@heeebeeegeeebeee4 жыл бұрын
For the record, the most common advice you’ll hear on the topic is, when you get a new gun, your first order of business (other than getting a holster) should be to run 500 rounds through it. You don’t have to do this all at once, but over the course of a few range trips. About 50 of them should be your carry ammo of choice. The thinking is that - if the gun’s going to have problems, they will probably become apparent within that 500 rounds (probably). Also, if you don’t mesh well with that gun for some reason, you will also discover that

Literally checked out this gun last week and almost walked out of the store with one. I waited (just bought a gun the week before that) and glad I did. I'm relatively new to firearms. I know how to handle them safely and everything but just don't know them like I know bikes or cars. Your point about testing all types of ammo hit home and makes perfect sense. I will be doing this from now on as common practice. First time watcher, now subbed! Thanks for the video!

I've had 2 p365s. First one hated carry ammo. I got rid of it, half a year later I wanted to try it again. Second one eats everything. And at 500 rounds (3 diff hollow points and several different brands of fmj) hasn't malfunctioned. Definitely test your carry gun with your carry ammo. Another point to make, take it to the range before you carry it. I picked up a p365 SAS (none compensated) about a month ago and after the 92nd round something in the triger mechanism broke/ failed. Nothing visibly wrong with it when fild striped. If you shake it while holding it sideways on eather side the trigger will occasionally catch and drop the striker. So now I can never trust it. I brought it back to my LGS and they sent it back to SIG. Now news yet about it.

Excellent point. If you receive a lemon, it will most likely make itself known within 250 rounds. But there’s no way to know until you test fire it. 👍 It’s especially important right now since manufacturers are struggling to keep up with demand. Quality control can miss problems when rushed. I hope it works out for you, it is always the worst when you end up with a lemon.

Awesome video !!! You made a very good point of which I think is true for many new gun owners. You go to the range and fire all the fmj range ammo, BUT fail to fire a couple of magazines of your hollow point carry ammo. It shoots and feels quite different than the range ammo, and as you stated yours had problems with every single round of hollow points ! Make sure the ammo you plan to carry will cycle through with no problems ... your life may very well depend on it. Sound advice. Test your carry ammo!!! I had a Ruger LCP II that I tested with ball ammo for the first 200 rounds. Cycled every one. Then I shot a box of Sig .380 hollow points - they had a squared off tip....jammed (failed to feed) every single time. Every single one. Then i tried Hornady Critical Defense and it loved eating those! Just to be safe I bought 100 rounds (expensive I knkow) and cycled them through. I did rapid to single round shots. awaiting the approval of my permit here in NY, and have my sights set on getting a P365 or the 365 XL. of the dozens and dozens of videos I have watched this truly has been one of my favs for a few reasons. 1) I normally watch videos at either 1.25 or 1.5 playback speed because they just seem to talk so slow or repeat the same info before moving onto the next point 2) your straight to the point attitude and demeanor was welcoming with a lighter side to it. 3) no BS - not making excuses to favor your bias. Kudos. only gun channel I have subbed to, keep up the good work. maybe you can do a comparison with the 365/365xl in the future. I have heard that the OG 365 has pretty much been completely ironed out, too bad can't say the same for the XL thus far.

Just fired my 365 for the first time: I found the flush 10-round mag would not load with the slide closed when full, and hard to load it in, too. So it is really a 9 round mag, for now anyway. Cant trust it with 10. The mag with the extra grip piece was fine. The slide would not lock open at all when the mag was emptied. I do believe this was because my grip slightly depresses the slide release when firing. Well documented issue. Need to alter the grip next time at the range. It did fire flawlessly, no jams, FTF or other malfunctions with target ammo.I will take you suggestion and fire some HST thru it. Will be very disappointed if it jams at all. Been thru that nightmare several times before with S&W and H&K VP9. FYI, I don't care about the rail on the P365 .. I have absolutely no intentions of ever mounting anything on it. I don't want anything on it! .. I use it for just 1 purpose .. concealed carry .. period! Also, you should be able to test the HP feed without having to fire the gun. You "should" be able to manually rack through a magazine of HP's to see if you have the problem or not.
@NightwoodGuns3 жыл бұрын
The rail is by no means a deal breaker. But, some people choose to conceal a gun with a weapon light on it. I personally carry an offhand light. And this P365 manually cycled hollow points perfectly. You can’t simulate the slide velocity of live fire manually. I’ve also had guns that will hang up on hollow points while manually cycling, but they functioned flawlessly during live fire. Hard to say 🤷♂️
@squidly21123 жыл бұрын
@@NightwoodGuns - Interesting, I guess you have to just test it on the range to be sure. I have fired a couple of different types of HP's on the range, not many as they are too expensive to be plinking with. So far everything has worked well, I hope it continues. I will have to try testing a few different HP's and check to be sure the ones I carry will operate properly. This is probably something everyone should do anyway, just to be sure. The real reason to test your exact ammo is to ensure that it functions reliably. @NightwoodGuns4 жыл бұрын
Yep, I made this video before the ammo shortage. It isn’t ideal, but you can test defensive ammo by staggering rounds. In the mag: first 2 defensive rounds, a few target rounds, 2 more defensive rounds in the middle, more target rounds, and then the last 2 defensive rounds. The important thing is to have the mag fully loaded so you get the full spring pressure on the rounds. But, this way you are only using 6 defensive rounds. And make sure you test it with every magazine you plan on using for defense. If possible, testing with a full mag of defensive rounds is still preferred.

This is a QC issue that could happen to any manufacturer that lets lemons slip through. At a minimum it is wise to shoot one mag of your carry ammo through your carry gun. It isn’t necessarily a P365 exclusive issue.

@Nightwood Guns - The P365 is *finally* good to go, took Sig almost 2 years. Problem is that the Hellcat is now the highest capacity micro pistol in the smallest package in the world. I've shot many P365 with thousands of rounds combined with all of them and had more than my share of issues with the P365. I've shot thousands through the Hellcat and other micros as well with no problems. From my experience, the Hellcat is superior in almost everything. Sights, ergos, muzzle control, capacity, most importantly *reliability* , low-high quality ammo consumption, trigger. The only thing I didn't like the Hellcat over the P365 was the slide serrations which are not very good on the Hellcat. The P365 use to be the best EDC micro, but not anymore. The Hellcat is the same size with more capacity and better mechanics and has already proven to shoot 10K rounds without the pistol malfunctioning, the P365 has yet to hit 1K without a single hiccup. I was planning on buying the P365 at the end of this year after Sig finally got the bugs fixed, but after testing both side by side many times, the Hellcat has now jumped to the top spot on my wish list.

Another thing I like to do. Run that defense ammo at the end of your range time, after the gun has had a bunch of rounds through it and is relatively dirty as opposed to just cleaned and oiled. Self defense situations don't check to see if your gun's clean. And if possible run it rapid fire as fast as you safely can, cause chances are when the stress and fear are happening that's how you will do it for real.

@@NightwoodGuns I agree, I am simply pointing out that unless there is something actually wrong with the firearm , the vast majority of the time, its the shooter and not the gun. What sane person who has a concealed carry gun DOESN'T run some self defense ammo through it before carrying it? Just got my Sig P365 XL and a 15 rd mag on Thur, cleaned the gun and all 3 mags (had to change the floor plate on the 15 rd mag anyway as it comes set up for the P365), and ran 234 rounds of Federal 124 gr Syntech through it (all 3 mags 6 times each) and all 3 mags (39 rounds) with Federal 124gr JHP. I'll do that again before this gun goes in rotation as my carry gun (Kahr PM9 is my pocket pistol, Kahr K9 my other carry gun), but with the capacity of the XL, especially with the 15 rd mag, it will probably be my primary carry gun. My advice is to run no less than about 500 rounds through any gun before depending on it to possibly save your life, or the lives of others, and the difference between a 32.5 cent round and an 80 cent one is not significant enough to not make some of those rounds what you intend to carry.
@NightwoodGuns4 жыл бұрын
You are right on the money! But it just doesn’t occur to some people (especially newer shooters) to run defensive ammo through their guns. They just assume it will work simply because they don’t know any better.

What's the difference in using target 115 or 125 grain ammo for self defense and hollow points? I mean I know hollow tips are going to mess somebody up worse, but wouldn't regular shots work too?
@NightwoodGuns4 жыл бұрын
The weight of the bullet affects the velocity/trajectory of the bullet, the depth of penetration (and in the case of hollow points: the size of expansion.) Hollow points are much preferred for self defense since they typically do not over penetrate. When they expand, they dump the vast majority of their energy into the target. This obviously causes more damage, but it also slows the bullet down. Target ammo (full metal jacket) does not expand, so it does not slow down as much (unless it hits a bone dead-on.) The chance of over penetration is much higher. Your bullet could go through the bad guy and hit an innocent person behind them. This is why every responsible and educated person carries hollow points. I hope that was helpful. Check out Lucky Gunner’s ballistic gel tests to see how different defensive loads compare concerning depth of penetration and expansion.

Sig has now got this issue fixed. However if you do have an older one and are watching this vid saying oh no just shoot target ammo thru it for a piece of mind. Both are great options. I like the LTT Beretta and the Wilson Combat Beretta. And, of course, I love Staccatos. Learning the double action first shot on the Beretta and committing the manipulation of the safety on the Staccato to muscle memory are the only challenges of adopting those firearms in a defensive role over striker guns like the P365.
