This was an epic production...I loved watching this as a child..I saw it again a while ago and simply love it..the entire cast was amazing..I’m so blown away at the cast and what they accomplished...this was by far a history making film...Diana Ross was and is truly breathtaking in this film...

The Wiz would not have gotten made without Diana Ross. and if it did it would have been a low budget film unseen by many. The film eventually turned into a classic and has made its money back millions and millions of times 💲💲💲

It would have gotten made without Diana Ross. Everybody knew she was too old for the part, even Barry Gordy. They wanted Stephanie Mills to reprise the role from Broadway, but Diana Ross went over Barry Gordy’s head and got the part. Ended her movie career.

@@billywall7752 Dude, 'The Wiz', starring Diana Ross, is one of the most-watched, beloved black films ever made. Contrary to what you claim, Diana wasn't playing a 'little girl', she was an adult school teacher. The film is clearly not a remake of either Judy Garland or Stephanie Mills' plays. Stephanie didn't have either the 'look' (black teenager with strong ethnic features and acne) or the 'star power' to get funding in 1977 for a major Hollywood film. If not for Diana's desire to do 'The Wiz', it would not have been made. Diana's willpower put thousands of unseen, underappreciated black creatives to work (Debbie Allen, Theresa Merritt, Mabel King, Ted Ross, hundreds of black dancers, musicians, extras etc...). Diana is literally one of the only black actresses who actually 'starred' in films then. Don't blame her for Hollywood's racial bias.

A fascinating contemporary film about the movie. Despite the massive line up of first rate talent it was a massive turkey- loosing millions of $ and ended Diana Ross' Hollywood movie career. It also put an end to big budget Movie Musicals. The numbers don't lie! The most important positive outcome was the beginning of the working relationship between Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones that resulted in recording Off The Wall, Thriller and Bad albums. Since first airing on TV the movie has achieved cult status in the African American community where it has become an annual Thanksgiving event for black families across the US.

It was a different time. Many white people were not going to see an all black remake of The Wizard of Oz. That was the main reason behind the movie not doing well.

@@knockshinnoch1950 Excellent play and I’ve seen it several times in revival with both Stephanie Mills and Ren Woods. The movie stunk to high heaven. The exceptions would be a surprisingly good performance by Nipsey Russell, a very good debut acting performance by Michael, and the absolute stupendous Lena Horne’s rendition of Believe in Yourself. Beyond that, forget it.

Diana was probably mis cast as it wasn’t designed for a thirty year old woman. I wish they had given Diana the cute Tracy Chambers hair do from Mahogany. But man that performance at the end (Home) was spectacular. No one knew she could saaaaanng like that. To this day people, even vocal students talk about that performance.
