Dan and Sifa, Facts: Vince Colaiutas farewell album concert.18 month tenure, but only 12 months touring. Shortest drummer tenure ever for frank, aside from Logeman.. Why? Laundry list is available! This album was a flop in sales, according to Frank. Frank, desperate to compensate for bad sales, after the Bozzio top of the world successful era, mass produced the shut up and play your guitar series. Slapped it together, fast, on select solos from mid 75- early 79, and released it fast, to make up for poor Colaiuta era sales occurring at the time. Colaiuta bootlickers should notice the absence of his reverbed drum kit sound, as used and over killed in Joe's garage, fabricating the true sound of his kit, A simple jazz type kit. Casuals have no conception. This album exposes the true sound of Coaliutas crappy kit, only making it worse on most other songs, overkill drumming, using his pretentious over use of polyrhythms and odd phrases, to make a slop of the already too chaotic frank compositions.

Frank was talking about how Rock has declined into a Business controlled by "Suits" instead of Artists, and how the AM radio consumers didn't care that talent had been depreciated because music videos became the selling point ("Afficionados come to look but not to hear")

Many of the die hard zappa fans that I know here in europe stoped listening to him around 1980/81. They missed the prog/fusion style of his former albums and the long exalted guitar solos. I think that there are a lot of brilliant things to discover on this 1980 albums on and I belive there is some great art on some of this albums. Maybe it's a bit to much comedy focused sometimes and we non english native speakers didn't get what he want to tell us here at once, but there is no zappa album ever recorded in vain for sure. And: God save the QUEEN (and definitely not her fa... regime) R.I.P.!

Frank lived in L.A. because that's where all of his resources were. Everything he needed to create his art was there. He said he would have much preferred living in New York but the real estate was too expensive.

Frank HATED L.A. BUT... he said that it was the only place where he could get his studio fixed in two seconds if there was a problem. If it wasn't for that, he would have lived in New York. About Jim Morrison.. I'm writing an 8 part mini-series screenplay about Pauline Butcher. (Frank Zappa's seceretary) And there is a scene where Pauline and one of the other girls from Zappa's entourage (I forget who, but I THINK it was Pamela Des Barres) help Jim Morrison out of the Whiskey a go-go after he's had WAYYYY too much to drink...or... whatever. If my screenplay ever gets picked up... it will be an iconic scene (one scene, in the third episode) ... that will give new appreciation to this line from this song.

Re the being a star in New York quip. When Bowie was shooting the video for Ashes to Ashes (he was in a jester’s outfit, you may recall), a local guy inadvertently walked onto the set. And when one of the assistants asked him: “Do you know who that is?” The guy replied: “Yeah, some c#*t in a clown suit.” Bowie was duly informed, and apparently pissed himself laughing. Not literally, of course.

At the end you get a clear statement by Frank. The diissonant chord on the "wood" part of Hollywood, and after that the beautiful rendition of a Hollywood pastiche (or even parody) which he was always good at: "Semi-fraudulent Direct From Hollywood overture" from 200 Motels or Bogus Pomp.

I moved from the east coast and live in LA because for six years, I was thoroughly enmeshed in the "biz." Hollywood and all it's associated with is a very dark, nasty, seedy place. It infects many and few survive. Frank knew this and often took shots at the underside of the entertainment biz. I met Frank and have even been to his 8,000 sq foot compound in Laural Canyon. He was very personable and real, unlike many of the plastics in Tinsel Town.

Back in the late 70's I used to love putting on some ugly clothes + going to punk shows at all the Hollywood clubs this song mentions; and I LOVED this whole album. There's nothing more punk than calling out the punks for their pretensions. This album was WE'RE ONLY IN IT FOR THE MONEY for a new generation. The full-blown Hollywood fanfare ending lifted straight from the I LOVE LUCY show theme song was especially brilliant, suggesting that the era's hip new sound was just as lame + cheesy as any middlebrow mainstream American teevee show.
