@oltifromhungary if your stuck in a box and look at it from the limited perspective of the leung ting system yes you are right. fortunatly im aware of many more lineages outside of the leung Ting lineage so please get your mind around this motto "the mind is like a parachute it only works when its open" get out of that box

You are my favorite Sifu, sir. Your humility speaks volumes about your greatness; not to mention your masterful skill of the art. Your open-mindedness is a breath of fresh air in a martial arts world mired by petty differences.

Curious, what would be the principle behind the double tan sau as opposed to the arm-lock that you explain so well? Re-establishment and protection of center-line during the step, perhaps? Is that important in this section? After all, in any lineage, every movement should have a principle and application attached to it. (I personally learned older, arm-lock form.)

Do you think that the "sinking" aspect is more related to what one's defensive techniques should do to their incoming "bridge"? I'm of Ip Ching's lineage but I personally find value in Wong Shung Leung's Chum Kiu explanations and techniques as well as a few other of Ip Man's students. Seeing so many ideas really lets us know that Wing chun is a a conceptual art that leads to many applications and not technique based limited to certain interpretations of the forms, in my opinion. great post!!

This is a great video, the version I'm learning (3rd generation ip man lineage) is even more different than all the differences you showed. I really like how open minded you are and it's something to aspire to. great job!

@StringOfMusic Locks are meant to immobilize and take down an opponent without causing serious physical injuries. Of course you can always follow through with strikes, but the main aim is to immobilize an opponent so that he/she loses the capability to fight back until the he/she manage to escape from the lock.

Im not of his school, but I must say: his explanations are always very sophisticated and well formulated. He seems to have done,what he claims (meaning the research) His note on the open mind is i.m.O. the most remarkable! I could to be seen as critic on the various XY-wingchun styles, which seem to spread faster and faster (I mean the strong hierarchic schools, were the origin is never to be questioned) and otherwise I could be a call for peace between rivals, which should be friends...

Very interesting comparisons you share! I really like your open mindedness. I know this is a lot to ask, but do you possibly have any way of referencing your findings with a demonstration partner or other youtube video? Coming from my lineage, I find some pieces of the explanation confusing. =)

Sifu Sergio, as far as the Chum Kiu goes do you know if there is a site from which one can learn it? It would have to be done slow enough to pick the moves up and the proper way in how to perform the move, from that person's lineage of course.

The further you go in the system, you are encouraged to think and find weaknesses, and to give back to the system. Like Sifu Sergio said, all of the different ways are right, they are just a means to emphasize a certain concept while training the form. The way I see it, it only makes sense to train with the single concept of simplicity. Focus only on structure, the center line, the four fighting principles, and the four force principles.

good tips,but i got my own opinion,i believe we learn the form in a way with our own self expression and body scan with awareness.So what do you think with the opinion?
@MrTreacle55
@MrTreacle55 13 жыл бұрын
Very interesting discussion. My understanding has always been that the forms are not about techniques in the sense pretending you are fighting someone, but joint conditioning and body unity exercises. So actually it is irrelevant what 'technique' you are using. Other exercises concentrate on using your those conditioned joints for application. And the application may not look like the form except from the point of view of the body mechanics.

What you say makes sense, but I think the reasoning for of all the different forms is to establish a structured way to teach and learn the system. In the Siu Nim Tao, you learn the structure and the tools of the system - in essence, you learn the "alphabet." Next you add footwork and bridge seeking to make phrases with chum kiu in order to defend yourself. Next, Biu Gee teaches fluency to regain the center and break defenses by attacking. The dummy teaches recovery back into your structure.

Well in my lineage the uppercut of ChumKiu is not a punch, it's just and arm break and also included in the wooden dummy form. Anyway i believed that al the forms of the system can be reduced to 2 forms, the dummy form and SiuLinTao. I think that C.Kiu and biu gee borned like preeliminary excercises, and later become forms.You just need learn how to keep the structure of the SLT in the dummy form, and thats all. WC it's mostly SLT with angles an movents and the sensitivity tha came from chi sao.

Thanks Sergio, I'm always looking for something "new" in WC. I do see the sense in arm locking for 1 to 1 fight. For 1 to many, it is dangerous to even try. Your hands are occupied with the lock. And you only have your opponent out of the fight as long you hold the lock. A lock generally doesn't do much damage, unless you follow through, and again too much time and energy wasted. That's against basic Wing Chun principles, for that reason I'm not a true believer in locks. oops no parachute lol ;)

Sergio seems to think that it is possible to train different styles of ving tsun together. However, when you think about it and look really good to the different styles, you will see that they are different for a reason. The reason is that they have different interpretations about what is a good technique and what is not. The techniques differ, just as the concepts behind them. These techniques and concepts differ, contradict and can not be all true at the same time. Sergio is a relativist.
