Hi Si! The anchor is a great find. The forged ring attached to it is an indicator of it's age as that type of ring means the anchor was most likely intended to have hemp rode rather than chain. The shackle that connects the ring to the chain as you found it appears to be a relatively modern adaptation. In my experience these subtleties in anchor design and construction have been used in underwater archaeology to help date and identify wrecks that are associated with particular anchors.

Your little pink stone at the beginning could certainly be a ruby as far as the colour goes, as rubies come in all sorts of shades, from deep burgundy through to bright pink!! However the facets look a little worn, which makes me think it might not be a ruby, as rubies (and sapphires) are very hard and are often used as abrasives for other stones (they are called corundum in that context), whereas that stone looks like it might be too soft. Other stones that can be pink like that include garnets (which also come in green), spinel, tourmaline, and more rarely, fluorite.

Thank you Si for your entertaining and informative videos. I am constantly screen shooting finds, details and sometimes your repurposing ideas. I live in the middle of Canada and have spent a lifetime here doing pretty much the same things with what we have to find here. But if I was there I would be mudlarking at every opportunity. As it is, six months of the year our ground is buried under snow and frozen to the depth of six foot. Now I am semi retired I have started working on cleaning up my finds and working on how best to display them in our home. A lot of my pieces I have gathered all the info I could on them as they are destined to go to museums upon my passing.I am going to try some new mudlarking ideas here this summer that I have learned on your U Tube channel. Anyways about ten years ago I purchased online three largish boxes of mudlarking finds that was from the estate of a mudlarker that had collected all their life, who they were I have no idea, but the seller claimed all the finds was from the Thames. When I received it, all the silver that likely was in there was picked over, but what I really was after was there. Just odds and ends or bits and bobs if you prefer. This winter I started to finish cleaning what was there and what I found under the final dirt coating is amazing. It has given me days of fun researching. Every time I go through the boxes something new catches my eye. And as I am learning so much on your channel I know more about what I’m looking at. It sure is one thing to have a whole item in your hand and quite another the figure out what a bit of something is. A word to all the mudlarker’s out there, never discard anything you pick until you thoroughly clean them and follow up on any numbers or letters or shapes that become visible. It is easier to throw them out at home rather than go back to look for them when you realize what you left behind. Anyhow I will close with letting you know one piece in my pile was a flattened out and caked with dried mud Viking Chape. There were many more other things especially ten hammered coins that were utterly invisible except for shape, under a coating of black smooth clay. Today I was looking at what appeared to be a three hole button but I spotted four sections that had three letters each. It was a clipped silver half crown from around 1672, of course the silver was black which explains how it was missed by the estate family. Anyways this is a good lesson for those of you that have the privilege to mudlark on the Thames. Make that privilege count.

You gents are always finding such amazing treasures wherever you search. Here's a suggestion for you... All those copper nails along the foreshore are there for you to collect. With the price of copper today, you could stroll the shore with a backpack and pick up a fortune in copper nails, or treasures for the museum. Not sure of the laws there, but a maritime museum or collector might be thrilled to have them. Could be a great day on eBay as well. Good to see you again. Great luck in the muck!

I got jealous of cuffs. I wish I could have been him spending my time on the foreshore with someone so superior in knowledge like you. Good luck in all further endeavors.
