fields is something groundbreaking, like mograph in 11.5 or smth, great presentation which is showing a lot of scenarios where fields could be applied

Is it possible to use a volume builder + mesher and have the different child objects use different textures? For example if you have a cube with spheres cloned to it then put this into a volume builder/mesher that you could somehow use the vertex maps to color the spheres?

It is if you make the mesher editable. You can't use vertex maps on generators unless you use a workaround such as correction deformer or a python expression.
