The people in the scale model community call their pile of shame their “stash”. Helps me see my grey like some hidden away treasure instead of an obligation.

It's a difference of objective. In 40k and other wargames, the game is seen as the goal. whereas in scale modeling, the model itself is the goal. Obviously, people who only enjoy the modeling buy wargame models. But if the game is the end point, a huge pile of unbuilt or unpainted models seems like a commitment issue.

What James said about setting a very specific goal for like a 45-60 min hobby session is how i TRY to approach things. Like many others, being a parent and work there’s just limited time i have to hobby. Like 95% of my hobby time happens after 10pm or before 6-7am so i try to be deliberate about what i’m going to do… other the hand, another thing James said is 100% true also, sometimes i’m just excited to sit down and hobby and do anything! 😂

Arming yourself with knowledge about yourself and your project is one of the most important things that I learned from this podcast that I've applied. Inventory the pile of shame so I have a record of what I actually own. Time myself so I know how long things will take. Accept that it will take 'til roughly 2097 until I finish

Building Hack: Plastic bead organizing cases (6x6 grid trays with a hinged locking lid) from my local dollar store craft aisle. Cut the entire squad sprue at once filling a slot for each individual model. Stick a label on the lid to ID the squad, model slots, poses & options picked. It really helps me stay organized and save time when planning options / poses & kitbashing. Cleaning & sanding is easier too, I just work my way through the case slot by slot. Very easy to make progress in small sessions over time, easy to pickup again without losing my place. When the squad is fully assembled I reuse the empty case for the next squad build or for sorting and storing my bits collection.

I think I had 2 armies in some perpetual state of prime/base coat before I ever completely painted one. It wasn't until I learned how to truly enjoy painting that it got completed. Developing fundamental painting skills and knowledge allowed me to not worry about the basics, and have more fun with it. For example I'm not struggling with blocking out the base colors. Which frees my mind to think about which cool decals are going to go where, and what other flourishes I'm going to do. I say learning to enjoy the process is probably the most important element to having completed armies. That or not buying the latest fomo army, and using that money to have an existing army painted by somebody...

This is probably my biggest peeve! Products brought into the Hobby from other places and tripling the price!! Paint stripper is a good example! Benzyl Alcohol is a plastic safe paint stripper, you can get it from B&Q under their Diall brand, you'll get three times as much, than if you get the Bio one, for the same price! Weathering powders are ground up Hard Pastels! Matt Medium is a better adhesive for bases than PVA. It remains flexible once dry unlike pva which goes brittle. Plastic Weld from EMA is £4.25 for 300ml (Plastruct in the USA) That's my Hobby Hacks for this week

All super useful, thank you! For me, I use the Tamiya airbrush cleaner as my extra thin plastic cement. About twice the price of a 40ml pot of their extra thin cement for 6 times the liquid - top up my pots and reuse them.

I have gone from painting 30 minis in a year about 3 years ago a year (never finishing more than 100 in a year) to about 250 a year last year and this year have hit 250 already. The bits that have help are: Understanding why I am painting, which is good quality gaming minis. Rather than keep trying to push to higher levels and abandoning projects. Finishing models, regularly getting a finished peice is a great motivation... based and varnished. Sitting at my paint desk whenever I have time, even if not feeling it. Surprising how often you grab something and get progress Aside from the productivity just painting regularly does so much for brush control and speed.

assembling configurable squads I do Torso+legs+backpacks for the whole squad first. then go back through instructions to find matching arms sets and attach to a random body. then finally go back and do heads and any detail bits. then for painting i do one color/feature at a time for the whole squad at a time. it breaks up the "Done!" feeling into reachable session goals

Hobby hack: enter the next glass container from the kitchen. when you are cutting an entire squad out of the sprues, put all the parts of each model in a crème brulee glass. No (or at least very little) risk of the parts mixing up. Additional advantage: the glasses are also great for keeping tokens/resources sorted when playing boardgames Yes this is a variant of the shot glasses, but bonne maman does crème brulee 😘

So, a bit of a lesson on inflation required. All things being equal, if GW increase their prices in line with inflation, spending the money now is not better than spending money later. Inflation is a bit of a psychological trick to be honest. It is designed to weaken the purchasing power of your current money in hand year on year and get you to spend it. This is why when the Bank of England wants money to flow they will lower the interest rate below inflation and when they want it to stop flowing they will increase the interest rate. So, for example, if you bought a box for £30 in 2021 and then didn't paint it until today, and that box would have cost you £36 if you had waited, you saved no money buying that box then. In real terms the spend was the same. If you spent £30 in 2021 and the box costs £32 now, you would have been better waiting to buy it. You actually spent more money buying it then than you would have by waiting. (This is a form of negative inflation.) If you spent £30 then, but it would have cost you £50, then you would have saved money in real terms because the increase is higher than inflation. There is a lot of complexity to it, but don't get tricked by "but the price went up therefore I saved money." Not necessarily.

57:15 This may be controversial, but if you want to really rub Warhammer peoples the wrong way, try telling them that 90% of "miniature paints" are actually low quality acrylics with an absurd markup on them. Don't get me wrong, they're great for what we do in the hobby and there's great benefit to having so many premixed colours, but on the scale of paint quality they sit just barely above kids craft paints. People often talk about which (hobby) brand of white paint is best for coverage, when in reality they could just go and buy pretty much any brand of Professional/Artist grade acrylic Titanium White and it will be the best white they have used.

Anecdotal of course but I feel it would be a consistent pattern.
