Good question. If you are able to sight before breathing to either side, great! When I sight/breathe to both sides, I see a lot more of my surrounding area than when I only sight/breathe to the right. You may find that sighting/breathing to your dominant side is easier than to the non-dominant side, but with practice it will be easier. By swimming straight, I mean swimming a straight line from point A to point B. Many people veer, swim in circles, and swim twice the distance they meant to.

Thanks, Vic - yes, the sighting motion should happen QUICKLY. It's just a quick look up. Then the head comes right back down, or to the side for a breath.

Very good video! Just a silly question about sighting. I usually sight with my breath and I usually breathe in on my fourth stroke. So do you have any tips on alternating sighting to your left vs. right? Also, although toy want to swim straight, should you generally swim parallel to the shoreline (especially in more natural and lake settings)?

Inhaling a stroke before sighting works fine. You need to exhale as you sight.

Some googles are adjusting itself to the light. From my experience they are better than the mirrors googles. .Especially when the light changes during the swim

[Sweep the eyes,] not head. Helps, get comfy quickly. For my SHT(learn), of breast stroke - they hav me, dive down - then ease up! Like a snorkeler. Feet - follow down - nearly 90deg.

Good to hear from and see an experienced coach demonstrating. Unfortunately the advice is devalued by the line Leslie took towards the boat. She was probably unaware at the time but she went way off to the right. It's a pity the camera crew didn't get on to the line at the start and stay put but you can still tell she went right by the angle of her final approach. I think if she had know she would have done it again. The key to open water swimming is learning to swim straight. The solution ISN'T sighting. WHY? Because the more often you sight the more micro-corrections you make. It may give the appearance of swimming a straighter line but in reality if you're not swimming straight your 'line' will be like a saw-tooth pattern. The more you sight the more teeth on the saw. But in percentage terms the deviation from a straight line is the same. I accept that my theory doesn't work when taken to the extreme but you get the idea. So I liked Leslie's intro to the clip emphasizing the importance of straight arm entry. But what about bi-lateral breathing to keep the stroke more balanced; and what about drills in the pool to improve awareness of your imbalance - swimming say 400m with half of each length eyes closed (you'd better have the lane to yourself though!).

Clive Weston So are you saying that you can hold a straight line with currents hitting you from one side without sighting? I can't imagine that.
