In Africa, the market place is not just a place of transaction, it is also a place of friendship, companionship and community. But what happens when the name of a market sparks controversy and questionable stereotypes? Find out in this video about the Big Market in Freetown, Sierra Leone?
Sierra Leone is a country on the South-southwest coast of West Africa with a population of over 7 million people. Some of the tribes include Mende, Fullah, Kuru, Krios (the freed slaves who returned to Africa. I'll bring you a video on this).

This was an excellent video, that is the first of it's kind recorded digitally to demystify the old untrue stories told about a historic commercial landmark. This was beautiful in many levels to learn the history and present truth from the old narratives still haunting the businesses of this location. Good job! Only us can tell our TRUTH.

I must say I saw so much beauty and creativity in that market. That's the kind of stuff I would love to buy, the masks, arts and craft, clothing etc but they dont sell such a beautiful variety where I live. You are a true genius Virtue Grace, thank you for this video especially the way you enlighten us about the effects of colonialism. Because this brainwashing thing is not a joke oh my people. We now call our own victim people “slaves” and the perpetrators of slavery “masters.” Indeed, the most potent weapon in the hands of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed (Steve Bantu Biko). Anyone who rapes is a rapist, and anyone who enslaves another human being is not a master but an oppressor in my humble view.

Excellent show. 👏👏Good to know that schools bring the children to extend and facilitate their knowledge. Increasingly ‘our own’ people need to value our arts, culture and crafts more. Evidently these craft markets best customers are diplomats from all over the world. African trade between countries needs to flourish. For example I would like to see interior designers in African hotels using more local arts and crafts instead of cold , artificial stylised decor. There is the issue of artefacts which have spiritual and ritual value. I would expect those to be kept in their countries of origin. Possibly museum curators in Europe seek out rare artefacts for exhibition displays.

O Grace, Grace! Big market nice, girl! I had to watch again and that coat you tried on, the other locally made materials, shirts, slippers, bags, everything is calling out to me. But more importantly, the culture is astounding; the spirit can be felt as the man explains the history of the masks. Tthe artwork is exquisite. It was good of that gentleman to show you around, and debunk the nasty rumours obviously intended to destroy their businesses and income. I like the mom and triplets. All revealing our rich heritage. Thank you, honey for the drumology. Always immerse yourself - dance, drum, sing - and you cannot lose.

Big Market is how things business SHOULD be conducted. I am not a fan of street vendors/open air markets as it causes too much traffic issues. We need to get them all into a building or an area that is not a through street for traffic(foot traffic only) Big Market's ties to slavery are new to me. I will research this.
