Yoga means yoke, join. I didn't hear him address linking breath to his bizarre movements once.

@@fclss no, what I missed was him teaching people WHEN to inhale and exhale which, as a teacher of yoga for almost 20 years I can assure you is crucial. Apparently you missed that part of a teacher's responsibility.

@@madeleinegrayson8372 the whole point of this method is to not think about the breath. The sequence is designed in such a way that the patterns of lengthening and contracting are encouraging smooth, slow and soft breathing. So the breathing cues are not necessary here, they are embedded in the flow. .

@@fclss that's not something beginners can understand. It's the question I am asked most often by beginning students. They don't yet have a connection to breathing and movement to do it intuitively. Leaving it up to someone inexperienced is just bad teaching. Without teaching proper breathing the practice can create tension rather than release it.

@@madeleinegrayson8372 thanks for your comment. Since this is me teaching in this video I thought I would take some time to respond to you now. You probably know this already (but most people don’t know this), but your psoas muscle is connected to your diaphragm in a way that if some one is relaxed and gently extends and flexes the hips as I am doing in this practice then hip extension will make a very gentle inhalation while hip flexion makes a very gentle exhalation. By following this practice you regulate your breath without over-breathing. This creates measurable changes in and improves heart rate variability in a manner that enhances immune, reproductive (regenerative) and digestive health and well-being. This is a big story but most normal people will hyperventilate if you instruct breathing in any way. It takes a quite adept practitioner to focus consciously on breathing and not over-breathe or over-tense in a way that stimulates a dominance of the sympathetic nervous system. Most people don’t appreciate that if you breathe more than one full breath per minute then this is essentially the opposite of pranayama and will essentially reduce blood flow to your brain, hypersensitive your nervous system and reduce the flow of oxygen into your cells (via the Bohr effect). I teach Pranayama to my experience students, but until they can do less than one breath a minutes there are only a few benefits that you can gain from breathing beyond gross musculoskeletal ones. In my personal practice, I regularly breathe one breath every two minutes for about one hour. It is not the breathing that is the link between Body & Mind as many people think. Rather, it is the diaphragm which has dual control between conscious and unconscious nervous systems. However, this muscle is not unique in this ability. Other places in your body, such as your pelvic floor, your tongue, your throat and your eyes also have dual control between conscious and unconscious nervous systems. Hence a good understanding of yoga involves knowledge of mula bandha in your perineum, Ashwini Mudra around the anal sphincter and vajroli Mudra (for men) and sahajroli Mudra (for women) at the front of your pelvic floor. Additionally, a good understanding of hatha yoga involves the understanding of khechari Mudra with your tongue drishti with your eyes. These all serve as bridges between conscious and unconscious carrying as much potency in terms of creating connections in your body as your diaphragm does. If, however, the diaphragm is inhibited during a practice of posture and movement (or in daily life) as it is in most modern people due to inappropriate abdominal or pelvic floor tension or excessive stressful chest breathing then the yoga becomes simply exercise and not really yoga . In this practice I am creating enhanced connections in my body by improving blood circulation while keeping the heart rate very low. You can show this easily with an infrared video camera. I’ve done this research at RMIT University in Melbourne Australia. I am very lucky to have learnt a lot of yoga for years with BKS Iyengar, and studied Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga in Mysore from the 1980s onwards. What I’m teaching. Here is the sun combination of 40 years of yoga teaching experience, and 55 years of personal practice, and 25 years as a physiotherapist research scientist. If you were interested, I’m happy to explain more if you care to write to me.
