give enough "practice". Give it a long weekend to a week of hammock snoozing. Better yet, quit your job and run away to woods for a month or two. 😀

I can only sleep on my side and I roll from one side to the other at least 5-6 times during the night regardless of what I'm sleeping on. For this reason I resisted hammocks for a LONG time despite primarily camping dispersed in areas where finding a good "level" spot for a tent really limited my options. Now I kick myself for not going with a hammock years earlier! I use an Equip "two person" hammock with an added ridgeline. They're easy to find and they're super cheap but you will have to upgrade the suspension. I use tree straps and Whoopie Slings that I picked up on eBay. I was out a couple weeks ago with a Hammock Gear Econ 20 and a homemade top quilt fashioned from 2 Costo Black Diamond down throws sewn together. It got down to 23° one night but despite my habitual tossing and turning I slept comfortably and was toasty warm. For anyone out there who is a side sleeper like me and have been reluctant get off the ground I would strongly encourage you to give it a try! P.S. Thanks for all of the great videos and advice Shug! Always looking forward to the next!

I decided to test hang in my bedroom and figure out how to hang a hammock at home, instead of trying to figure it out in a campsite. I bought two heavy-duty eye bolts and put them in my bedroom ceiling into a roof joist, then clipped caribiiners into them and hung the hammock. First night's sleep was the best night's sleep I had in years. Same thing next night. I'm on my third hammock now and haven't slept in a bed in years, except when on the road in a hotel. I have sleep apnea and can't tolerate a CPAP so I sleep exclusively on my side to reduce the apneas and the ENO Double Nest is pretty good for that. I'm a big guy (over 6 feet tall and about 250 pounds) and I don't have a problem with it. I tried an ENO Single Nest, but it didn't work for side sleeping for me--too confined. I'd like to try a bridge hammock someday because I'd really like the option of stomach sleeping too, but what I have now has worked well for years. I don't miss a mattress at all. So far, probably somewhere between two and three thousand nights spent sleeping in a hammock. I may never buy another mattress as long as I live.

I'm a side sleeper in a bed or on the ground. In a hammock, I sometimes sleep on my back (only place that's comfortable for me) and sometimes on my side. I'm seeing you've discovered my biggest issue with side sleeping in my hammock - the fabric flapping around my face. I have a couple solutions. Normally I use solution 1 which is to sleep at a 45 degree, mostly on my side but facing just enough upward to keep my face out of that fabric. Solution 2 is to put my pillow kind of resting on the very edge - this works best right up until I wake up and the pillow is on the ground and my face is buried in hammock. Solution 3 is one I'm thinking about DIY'ing for next season - a tie out to keep that spot pulled out.

I side sleep in my hammy probably 90% of the night. I have found that if I have a really bad lay in my hammock due to having to settle for a not so great hang place, that I can get a wonderful flat lay just by side sleeping and curling up a bit. I am short, so I can do the fetal position thing. I do often back sleep in my hammock, which I never do in a bed or on the ground. I have a DIY bridge hammock that works great for side sleeping too. Nothing wrong with "testing" out hammocks for their sleepability.

Great video on side sleeping ! Like the way you presented the various hammocks and how to sleep on either side. Must have taken you a long time to do this video. Just a quick question , you seem to sleep head right and feet left , are you left handed or just your main preference? Thanks all your efforts and unbiased opinions, greatly appreciated! By the way, beard looks good on you !

Hi Shug, im a Hammock camper from germany and i love your videos and appreciate your great experience. I´ve been using a Hennessy Hammock for the last years and it was pretty good, i even could sleep on my stomach (eventhough it was not easy). Right now i am planning a big hike (roughly 2 years) at the Great Trail in Canada, but i have to figure out how to survive the winter because until now the coldest temperature i ever had was like -5 degree celsius (23 Fahrenheit) in estonia. The Hammock im gonna use is the Mosquitohammock (Mosquitohammock.com) . So for -30 degree or colder, my idea is an underquilt with 500g of dauns, a Thermarest Ridge Rest Solar and a big sleeping bag like the Valandre Neo Odin or a good Topquilt but i am not sure which one. Since i have at least a year left to plan all of this, i am gonna experiment this winter but i would like to hear your opinion on my ideas. I hope this is not too long :D Greetings and thank you!
@shugemery
@shugemery 5 жыл бұрын
I don't think that will keep you warm enough in -30º temps. 500 grams is about 17 ounces of down. Might get you to -5º but a lot of variables there. Good your going to test and see. Make sure your warm when you get in to sleep. Good luck.

thank you for making this video. I have a HG Phoenix and a Blackbird. I have lots of trouble with keeping the HG suspension over my feet, so I get cold at night. Suspension ends up under my feet and that lets all the heat out because it warps the underquilt fit. Any solutions other than buying a Warbonnet underquilt?
@shugemery

Look into the Triangle-Thingies as you can set your suspension differently. Maybe just be more aware of it?...this video may give some insight....kzbin.info/www/bejne/emqxZH6hi5qNnJY

In my Warbonnet RidgeRunner to comfortably side sleep I inflate my Exped fully so that it's quite firm when laying on it then use a thick pillow. The pillow is the secret so your neck stays straight. The firmness of the mat will coincide with body shape and preferences. Everybody's different. That's just a few tips from a part time side sleeper. To me...the firm mat keeps my spine straight and keeps my back from hurting plus like The Shug showed it puts your knees above the side strap. I guess if a person has wide hips, they may want the mat more relaxed.

This video was so, so helpful! I appreciate the thoroughness, and didn't expect so many hammocks to be covered; that was great. To those hammock owners whom are side/back sleepers, (or really any style) how much does a specific hammock's design affect lower back/side/hip strain? Or maybe the tension on how it's rigged up? I'm inexperienced and curious about the give of hammocks, or the ability to manipulate it. Thank you in advance, I know to not rely on you guys solely for an answer, but thought it wouldn't hurt to ask

New hammocker here, and full time home side sleeper. In a bed I sleep with one leg straight and the other bent, it seems to relieve pressure on my lower back. This is hard to do in a hammock. Couple questions, do you notice your ankles/feet getting pressured while on your side? How about rolling over? I assume you have to switch orientation? Side sleeping have an effect on calf ridge? This video is so timely, spent all week researching side sleeping.
@shugemery
@shugemery 5 жыл бұрын
This is more a less a demo and I don't sleep on my side long enough to know but imagine they would. Rolling over in a hammock is a bit of work. As a back sleeper I am very still so less work for me. Calf ridge...think that is not an issue as the calves are tucked up higher. A pillow under relieves that either way.

What's the best coverage underquilt for the warbonnet xlc? I really like to re-adjust in the night and I want something that's going to keep me covered if I roll over because adjusting things in the night can really suck the heat out of the sleeping bag
