Alright in this episode of the Airbus Pilot Series, I will walk you through a "side-step" maneuver. This will happen most commonly by ATC request, or perhaps you would like to request it to park on the other side of the airport. If this is feasible for ATC, they may grant you the request.
*Key take away's- Use the BIRD
*When side stepping your lateral distance to the new RWY will be LONGER than if you were to continue straight it, therefore an adjustment to your VS is NECESSARY to avoid ending up too low on approach.

Perfect, this happened to me on Vatsim 2 days ago coming into Salt Lake. I had the secondary programmed for the parallel runway, disengaged hdg activated the secondary and re engaged hdg. Ended up high and had to hand fly it in. I’ll try the bird technique. Great content V1.

For the Boeing guys: The 737 also has a "bird". It is called "FPV" (flight path vector). You can select it on the EFIS panel between the BARO knob and the display range knob.

Thank you for yet another excellent and insightful Airbus A320 tutorial video. I'm just curious to know if you can't make the sidestep manoeuvre (for one reason or another) to another runway, would you just inform ATC and fly the go-around missed approach instead ?

Very interesting! Thanks for you great content. With short notice side steps like that and only reprogramming the new runway centerfix, is it a concern that you may have to fly a go-around procedure that you did not brief in advance? How do you deal with making sure to properly execute a go-aroud procedure that you did not brief and that is not readily available for NAV mode flying ?

Great video. I would really like to see a tutorial for the main differences between 737/320. I have got pretty proficient in the 737 but with FS2020 coming out and no default 737 I think I’m going to be out of my depth!

@V1Sim
@V1Sim 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! More to come. Re building the automation will be at the pilots discretion, if you are far enough out and feel stable go ahead and rebuild but remember start from outside in so ( FD1, FD2, AP1, AT etc)
@rayanaltowayan9558
@rayanaltowayan9558 3 жыл бұрын
@@V1Sim awesome, maybe that's why some companies recommend to always have FD and autothrust on, so it's safer. But my question is in what situation do you rebuild the automation? During a side step or during a go around / missed approach

Thanks so much for this tutorial. How often do you get a side step? Is it common and what would bring on a Side step? Can you predict a sidestep with experience? Thanks again brother. Best true life tutorials Ive seen.
@V1Sim

You are absolutely welcome. They are fairly common, you cant always predict them but you can of course ask for them and anticipate a response when changed to tower frequency if traffic allows.

VATSIM Side step request ; Last night I was flying the ToLiss A319 and was on IFR approach to 30L at KMSP and the controller asked me to sidestep to 30 R. I was still a ways out and was fully configured (localizer, glideslope and APP engaged - both autopilots on...) and then got the request. I pulled up the Rwy 30R ILS runway freq and heading on my AVITAB and quickly put that into the FMC and the plane automatically sidestepped and locked onto the localizer and glideslope for 30R. It moved itself over and continued landing as if it was on 30L! Would that do the same in real life or was that just a Xplane / ToLiss fluke?

Have often heard you say something like `10 below active speed can go to flaps 3 or whatever... " Somehow you are using a reference on the speed side showing when its ok to go down to the next level of flaps... can you explain this abit better (I'm new to Airbus).
@V1Sim
@V1Sim 3 жыл бұрын
Of course, what I am referring too is VfeNext. That speed Vfen is presented as an amber = sign on the speed scale. What this sign represents is the "never exceed or flap overspeed" for the next selection of flaps. So if I am at Flaps 1 and I see the amber = sign at 200Kts I know if I am below 200 and extend flaps 2 I wont overspeed them. Now it is our procedure to extend them at Vfe next - 10kts for extra margin of safety. Therefore at 190kts I can select flaps 2 safely

V1-Simulations So, when on approach with gear down and you need to extend Flaps 3 and Flaps Full, you just watch the amber equal signs? Usually I extend Flaps 1 at the green dot and Flaps 2 at the S, but I arbitrarily lower the next stages if they are below the equals sign. I feel like if I start extending the flaps immediately, there will be excessive pitching downward to compensate for the lift and I wasn’t sure if it was acceptable to do it

What is the minimum altitude at which you can side step?
@V1Sim
@V1Sim 3 жыл бұрын
That will depend on your air carriers operational specifications and standards. I have been asked before around 500' for a close parallel sidestep, not a large one like in this video.
