how does pokemon online work? do you just choose whatever pokemon you want or do you have to catch them and they transfer to online

Pokemon showdown, its free but you play by the smogon tiers (OU,UU...) what that means is that some pokemon are banned.. But yeah just Google pokemon showdown

Use the Smogon website to understand rules and game types [tiers] for pokemon matches. You pretty much have to to understand each one, i suggest random battles to get the hang of using tactics over favoured pokemon and their moves, that is if you are new to it.
