86,000 to buy or rent at 400pm. As I am an old codger I will rent as it would take me 18 years paying 400pm before I reach the price of 86,000 and that is paying cash. With a mortgage and its associated interest payments it would be more like 150,000 so add another 13 years to the 18 years = 31 years.

@@SideTripLife EV battery replacement makes the savings moot. Crazy prices for new batteries. There will be lots of very upset EV drivers in the near future.
@SideTripLife Жыл бұрын
@J Williams thanks for the comment J, to which many may agree (but mainly due to mass misinformation campaigns via echo chamber 'news'/opinion gathering, ie Twitter, FB, 'Pragar U' lol;) 1st, FOR the record, I do NOT agree with Govt's mandating we MUST switch to EVs by xx date etc, or mandating we MUST switch period (also we STILL need oil and will for some time to come). Also, I absolutely LOVE esp classic petrol cars. Regarding your points about EV batteries, that used to be true with 1st gen EVs years ago (ie: Nissan Leaf 1st generation). However, new tech EV batteries can now easily last beyond 200,000 miles or 15-20 years (Consumer Reports study) and currently degrade avg 2.3% per year (used and maintained well, better tech like Tesla lost just 12% after 200,000 miles). So new tech batteries can generally last the lifetime of an EV car or beyond. Tesla battery report: insideevs.com/news/664106/tesla-battery-capacity-degradation-average-2022/ Currently, battery replacement is indeed costly (for the few that actually need to within their lifetime, est 1.5% of all EVs & mostly the old 1st generation ones). But even those costs have dropped from $1300 per kWh just a few years ago to just $130 per kWh now. That cost will continue to drop and the lifespan will continue to improve as will the technology. After a battery is past its optimum (likely 500,000 miles in near future) it can be used for home or commercial building solar storage etc, then used in forklifts etc etc and finally 90% recycled. Add to this electric cars cost less than half to 'fuel' + avg 20 moving drivetrain parts to maintain vs 2000+ on a petrol motor, plus, living in Bangkok choking on fumes and noise... heck, it's just starting to make more sense and well, cents. My bigger fear vs battery degradation, is those still stuck in an echo-chamber of old disinformation are unwittingly assisting us being left behind globally (along with the high paying jobs & assoc industries that come from the new tech). Meanwhile, the likes of China are literally charging ahead and probably laughing at us squabbling over disinformation (on both sides) squandering our time and opportunities, making it even easier for them to blow right by us. Sad... STL
