I also didn't know that we had a Thames River, here in the United States... However I can't say that I'm surprised about it. Our "Founding Fathers" weren't known for their originality when naming places, rivers, mountains, etc. Still, very neat to learn about it. Thanks for sharing, and educating us on U.S. history, Si! 😁
@Lucius19582 жыл бұрын
Yep: I live not far from the Thames, and have crossed it frequently. However, we don't call it 'Tems'; we say it as spelled, pronouncing the TH, and rhyming with 'James'. In New London, they just had their annual 'Burning of Benedict Arnold' festival, commemorating his attack on the town in 1780. Arnold was a native of Norwich, not far upriver, and led British forces to burn NL down, including a brutal assault and massacre at Fort Griswold. The next year, the locals decided to burn him in effigy; this ceremony soon spread throughout the States, and continued up until the Civil War. It was recently revived in NL, and I have had the dubious honor of portraying Arnold a couple of times. However, in consideration of Arnold's service at Saratoga, one leg of the effigy, representing his wound there, is removed before the burning, and symbolically 'buried'.

The blue colour of the Dolly blue, was added to white washing to bring out the white colour. They still add a blue colour to modern washing powder, like Persil. If you look at washing powder you can see the blue flecks. As far as stains were concerned, the stain would have been scrubbed out using washing soap, usually on a wash board 👍🏻

Hi Si, hi Tim, I love the bottle dump digging. So many cool finds. Your up cycles are so creative. The Thames River here in Connecticut is pronounced like The name James. Drop the jay sound and add a Th. New London, Groton just a stone’s throw from me here on the coast of New Haven Harbor. Fall River find so amazing . Back in the 1800’s a young girl was tried for murdering her parents with an axe here in Fall River. . She was found innocent, but some mediums today said she did it. A song came from that the children would sing......Lizzie Borden took an axe and gave her mother forty wacks. When she saw what she had done, she gave her father forty one. Thanks Si, always a treat. EEEEEE!! MY hometown IS Norwich Connecticut! Right on the Thames. Thames is pronounced with the "TH" as in "this or That ", in Connecticut. The Thames flows from Norwich south west to Long Island Sound where it splits Groton and New London. The city borders being right in the middle of the river and the Goldstar Memorial Bridge spans the gap between the two towns/ cities. The two native tribes on opposite banks are the Mashentuckette Pequot and the Mohegan's. Groton and New London were very important whaling and fishing towns with many a naval battle there at the mouth of the Thames. To this day there is a naval submarine base at Groton next to General Dynamics sub base which builds and refits submarines for the US government and is one of the major employers in that area. Norwich was settled in 1659. That is not old to you across the pond but it is here! My mother never allowed me to go to Groton/New London because of the sailors. Im sure historically many a mother felt that way Lol. 💜

Fall River was quite a historic industrial town. 50 years ago, many of the mills were still standing. Having family in New London, Norwich and Uncasville, we always pronounced Thames just like they do in England. Maybe people changed the way it’s pronounced in the last 40 years.
@annettefournier96553 жыл бұрын
@@patstats1 Born and raised in Norwich. My mom was from New London my dad from Boston. I'm in my mid 60s. Never heard anyone from the area pronounced Th as just T. Greetings from California! California Fig Syrup was pretty popular. Probably quite delicious too! I’ve seen most of the mud larks find these bottles. It was sold as a laxative, and was probably effective naturally. But I do love the old, embossed bottles, especially the “snake oil Sam” ones…selling possibly harmful ingredients with wild claims of cures.

INSANE you found a bit of Fall River History. I grew up a few towns over from Fall River, though closer to New Bedford, in a little town called Wareham. There's a Wareham in Dorset UK which is our official sister town. The house I grew up in was built in 1783, and I'd give my high teeth to go back there and metal detect in that yard. But yeah, wow, I also spent a lot of time in Connecticut where that Taunton steamer was beached and had NO CLUE of this history. AWESOME VIDEO.
