For those of you who are still wondering, it is a Weber octave mandolin. Search for Sierra Hull and octave mandolin on KZbin and there is a clip of her playing and then describing the instrument. It is tuned one octave below the regular mandolin. They are fun to play and sing with. It has nearly the same range as a guitar except the low string only goes down to the G and not an E. The mandocello has the voice of the cello (violoncello), and so the low note is a low C, a fifth below the low G of the octave mandolin.

Sierra is playing a Weber octave mandolin which is tuned exactly one octave below standard mandolin tuning. It also has a longer scale.

It's a Weber Octave Mandolin. About a 22" scale or thereabouts, and tuned one octave lower than a regular mandolin, with the strings tuned in unison pairs, also like a regular mandolin.

mr. simmons, I wasn't wondering.....I have 2 bouzoukis, if you want to see a bizarre looking bouzouki/octave mandolin, Tim O'Brien plays such that looks like Gibson F hole guitar, and another made by Coronado Giacomo ( an Italian luthier I think) which looks like it came from ....somewhere beside this planet. and both sound great. Sierra plays wonderfully....and she is cute. Carry on the torch, Sierra .. bravo!

It's an octave mandolin--more often used in irish music than bluegrass as it doesn't cut thru that mix of instruments as well as regular mandolin, being in roughly the same range as the guitar. But obvi she makes it work!

Nope. Octave Mandolin or Octave Mandola (in Europe). Extreme talent on display. Mandolins, BTW, are the surviving members of the "lute" family.

Not a mandocello and not a Gibson. Yes it is an F style, but it is actually a Weber Octave mandolin. Mandocello scale length is 25" at MINIMUM. That is standard guitar scale. Octave mandos are around 20".
