Phish in the early days did do a crap ton of Dead covers. Like ‘88-‘89 early days by the ‘90’s they swore off dead tunes to not be a Dead cover band. My first show was ‘93 saw Trey on tour ‘99-2001. Next check out Vultures a bit more melodic and vocal.

Ha! I was wondering when the Phish fans would mosey on over to SAF My first show was new year's eve at MSG 1998 and it was a pivotal moment in my development as a musician. These guys opened up lots of doors for me: Zappa, jazz, fusion, classical...glad you guys dug it

Good observation about the similarities/differences between Phish and the Dead. The Dead and the Allman Brothers were like the Godfather’s to the jam band scene, but the bands that followed in their wake all put their own distinctive spin on the experience (at least the bands that have had staying power, like Phish).

She called Slave a bathroom break song. Lol... I know she was just giving an example. Anyway Phish and the Dead are very different. There is a ton of variety in their music. Take Divided Sky and Ghost as examples. Two great songs that are totally different.

Great to see you checking out Phish. This was of their earlier jam tunes, sort of a swirling buildup to a climactic solo. Some of the later jams are more like journeys into uncharted territory. A great example: "Carini"

Saw my last Grateful Dead show and my last Phish show, didn't know it at the time of course, one day apart, June 24/25 1995. Saturday in Washington, D.C. for Jerry and the Boys, and Sunday in Philadelphia with Phish. Nice weekend. I was a Slave To The Traffic Light the whole time. Both bands are, were, similar, but very different. The Dead were more free form with their jams, whereas Phish means every note they play, much more structured jams.

Absolutely not. The deep Phish jams went way deeper than the dead ever did. Their songs are a lot more technical than the dead's but once the jam starts anything goes. Of course there are exceptions- hood jams generally, slave, fluffhead, etc. Generally follow a template, but for the most part they were just as, if not more exploratory as the dead.

My favourite Phish song- the peak is just so emotional and this is a great version, the first one I ever heard. Not sure why your description says Harry Nilsson though! "Slave to the Traffic Light", to me, is a simply statement about how most people in modern society exist- rushing to work, at the whim of clocks and city life; "see the city, see the zoo". And the jammy peak of the last half of the song is finding beauty and release.

Didn't mind this at all. Pleasant on the ear but at the same time very familiar sounding. Beefed up mid '70's arena rock, very Joe Walsh. As i said, quite like this but wouldn't buy this stuff. I prefer bands that have a little originality, less predictable. Decent musicians all the same.

Maybe you should listen to a little more Phish before you dismiss them as “predictable”? They are all over the place, and yet with a distinctive sound. Not a favorite band of mine, but I’ve got nothing but respect : )

They'll grow on ya. They are coming from a psychedelic background, active participants lol. I saw them at IU in 94 I think at the Auditorium, they just had a semi hit, Bouncing Around the Room and it was sold-out with a sizeable crowd outside who were treated to an acoustic set beside the bus in the lot. The show inside was nuts but what fun. Trampolines, Electrolux vacuum cleaner mic'd up sucking on Fishman's gut. Seemed like an experiment 🤔 with professors observing. I never went back, I had bigger fish to fry securing Grateful Dead tickets but I did enjoy the Bloomington Test and have watched many of their shows via live stream.

How presumptuous of you to think I haven't heard much Phish in which to make an opinion. Arrogance personified. Looking at your description it would appear that it's you who maybe needs to listen to more varying types of music if that is indeed what you think. I haven't listened to every thing they've done but would say it's in double digits what i have. Doesn't matter to me how "all over the place" someone might be if that place is simply retracing someone else's path. Every single piece i have listened to, whilst agreeing they are decent musicians, it's like "this bit is so and so band, this bit is another band. Reminds me of "Family Guy", plagiarism into plagiarism throughout each song. In future, maybe ask a person what they have heard before trying to come over as some "big shot know it all" and trying to belittle people. This is for Jazzman by the way.

What other stuff of Phish have you checked out, just curious. (Full Disclosure, I am also taken back by the statement of "prefer bands that have a little originality, less predictable" only because the way it usually goes with people who don't dig Phish is that they find them a little too original and way too unpredictable, lol. Precisely backwards). At any rate, I'd love to send you some stuff without being an asshole about it. Cheers.

@@juhawks37 Think you were directing your comment at me. As for them too original, I think you're deluded...without being an asshole about it. They're "decent" musicians. I don't need to disclose anything to anyone enough to say i've listened to more than 10 tracks, every single one is filled with aping other bands sounds and stringing it together, If you can't hear this i suggest it's your musical catalogue that needs broadening . Please keep your amateur and unqualified analysis to people you can intimidate, lol, again without being an asshole. Cheers.
