everyone thank you so much. I've tried to heart everyone's comments but it's getting hard to keep up. Please know we are very grateful for the incredible outpouring of love and support we've received from friends, family, and even complete strangers. We lost a lot of stuff, but we have the four of us, and our neighbors saved our cat, and that's what matters. The song is "Big Swimmer" by King Hannah. You can't quite hear it, but what I say to my son in the video is we can choose to be kind even when life is cruel. God bless you all ♥

We lost our house and belongings in a fire. I remember sitting in the driveway and hearing my husband saying "it's all just junk." He was right. We survived and life went on. You and your family are still together and that's all that matters. Most material things can be replaced. There were a lot of things we didn't bother replacing and also learned a valuable lesson to not hold onto material possessions. You may find that you will simplify your life. All tragedies can be a learning experience. I am sorry you are going through this. But a new phase of your life is about to unfold.

Aye aye. Things will start looking up from here. Having had just survived a house fire in 2017 and a very close call with the Line Fire, it's really important to keep your people and pets safe and keep your sentimental items ready to transfer into a fireproof box/safe. A house is nothing. You, your loved ones and your cute pets are really all that matter here.

Yeah but what if you're, say, a musician with your studio and equipment in your house. It can take years to build a workshop, whatever your trade or hobbies are. That can be utterly devastating to lose that space.
@mariarohmer23745 күн бұрын
This may be a hard message to give right now. Not sure it's the time. That said I do completely understand what you are saying. I lost most of my precious possessions in different circumstances. Rats at a storage facility and a drunk brother (long story). In the end I was left with a 1/4 or less of what I cherished and held onto. But you are right - something happens inside you and you look at everything so differently. I am happy to replace some of what can be replaced but as for the other stuff I no longer need all those things. Again, I don't want to be insensitive to the unjust and sickening loss all these good people are feeling. I live near Altadena and grew up in Pasadena. There is pain everywhere. I worry about the mental heath of all these families. I wish people like you who know and can relate could create support group meetings and be there to talk them trough this. They need strength and hope. They need a map and someone to help walk them through all this who's not an insurance rep or some govt official. They need a heart and soul person to hold their hands. Bless you and bless all those suffering from this tragedy.

House fires are really a metaphor for life: In the end, all that's left of us is ashes and dirt. It's a sobering realization/acceptance, but it underscores the true value of life, and that's experiences and relationships. Not possessions, not even buildings, not land. It's the meaningful relationships you create and the vibrant experiences you go through that give us true substance. Still, losing your home in a fire is absolutely devastating, and you deserve so much compassion. I grieve for you, and for all the souls who lost their precious homes and their livelihoods and other important physical spaces. It is incredibly traumatic. I know, in time, there will be healing and moving on and growing, but right now it's extremely raw and devastating and the grief cannot be overstated. Hugs from a stranger on the internet.

The things I miss the most are the things I can never replace like pictures, my sons’ baby memorabilia, family heirlooms, and my kitty, Venus. 💔 It was also a windy night and after the three units were going down so fast, the firefighters decided to concentrate on saving the remaining units and sacrificing the three. When you take that bend and you see the new normal. Police, national guard, convoy of fire trucks - just rips your heart out. This is beautifully produced. I'm so sorry had to be under these circumstances.

I wouldn't necessarily call it the new normal. It'll only be this way while the fires are still active and maybe during the rebuilding. It won't be forever. The cops and NG are just here to prevent looting.

I grew up in L.A. County, born 1955 and lived in Hawthorne until 1988. We still knew of these wonderful neighborhoods and are shocked at the massive loss and on such a large scale. Sending love from Colorado.

Sending a hug. I'm very sorry. I'm up by Altadena and while not affected, I'm devastated by the impact on many friends & coworkers.

Holy cow, you're one of the lucky 50% that wasn't affected?! Because of the amount of people I know that lost their home there, I initially estimated that at least 80% of the city was gone. Kinda surprised me when I heard it was only half. I'm happy you still have your home. My mother almost lost her house in the Eaton fire, too. During that first week, she felt certain that it would be gone.

These people are not millionaires or movie stars. Just a regular working family who suddenly lost everything. I hope they have insurance and can recover quickly. I donated money to one of the charities and i urge everyone to do the same.
