Hello....at 23:02, as a violinist, my guess is that it would be a rosin container/holder which is used on the bow. Rosin is used to provide friction for the bow rubbing against the strings for a stronger sound. I believe it is traditionally made of tree sap.
@Sifinds2 жыл бұрын
Cheers! 👍🏻🐾🧡
@neilcam2 жыл бұрын
My initial thought was exactly the same - yep, very definitely a rosin frame/holder. However, it may be that Tim was right and did contain a sponge to which oil was added and then applied to the bare gut strings that were in use back then.
@dianesilas42432 жыл бұрын
I use gut strings on my viola de gamba, and dont have to oil them. But they may have had a different manufacturing process back then that required oiling the strings.
@dianesilas42432 жыл бұрын
I just did a quick google search, and apparently oiling gut strings is a thing. I would never have guessed.

Simon, the little bottle at 3:55 could be a Queen of Sheba paint pot. It may have had gold paint in it and since it was not real gold but brass and copper mixed, its turned green. I saw a bottle like that on Northern Mudlarks. I cant help it, the Virol jars remind me of the Cremation Urns that are used here. Only difference is they are metal.

I'm amazed to see the Arrowhead hot springs Item. This place is about 20 miles from my home. Most people around here don't even know anything about it... At 23:22 that oil for violin strings thing reminds me of an applicator you still use today to rosin up your bow. You cup the rosin applicator in your one hand and draw your bow over the rosin with the other hand. It leaves a chalky substance on the bow strings which is kind of sticky/crunchy and it coats the strings so the bow glides over the strings when playing the instrument and make the lovely violin sound. (I played the viola way back in grade school).
@snarkycard2 жыл бұрын
@@thiswonderfullandpenwithco1151 Yes, it's for the bow strings. When Si shows it over the violin you can see it would not be wide enough to use across the string area. When Tim first takes it he scoops out the inside and that was probably the rosin which was leftover inside it.

Having worked in a music shop I ( I teach keyboards) violins have a resin lubricate for the strings this looks like it could be a resin block holder like a school black board cleaner but a block of resin quite expensive even today so you would use it all up and thats why they are empty when you find them. I've been watching you for years Si and was enjoying this episode when my jaw hit the floor! I couldn't believe it when you found that drinking cup from Arrowhead Hot Springs, all the way over here in San Bernardino, California!! The Arrowhead cut into the hillside, I can see from my backyard! What are the odds of that?! The famous old hotel is still there and has gone through many hands. It was a religious retreat not too many years ago, then it was sold to the city with no definite plans but there is always the hope of reopening it once again as a resort. All the most famous movie stars ( it was a favorite of Humphrey Bogart's) used to go there to lounge by the pool and get away from the studio for a couple of days. Lots of interesting history there. Well it really IS a small world!

The hotel crockery might have been nicked but it’s also possible that when the hotel updated they sold off the old, unwanted dishes, etc. Many hotels did this (still do). I lived in a huge Victorian house that had been turned into a rooming house. The lady who owned it used to go to hotel sales and auctions for both kitchen-ware and furniture. We had a number of mismatched plates and bowls with logos as well as pots and pans that she had bought to put in the kitchen. In my room, I had this huge ornately-carved walnut Victorian sideboard which I have no idea how they got into the room, as well as a matching 1920s maple desk and dresser. They had all been bought from a sale of furnishings from the Canadian National Railway-owned Chateau Laurier Hotel here in Ottawa when they modernized the rooms. The Chateau is still a fixture here. I really wanted to take that sideboard with me when I left after 6 years but short of renting a crane and removing the windows, it wasn’t going to happen. The CN/CP (CP= Canadian Pacific Railways) hotels exist all over Canada, near the original old stations. Fact. One of our Prime Ministers, William Lyon MacKenzie-King, would spot an item on a train or in the hotel and telegraph the head of CP rail and ask if he could have as many as a dozen railway lamps or an entire suite of bedroom furniture matching one he spotted in a hotel (including a set that matched the desk and dresser I had). The head of CP would dutifully send him what he asked for… for free… He did the same when, in WWII, when Buckingham Palace was bombed. He sent a telegram to the Canadian attaché the same night and asked (strongly hinted) that if there might be some damaged stonework from the Palace it could be salvaged and sent to him. A week ir so later several very large pieces were “secretly” stowed aboard Canadian submarine and sent to him (remember… at the height of WWII… in a military submarine… across the Atlantic to Mackenzie-King. He added the stones to the folly he was building on his private estate. I can just imaging the attaché having to call Buckingham Palace to ask for the pieces of stone for the Canadian PM.

hello fellow-Ottawa person . i never knew this about Mackenzie King - and i know he has a reputation for being a bit strange !
@Mudhooks2 жыл бұрын
@@clockwork9827 He was notorious for asking for (or “pointedly hinting about”) free stuff. The “attaché”, BTW, was Lester B. Pearson…. Can you imagine if it got out in wartime that the PM ordered a submarine to bring back a load of limestone blocks for WLM-K’s garden folly at Kingsmere? Pearson’s memo about it finally came out, after M-K’s death.

This mudlarking looks like it would be so much fun to do! Not much history here in my area (NS Canada), so you are very fortunate for all this uncovered history! I Love it!
