An epic tussle for the finish line, an astounding feat for Sifan Hassan. The Dutchwoman became the first athlete to medal in the 5,000m, 10,000m and the marathon at the same Olympics since Emil Zatopek in 1952 when she outsprinted Ethiopia's Tigst Assefa and won the women's marathon at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Hassan had already won bronze in the 10,000m two days previously and 5,000m bronze before that.

Forget about Simone Biles, Sydney McLaughlin and all the others. THE performance of these Olympics is Sifan's. 3 gruelling races - 5000, metres, 10000 metres an the marathon. Running on her own against teams of athletes, and she comes home with 2 bronze and a gold medal. An achievement for the ages. Why isn't it being talked about more!

@@skillgames1385 Bahrain got 2! So, what you made a quantitative comparison. I extended it. Now you want to say that the number of medals should be more than 3 or 4. Why not say they should be more than 15 and then New Zealand would be out. To me it is definitely more remarkable that St. Lucia won 1 gold and 1 silver and that too in a track event, the heart and soul of the Olympics, than all the medals New Zealand won. Now, perhaps what you really want to say is that These countries don't count because they are not countries with white European descent athletes for the most part.

Hasan was a refugee but she was not happy in the asylum seekers' reception center. A Dutch woman who was a recreational runner lived nearby. Hasan became friends with this woman and they started training together. This Dutch woman saw a talent in Hasan. Hasan then moved to Eindhoven on her own when she was 16. There she went to the sports academy of Eindhoven and there she trained and participated in the Dutch championships. Here she was discovered by the Dutch Olympic Committee who then started investing in her. In 2014 she won her first international medal. Hasan has won a total of 24 medals.

This is inexcusable, horrible planning by the Olympic Committee, the world record holder in 5000m had to withdraw from the event because he did not recover from the 10000m gold medal win. They should just dump swimming which is an affirmative action 35 events so White Europeans (including North Americans, Australians and New Zealand) can win about 80 or 90 medals in it. Chinese win some. It is only because swimming starts in the first week that they don't start athletics in the first week. If they start in the first week or earlier then the events: 1500m, 5000m, 10000m, and marathon can be properly placed so that there is enough time to rest. In such a set up, Sifan could have won a medal in the 1500m as well as she did in Tokyo Olymics.

@pjetli1

@@jorritvandervelde3006 Agreed, but Beatrice's two golds in 5k and 10k is also world class as was Sifan's 5k and 10k world class in Tokyo and as was Tirunesh Dibaba's winning 5k and 10k world class in 2008. As was Faith Kipyegon's winning the third consecutive 1500m world class. Only one runner has won three consecutive gold medals and that is Bolt in 100m and 200m. It think each of the individual running events from 100m to the marathon are specialized and in the Olympics winning the marathon is no greater than winning the 100m or 5k or 10k. Given that, Chebet's 2 golds in individual events stands out at this Olympics as the best performance. Of course she runs for Kenya and not for a European country does not bring her as much publicity but that does not matter ss both Faith and Beatrice received immense love when they returned home. If you think there is not a European bias, you should see the press conference of the women's 1500m and the men's 10000m. In the 1500m the first two questions were asked of the white British bronze medalist instead of Kipyegon who made history as being the first triple gold repeater in any non sprint event. In the men's 10,000m the first two questions were asked of the bronze medalist white American Fisher and not of Joshua the gold medalist who is also the world record holder.

This is what Assefa said at the press conference: "I didn't expect the moment that happened...maybe if that moment she didn't push me, I might have the gold. But anyway I am so happy for her (that) she gets the gold medal." How can anyone call Tigst a cheat? She is so sweet and so sportsman like. She was so close, of course she would think this way. And she said "might" and "would". I don't think she would have won anyway but she is doing the running with confidence and this is her authentic feeling and she is expressing it. They will have many more races together and they will be friends and each will win many world majors. Tigst will win the Olympic marathon in LA.

To put things into perspective: The Dutch required a mere 1.2 million people to secure a single Gold medal, while it took a staggering 8.3 million Americans to achieve the same. Per capita, that means the Dutch won Gold at seven times the rate of the Americans. Quite a difference, isn't it? LOL!

Very bad move from Assefa and then later protest against Hassan. Evil woman. She almost push Hassan off. Some people do everything for a win. They have to do something against that. Protest for nothing, but your own mistake.

I try to ride ,on my normal bicycle, for 2 hours at 20 km an hour. I can tell you ( if you dont know allready🙂) this takes some training. Those people rùn at those speeds...so for me ,with hills and wind, it would be an accomplishment if i could follow them by bike.😅

Not surprising if you have a massive talent pool like the US and China with economy to match to develop outstanding athletes. What the Netherlands have accomplished this Olympics is nothing short of amazing. A small country with just 18 million citizens managed to outperform countries (in regards to achieving gold medals) as Germany, Italy, the UK, Canada, Spain, Brazil, etc. The 6th ranking overall on the olympics is an amazing accomplishment.
