In light of açcidently dropping off a ledge into deep water, I was curious to determine my current skill set in survival swimming skills as it has been many years since I've done sgo in the military. I had swam up to 100 yards in full uniform and boots. Just remember clothing is only heavy above the water. Clothing will not sink you. Keeping most clothing on will be beneficial as they will trap air and heat and you will expel too much energy disrobing. (NOTE: Never go near water wearing a bridal gown. You are likely to get trapped in the gown) . The big challenge is if you have to swim to safety. And avoid swimming if it is more than 50-100 yards. ( in calm water above 60 degree). Much less if you are not a competent swimmer. Otherwise use drownprooofing techniques or hang on to anything that floats. In my opinion the side stroke is the best stroke to swim. A side kick is less tiring especially with shoes. Everything except your head stays underwater. You can roll and switch sides if you get tired. In this video, one leg was getting tired at the end I would have alternated and go twice the distance, then a little more with more frequent rotations, then probably be exhausted. Shoes, I would only remove as a last resort in case you have a rugged shore in shallow water. I believe everyone should jump in the water with their clothes on at least once (in a safe controlled environment of course). to see where they stand. I've seen many people surprised at the difficulty but it will be less difficult if you understand the principles.
