I use tethers on all my camera gear. Neutrally buoyant is great for handling, but nothing beats a curly tether for not losing the gear - especially in the visibility challenged waters I dive in. One curly tether to always keep clipped, and another short bolt snap (like you have) for when you want to stow the camera out of the way. Finally, LABEL your gear! A sticky label that shows from inside the housing AND an empty file on the SD card. Give this empty file a name with your cell number, email address, or any other return info you want. FWIW, a diver got their GoPro back from me on the same dive they lost it. I found it and it had their name on it. I asked returning divers if they knew the diver while I swam out - and guess what? - the diver's boss responded. I had custody of the lost GoPro for all of 5 minutes.

So instead of going to the bottom where you dropped it, it floats in the water column. This is great for areas with good vis. Nice idea. For bad vis, though... "Oh no, I dropped my GoPro!" Diver 2 - "No problem, I've got my reel, let's go to where you lost it and run a pattern." Diver 1 - "Weeeell, it's not on the bottom..." Diver 2 - "Not on the bottom?! Oh, you mean you had it on a float handle and we just need to search the surface. Okay." Diver 1 - "It's probably not on the surface either..." Diver 2 - "What do you mean??" Diver 1 - "I put high density foam on it to make it neutral. It's just floating in the water column." Diver 2 - "Um, I can barely see YOU at 3' and we have 30' of water column." Diver 1 - "I know..." Diver 2 - "..."

Divers crazy enough to go diving in zero visibility sites, should be questioning themselves as to what is the point and what are they even trying to record if they cannot see anything?! To the divers reading this and say that is all we have to dive where I live, then I say save up a little money and take a trip to dive somewhere else, your dive skills will improve instead of getting worse and you will actually enjoy scuba diving instead of just underwater survival each dive

@@sidemountscubadiving We use the camera for macro shots of all the wonderful little critters we have. I'd rather dive every other weekend in poor viz (doing macro) than every other year on vacation. When there is only 10cm of water between you and your subject it looks crystal clear even in 1 meter vis. I do agree ZERO viz isn't worth it.

Ah, because everyone knows that vacation-only divers have the BEST skills... 😂 I don't blame people for only wanting to dive somewhere warm with good vis, but don't try and claim that avoiding local low-vis diving is going to improve your skills. Getting experience and working to improve your skills improves your skills. We're having fun in low vis, because we are used to it. And we do still use gopros, we just get a lot closer.

as easy as to carry it around already flipped, the gopro automatically flips, so... 🤷

It has been a while since I bought it, best is to google it and then try calling up a few shops that stock it, to see what they advise. There might be a shortage on it with covid etc. Cheers, Steve

Hi Christopher, the problem is making or getting the base plates I guess. Are you having trouble finding the materials? Not sure if making them is something I want to get into, I have done like 3 of them for a couple of my instructors. Cheers, Steve
