Gigi Grnd but catriona didn’t pay for it. it is called sponsorship. Mak Tumang ( designer) just said the cost of the gown but didn’t say Catriona paid for it. Contestants from the PH usually have sponsors for their gowns, designers let them “borrow” the gown to wear in the competition. If they win, the gowns were usually put on a display inside the malls or museums. That’s how BIG pageantry is in the Philippines.

which is a good example that a past trend does not really guarantee a placement in the future. In 2018 Colombia did not even make top 20. Simply put a lot of other countries outperformed Colombia that year, so she was not well prepared for a MU competition. At the end of the day, MU comes down to preparation. The right girl wins, the one who can show all the stuff they look for. And for that and like everything else preparation does make a difference. Well explained, Siera.

As someone who is currently living in the Philippines and is half-Filipino, I can definitely agree that beauty pageants are a BIG deal here. I honestly just feel that Asian countries in general love beauty pageants because they love to see the combination of beautiful girls with beautiful and intelligent minds ❤️...as you said Siera it really just has to do with country preferences and if a country is willing to invest in a significant amount of time and money towards a specifc cause/event (for ex: whether that be beauty pageants or the Olympics) When I was a little girl, my Filipino Dad always wanted me to join a pageant..and now being here in the Philippines ppl have advised me to join one as well. Now don't get me wrong, I love watching beauty pageants..Pia and Cat are some of my idols and I have friends who have won some beauty pagents, but I just don't see it for myself. There's a lot of pressure that goes in to beauty pageants here, and you definitely need to fit a specific "beauty standand".. I'm always told if I lost weight I could be a beauty queen blah blah blah..but I know my worth and I love the skin that I'm in 🤗💪🏼 Thank you, Siera for always keeping it real with the beauty pageant world. Love seeing your videos ❤️ And keep spreading your body positivity message 🥰 I have definitely been binge watching your KZbin videos..and they are giving me a lot of encouragement and enjoyment during these uncertain quarantine times 🤗 Take care, always & God Bless 😊💜

I'm from the Philippines. It is considered a pride of the country to have someone win an interntional event, be it beauyy pageant, sports, singing contests ... or even place as a runner-up. But honestly, if someone doesnt even place in an international beauty event, they are easily forgotten locally. I can name all Miss Universe runner-ups from the Philippines from 2010 onwards, but prior to that I could not name Philippine representatives who never even placed in the top 20.

Well, between Margarita Moran's Miss Universe 1973 title and Maria Venus Raj started the Philippines resurgence in Miss Universe with her fourth runner-up finish in Miss Universe 2010 for example, a total of seven Filipinas made at least the first cut of semifinalists in Miss Universe: 1974 - Guadalupe Sanchez Top 12 1975 - Chiqui Brosas - 4th RUP 1980 - Chat Silayan - 3rd RUP 1984 - Desiree Verdadero - 4th RUP 1987 - Geraldine Asis - Top 10 1994 - Charlene Gonzales - Top 6 1999 - Miriam Quiambao - 1st RUP

A true image of confidenty beautiful and I must say I can still remember how I felt seeing you for the first time in swimsuit. I was like, "Work it girl!!!!!" And it made me feel so sad because I was cheering for you when the last girl is to be called for top 6. I can see you are looking at the other girls from side to side. @Une belle matinée d'été ! A part of a beauty pageant is still beauty. But you can tell that Miss Universe evolved, not your typical beauty pageant. The girls are interviewed 5 times, like for real. No other beauty pageant does that. What this thread is saying is that it's not just about physical beauty but the inner beauty matters too. To be confidently beautiful with a heart.
@mikmowmil4 жыл бұрын
You can't compare pageants to sports. The outcome of a pageant is determined solely by the opinions of a panel of judges and organizers. Whoever the judges like wins. The outcome of sports are determined by rules and performances. If its a race and you cross the finish line first you win, an error might cost you the medal even if you are among the best based on previous performances. In a match if your team has the most points in the end your team wins, its clear cut. In pageants a girl can trip on stage, not give a good answer or may have her answer ruined by translation and still win because it ultimately depends on who the judges like based on their preferences and biases. Other countries train their girls well too, some girls don't even need much training but they are likely to be overlooked because they might come from a country that isn't popular or enthusiastic.
@CrazyAsianDude4 жыл бұрын
@@mikmowmil To be honest with you. That's what countries that aren't doing well in beauty pageants say. I completely disagree with you, pageants can be compared to sports. She was talking about the trainings not the whole competition itself. The candidates train with their heart and soul just like being an athlete in any sport. Don't be so critical about it.

Another factor is those major countries have their training camps. During 90's the Philippine representatives are sending the contestant to Venezuela to train before the competition. I totally agree with you, when you say that in some countries, people do not know anything about pageants (and that's ok)... I am from Venezuela, and in 2008, when I was still at the university, I was part of an interchange student program, so we had some students from USA with us... As you know pageants in Venezuela are a big deal, so we invited these guys to watch that year's show, all together... We were very suprised to know that they had no idea about Miss Universe (They were from some very small towns, so maybe that was the reason why they did not know anything about it). Surprisingly, that year, Dayana Mendoza from Venezuela, won the tittle, and it was so cool, since even if they did not know anything about the pageant, they had a great time with us watching the show, and they even felt part of the triumph, since they were in Venezuela. It was such a great night

With South Africa, pageantry is not that huge. We did get a new director a few years ago. His name is Werner Wessels and from the interviews he has done you can hear that he did a lot of research before sending each girl off to either miss universe or miss world. It has paid off at Miss Universe with Demi winning in 2017, Tamaryn 1st runner up in 2018 and of course with our current queen Zozi. I think they have found a formula to effectively highlighting each woman's strong points and how those will help in their time if they were to win. I think South Africa also encourages an outspoken voice and with the way Miss Universe has chosen these past few years, we can see they appreciate it.

Hi Siera! First of all, many thanks that you responded to my recent comment! Partly I can understand your point, and I take your opinion very seriously, since you have lot of personal experience on the matter, no doubt about it. And it makes now more sense why the same countries place again and again hi. Still, as an occasional spectator of different pageants since many many years, I find it boring, less exciting because of this fact. Also, I think, it has become a vicious circle: if most of the contestants of the smallest countries rarely finish high in the contest, then the interest for the pageantry diminishes even more in these countries, and they prepare their candidates more poorly than before. Honestly, I like pageantry, but I loose every year my interest, it is for me now kind of predictable. What a long comment have I know written! Sorry! All my warm greetings to both of you, that you tried to explain the situation!

I’m a TOTAL FAN of pageants; however, I always rolled my eyes when I heard Miss Philippines contestants say that being Miss Philippines/Universe has always been their dream. I thought, “Really? That’s what you wanted to be when you grow up? Not a doctor or scientist or something useful?” But perhaps that’s just my Western upbringing talking. In the Philippines, pageants are a HUGE deal and it‘s very cultural. I think it‘s because when they win in the international stage, it‘s putting Philippines in the limelight. Plus, Filipinos love festivals, drama and colours, and pageants are exactly that: dramatic festival of colours! 😁

I agree, Filipinos love beauty pageants because good looks mixed with brains and talent are much desired traits. It is also as close as we can get to royalty. We have very good camps here that trains the candidate as if she's competing in the Olympics. Some countries just don't have the interest and are not sending girls who can compete with the power houses.

Culture really does play a huge part in areas of competency of people. We consider pageantry as a celebration of womanhood. Thus the strong community support for our beauty queens here in the Philippines, India and Thailand. I guess the same could be said for most Latin American countries.

This is so true... you said it spot on, it’s just part of the bigger culture in some countries. In Mexico and other Latin countries like Colombia and Venezuela, girls compete in local pageants since a very young age, and from the smallest of towns to bigger cities. It’s just something that’s well-known, respected, and people look forward to it. I assume it’s like this in the southeast Asian cultures as well.

@latinpopz79684 жыл бұрын
Exactly! Countries such as Colombia and Venezuela have a tradition from over 80 years in pageantry. It’s a celebration that everyone in those countries look forward to every year! So the young girls who want to compete are being prepared from a young age to at least compete in their location, then on a national level and last at an international pageant. So after at least 3 years of preparation the girl is well prepared and ready to rock at Miss Universe. That’s why Colombia or Venezuela place every year cause they are well prepared for years and it’s their dream. In countries like Denmark or Germany the pageant tradition doesn’t exist and the girl is elected one month before the international pageant. Something that is a disadvantage when they compete against a profesional pageant girl from for example Colombia or Venezuela.

Leighton mentioned a very good point about "if a country became good say in a year, it will trend and it will spark interest in pageants - I think this also happened to Japan (Kurara Ichibana as 1st runner up then the next year Riyo Mori won, after that, they get in to semi finals leaving India behind to represent Asia, and Australia after Jennifer Hawkins won). I think the Philippines became too hungry to win when it had its "decade of drought" in the Miss Universe. Would you agree that the Organizations "type or appetite to a certain looks" counts? During the Trump era they have a certain type of ladies that they are looking for unlike now. Supermodel type is gone.... During the Trump era certain countries gets in to the semi finals which you cannot see having chances of getting in to the top 15 lately- example, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Kosovo, Ukraine, Russia.... remember Miss U 2009? - It was a Euro pageant, in the end Venezuela won... again :)

As a South African winning Miss South Africa definitely gives you celebrity status, this why even our production in recent years has been growing. But in early 2000s we struggled at Miss Universe and probably the most famous non winning contestant being Melinda Bam. We definitely had more of a focus on Miss world years prior as well. But for my country things really started to get interesting when Demi won, the Miss South Africa organization fell upon new leadership that year too. We were able to get more sponsors and definitely glamourize her reign through this. Aside from also getting a complete revamp I.e a new runway coach, a creative director, a publicist etc these are all factors in investing in our girls nationally that has got them to do so well internationally. Before 2017 we didn’t have all of this hence the occasional placements in top 15/10 at MU. When Demi won that definitely motivated people from my country to pay attention to Miss South Africa going to Miss Universe, our pageant community is definitely still very small but our organization really gives it their all to train and equip our girls for international platforms. I’ve noticed that rest of Africa has kinda also banded behind us since then because of our consistency. My hunch is there is interest but it’s a matter of investment in those organizations. I’ll be first to say that in Africa alone, Ghana, Nigeria, Mauritius and Namibia are definitely hungry for a good streak at MU. My wish is that the National Directors of these countries do their part in training of our girls because so often they’re left to rely on their own resources which is quite unfortunate for a brand to allow this happen to any delegate.

Canada is on a par with Australia when it comes to this. Locals have barely heard of Miss Universe and the pageant system is all very low-key compared to the frenzied nations. Yet both countries perform reasonably well year after year which shows you don't have to be obsessed to be among the top.

In the case here in the Philippines, we see pageants as big deal cuz you said it right, it is already in our culture. Even the smallest organizations in a small village here are doing beauty pageants cuz it is somehow become the main or the highlight of any celebrations they have. Even A family reunion, sometimes they do pageants to give entertainment and lightens the mood of everybody.

personally I would love to see a change and allow other countries which often never got to place, to place in miss universe
@K2Torazo4 жыл бұрын
Fadalerab Rasool so why even have a pageant/contest??? So you’re simply saying there shouldn’t be a competition with no judges and just have the new winner picked out just because they haven’t placed before? It’s like saying...for example in football or soccer-we want to see a change and let’s just pick a team to win this year that hasn’t placed before regardless of the hours of practice that’s been put in...let’s not let the best of the best win this year because they keep winning. That wouldn’t be fair for any one. Your opinion is as good as any on here but I personally think it would be unfair for any country to “allow” “other” countries to place just because they’ve never placed before. This would create trouble between any country because they would think “why not our country?”. Think about it.
@fadalerabrasool35634 жыл бұрын
@@K2Torazo well I get where youre going with but what im saying is not to bash those who often gets placed. im saying that in my opinion I hope for a change that there other countries who equally deserves placements too. Even if theyre underated i saw a potential in them of what they can bring to miss universe that is often over looked bcuz we are always focusing on the popular ones, I really hope for them to recive the same type of training as the powerhouses recieve so that way they can get placements in the top 20 too and so that its not always repetitive with the same countries always placing every year
@andresland1824 жыл бұрын
There are beautiful woemn all around the world, of course, but in pageants the situation comes down to preparation and drive. Some countries used to place quite often decades ago (Sweden, Finland, Germany, Israel) but over there pageantry's strength has dwindled. In the Philippines, Colombia, Venezuela, Puerto Rico or Brazil not placing could be a great upset while in other countries they do not even know or care when or where a Miss Universe is going to be held. You brought up sports and it is quite the same: there are sports that draw millions in some countries while in others that sport is largely ignored (say, cricket). I remember once I saw a Miss Chile and a Miss Spain being interviewed and I found them gorgeous but they made it clear that winning MU was not their dream and they did not even care whether they place or not and I was surprised then but I learned that not every girl feels the pressure of their country and they take the experience lightly. In the Philippines theousands of people gathered in front of the TV, in Latin America there is faithful group of followers (though pageantry is not that important anymore in the media) but there are countries whose franchise seems to be not profitable and no one takes care of sending a candidate to the big pageant arena
