Datsyuk toys with Crosby and scores. Google it. What was it like to play against Datsyuk? It was like trying to stop Sydney Crosby and then trying to get past Nick Lidstrom. On top of that he'd steal the puck every 23 minutes or so and he would do something every game to make you look totally helpless. Yeah, he was THAT good. If not for knee injuries he would have done more too... And Crosby wouldn't have liked that.

Been a while since I saw the stats but 24 percent of players voted Datsyuk hardest player to stop. Crosby was tied for 2nd at 12 percent. When Datsyuk was healthy (strong enough knee to stand the pressure he put on it) he was the better player. His victims said so.

This is an awesome video, it left out Sid's 2015 IIHF World Championship Gold. Sid has 7 championships, 3 Stanley Cups, 2 Olympic Golds, 1 World Cup Gold, and 1 World Championship Gold, He is a member of the Quadruple Gold Club winning all 4 of the different championships just mentioned, and he was captain in all but his first Olympic gold medal.

Imo Crosby played in much harder league and is the most well rounded hockey player ever. He has the speed, can play as a playmaker, sniper, power forward, grinder, and is one of the best 2 way forwards in the game. His skill set is unmatched and that's why I consider him the GOAT.

I have to agree for this era. Gretz played in a different era. The talent and conditioning of the players on all teams is much much better today. Many of the players on teams of the 80's and 90's would not make todays NHL rosters. Their idea of conditioning and getting into shape was to cut out eating cheeseburgers , fries and drinking a cold one in August. Today all year around special diets and super conditioning is all year around. 99 -66-68 and others would be super players and 66 because of his size more so would cope with the size and speed of todays players but I dout their numbers would be anything like they were. I did enjoy the 80's and 90's but I have to admit the new era is a much better all around talent era.

Let's not forget equipment. Back in 77 when even I went from Bauers with steel blade to Lange Lazer 5s with Perfecta blades, it made a big difference in turning and weight. Same with light weight padding, breathable jerseys etc. and the sticks now are magic as compared to the lumber pile from years ago. On a side note, an ex NHLer from the late 50s to early 60 that I knew told me their idea of fitness was going to a bar after a game ha ha.

I think we need to stop comparing Crosby and Gretzky. Different generations, different goalie pad sizes, different styles of stick. 30 years from now some player will be compared to Sidney Crosby is that fair? Crosby in his own right mind is the best player in my generation and I'm 30. (I'm talking about players in their prime). Crosby, ovie can retire today and still make the first ballot Hall of Fame. Of course you compare Crosby to Gretzky. Changes in goalies pads aside, Gretzky dominated his peers for years. If it was so easy back then, why was Gretzky so much better than anybody else? You first compare players to their contemporaries. Gretzky was better than Lemieux, and Lemieux is the greatest Penguin ever. How can you say Crosby even compares to Gretzky, different generation or not. As an aside, I believe Connor McDavid is already better than Crosby, and he just turned 21. Taking nothing away from Crosby, he's an all time great, but these comparisons to Gretzky are ludicrous. Not to mention that there's some debate as to whether Sid is even the best on his team. Malkin has had just as good a career as Sid.

Dave It's fair to compare. Gretzky's numbers speak for themselves. And before anyone compares the game from Gretzky's era to today, all I can say is that if hockey was so easy back then, everyone would have done what Gretzky did. The only players in history comparable to Gretzky are Lemieux and Orr. This is not even a legitimate argument, bc you are starting with a debatable assumption that Crosby is the best player of his generation.

Byronlee marley if you look at Gretzky's team he was surrounded by much better players then Crosby is. With no salary cap they build a monster of a team. Maybe Crosby would have put up those numbers if there was no salary cap. Yes he has good players on his team but look at the wingers Gretzky had on his line compared to the ones Crosby has. And yes the goalie equipment is a factor that can't be ignored, he wouldn't have put up the same numbers if he played against goalies today compared to ones back then.

If he was in today's game, he would have been more into fitness, he would have taken advantage of the sticks they use. Comparing players of any sport today and 20/30 or more years ago is ridiculous. No mater their titles and remarkable accomplishments of their time, they wouldn't be able to keep up with a great player in recent years. Sport by itself has developed so much over time and we know so much more about the human body, plus the competition only gets more fierce... Most people who won medals then wouldn't be nearly as successful now. It goes without saying that 3 teams with a great player is much different than 10 with 3 great players each. Sidney Crosby is the best hockey player ever no matter the numbers and yes some others come very close, but in my opinion most of them are playing now too.

Over 90% of the players back then were literal plugs with skates on, then there's the goaltending, game structure, play setups now. If you were a good player back then you literally dominated the league because most of the others were pylons.
