My Grandma made delicious fry bread...cooked in Crisco! She also made a fried buttermilk batter bread and fried cornbread. I always feel close to her when I cook one of her recipes. She passed two years ago today at age 96.

I love seeing how different the methods are for cooking frybread across Turtle Island! Up here in Coast Salish Territory we often used oolichan grease to cook them which gives the frybread a salty umami taste! It would be cool to have a frybread competition to see how different each Nation/Tribe makes theirs!

(I'm from SK Canada) My Cree mom uses the same ingredients as Sierra, just before she kneads the dough she makes a circular indent and adds either bacon grease or lard (no measurement "about that much"), but she always uses lard to fry up the bannock, no cooking oil. my sister makes hers the same but uses a whole egg.

I've tried fry bread... now I know how to make it...my niece used to make some for us... she introduced us.. what she called Indian tacos.... I loved em... but they moved away and never taught me how to make em.... now I know . Thank you for sharing.... it's almost like making tortillas....

I use canola oil because it has a high heat point which means it won't smoke up your kitchen. I love frybraed! I got to make some too along w some chili beans... thanks for sharing your recipe! Here's mine: 7 c blue bird flour 2 T baking powder Salt to taste 1 T crisco ( mix into dry ingredients then add the water to form a dough) 4 c very warm water

I love frybread!!!! Your bread looks amazing!! I eat mine with stew soups sandwiches like spam or bologna!!!! I'm Cherokee/blackfoot the only difference is we put sugar and dry milk.. some times dried fruit with butter for breakfast!!

Yum! Love Spam too. I had a frybread buffalo burger in Cherokee, NC that was out of this world delicious. My mom like using the basic yeast bread recipe, but of course she loved to cook and was always making things differently, which was alright, because she was one of the greatest cooks ever. I am going to use peanut oil. I hope mine turns out as good as yours looks. Beautiful earrings. To bad I am a little late for the drawing. Have a blessed holiday season. :)

Yummy. My Mom used to make me frybread and Fried Onions sandwiches. Back home in Toadlena, NM. I miss her so much. And also Fried Eggs and fried Spam sandwiches. We didnt have much back on the rez, so we cooked whatever we could. Some of my Moms crazy recipes.

My Gran didn't grow up with frybread, but fried spam, cheese, and onion for sure! It wasn't until meeting my Diné friend that I was introduced to frybread and wojapi. I made some for the first time in ages when she unexpectedly passed away a few months ago. She never had a recipe either, just "how she felt that day." I miss her and what would have been her birthday is coming up soon, so I think I might need to make some more! haha

I have had a spam or treat sandwich but not on fry bread or with onion. Looks very good. Going to have to try it soon. My great-grandmother (not native but she looked it. Dark Irish-Dark English heritage.) made fry bread when she was doing a baking of bread. Usually we had cinnamon sugar or butter on it.

I live near the reservation of the Alabama-Coushatta tribe of Texas.I have seen the fry bread they make and sell as fundraising efforts. They make them up like tacos. I havent tried it, but it looked good. So did your batch. Thanks for sharing!

Sierra Johnson this video was so much fun and I absolutely enjoyed every second of it. I got so tickled when you were hesitating with the hot oil because I was thinking the same thing. I'm so excited because my daughter and I are going to make fry bread this weekend we are making Sierra Johnson's fry bread so you will be in our kitchen with us and will rerun your recipe so that we can make the fry bread and I am going to pick up some spam and an onion and some cheese because I love spam and I know that I have not had it in a long time and your sandwich looks so good. Back in the 1990's like early 1990s my husband wanted to show my son and I how beautiful New Mexico and Arizona was especially at that State Line with the big teepee so he drove us out there and I'll never forget there was like a shack that's all it was built on the Navajo Indian reservation right there and there was a young woman and her grandmother and the grandmother was very elderly and she was as precious as precious could be anyway the granddaughter translate for her because the grandmother only spoke Navajo and she made the fry bread this grandmother I never had fry bread in my life and she cut up and these soft apples and put confectioners sugar on a little and put them on that hot fry bread it was the best thing I have ever tasted in my life I have never had frybread again so I was so excited to see your video. You cook just like my grandmother and mother taught me to cook oh you just put a smidgen of this and a little bit of that in and a little bit of this so you brought back these wonderful memories from the day I met the Navajo grandma and had my first fry bread to being in the kitchen with my grandma and mom thank you and now I'm going to make that memory with my daughter as we attempt to make our first fry bread tomorrow which will be Saturday the 25th I believe of January in Cincinnati Ohio and you will be with us so thank you so very much you are absolutely a sweetheart and I know that your mother must be so proud of you because you're like this sweet adorable young woman.
