I can't believe some of the criticism of Gary Lam. He one of the top 3 wing Chun instructors in the US if not the world. His Wing Chun is incredible. If you live near Los Angeles, go to his school and take a class. He teaches personally to most new students. I think you will change your mind in about 5 minutes.

For a beginner, They want people to play chi sau soft so that the WC guy will learn how to redirect the force instead of fighting it. Gary Lam has the best wing chun!!!!!! Can someone please tell me how the wing chun system defends against street attacks since most street aggressors will throw a hook or overhand punch. Obviously, the aim would be to intercept the swing with a more direct centreline punch, but what I'm asking for is how they block or deflect the shot. Thanks

Not to shit on Gary's skills as they're obviously way up there, but he's annoyingly arrogant with his chi sao. At around 1:42 he lowers his left hand as if to say "look at me I only need 1 hand to break you" then Evangelos counter attacks and has to stop his punch right in front of Gary's face cause now his left hand is too late to the party to block it.

Blindside itself is a very controversial thing. In WC/WT style I currently practice there are lots of drills and actions on a blind side, but the thing is - it works rarely in fights with modern styles. In most fights I was in, I had to work mostly "inside" the man, and that is where european WT excels. No one really will let you go to blind side, aside from situations when your opponent is WAY slower then you, but in this situations - you don't need your WC to beat him at all.

There's something I don't understand here: why doesn't the student ever bring his guard up? I'm sure it's one of the first thing's we're taught, to get back to guard position if you feel as though you have any gaps. The student also seems quite senior but never pulls his hand out of the "traps" & into man/wu sau. Nor does he attempt to slip any of the laps. He seems to bring his trailing hand back way further than a WC student should, too. It's like he's helping his Sifu beat him or something.

Sifu Theo Katsigiannis is the best in Greece,at least. WC's style is more effective because you use the blindside,its 50-50, has more and better footwork,and just to know the great Bruce Lee learned a lot from Cheung and there are documents from Bruce's quotes about William Cheung... It all depends on the sifu of course. If Sifu Theo was at Lam's position and it was a real fight,i dont know if Evangelos would stand more than 10 seconds...

Well brother you have a point. But there is more to infighting squareup principle. There are angles, Bobing and weaving, Slipping and pivoting and the all important moving of the head. Hand and foot moving and arriving together is more powerful when whole body moves together as a unit. WT guys have problems with guys who can do this and not give up their arms. Master Lam is very strong, big, wise and experienced. His Kung Fu is Strong. I think I would learn alot crossing arms with him.

If u went to any good mma school or muay thai school and told them u have done wing chun, they will definatly not laugh in your face like these sort of people suggest.

Much of what you say is true but square on stances are used in many full contact arts and are an absolute must when in-fighting in any art.. Ving tsun is the at fault it is the people and teachers issues for not teaching it correctly--it is a connected controlling art--or encouraging expression and learning in free fighting...
@zacktillery12 жыл бұрын
Well played, yet unexperienced in grappling most likely. If you strike, you don't know how to defend against a take-down. You're also going under the assumption that EVERY SINGLE TIME you can knock me out with the first punch. A good boxer knows that the jab tears them apart, while setting you up for hooks etc. If you think that while I'm going in for the shot, and you jab, you'll knock me out, you're just unexperienced. But I respect your comment, and thank you for replying. :) Love and respect

@pkpk614350 : actually, that's not an accurate observation. I know many, many wing chun practitioners with 30-years' plus and they don't seem to be skillful. Time is not the only factor. One must also take into consideration of training method, intelligence and talent.
@zacktillery12 жыл бұрын
Grappling is a whole different classification. Think about it like this: You can have 10,000 different martial arts and they could all do well against each other. You can put ONE wrestler in with all of these people, and they'll all get beaten. Simply because they don't know how to grapple. A pure grappler vs a pure striker = a hurt strikers every time.
